The object in S1 with Robotnik's face is indeed just a solid collision object. In S2, it is usually represented by Tail's life icon. The reason it is in walls is to ensure you don't get pushed into that wall. The ground and wall collision isn't perfect and you can get pushed into walls by platforms and other objects. Another object (not the terrain) makes collision work as intended and kill you rather than pushing you into the wall. Usually, you will see these around moving platforms. Other solid objects could be used, but the object ID for the invisible solid object has subtypes for different lengths and widths you can set.

9:32 weird robotnik blocks are invisible solid blocks. They are used to prevent entering the walls as well as killing the player by being crushed between two objects.

I actually remember seeing the prototype title screen in the manual as a kid and wondering why it was different It's good to finally have that cleared up 13 years later XD As well as the hidden palace song on the sound test and a strange unused island sounding theme

About the enemies and such loading other graphics at the end of a level: It’s VRAM management. The Genesis only has so much space to store sprites, so since there won’t be any enemies at the end of a level, they swap those graphics out with the Robotnik graphics and such.

Dust hill zone was the original name for mystic cave zone, the zone in the promotional art is sand shower zone as mystic caves level slot is after oil ocean and dust hill is after oil ocean in the time travel concept art

My theory for the Dr. Robotnik squares was that they're a call to a routine to do something not doable with a regular object. They're always next to something that needs to be animated or is a special gimmick. Either that or they are instant-kill squares for when there is a chance Sonic can get squished.

I believe they're just "hard block" objects used to make sure sonic gets crushed by an object instead of phasing through the wall/floor

@@radiocaster2k From my own testing, that's exactly what they are. Any "crush" terrain always has Robotnik squares on it, and the one time I finagled Sonic into a wall without them using level geometry, he was pushed through.

Fun fact: Russian version of all sonic 2 were betas with only 3 zones(1st and 3rd are green hill, 1st is unfinished). Other zones are accessible with secret menu and yet also unfinished. After casino zone there’s no level

I remember back in 2010 (it was my exposure to Genesis Games at the time) figuring out all about Debug Mode and toying around, it makes me think if I'm missing half of the stages because there are unused items. And Soundtrack 10 in Sonic 2 has been my biggest wonders. Reading about TCRF years later, reading about Prototypes, it just feels so good that to this day everything is being pieced together. Still looking forward to that day to see the very first build with "You are Welcome".

@@arciks11 on top of that, Sega actually did not expect sonic to be as big as he would be. I heard that from an interview, but I can't remember who it was with. But for that reason they did not take care to remember where they put it. It was also said that it's likely still in Sega's archives somewhere but they're so huge it's lost

In the 2013 Sonic 2 port, you can access “Proto Palace Zone”, which is the original level from the Nick Arcade prototype. Track 10 music and everything. Though strangely enough, restarting sends you to Hidden Palace.

So another fun fact for the teleporter monitor in Sonic 2 Genesis is that you can also give Tails your invincibility if you hit the monitor as Super Sonic. Tails will have the invincibility sparkles, and while you'll still look like Super Sonic the moment you touch an enemy you lose your rings and turn back to regular Sonic until you get another 50 rings or hit the S monitor again.

Fun fact: in the hidden palace non-loop original music ending you can actually hear a snippet of how it was with 2 player mystic cave and hidden palace I can't find how the music notes were played. But you can here the little ending loop before the mystic cave 2 player music changes

I once discovered the goggles monitor in Sonic Origins when I was playing around with the Debug Mode in Sonic 1. They were only available for Labyrinth Zone as far as I remember. Maybe it was in Scrap Brain Act 3 also?

Nick arcade and Simon wai aren’t the only two “sonic 1 builds” if you will. There’s a third called “alpha”. There’s also “pre-beta” and “censor” but they’re not sonic 1 anymore.

from what I understand, time travel in sonic 2 was going to be plot-driven, just like in sonic mania you go from zone to zone with the power of the script

will say that in the sonic 1 prototype video the music for the final theme and beta theme are switch.. the one with the extra clear sounding drums that standout compared to the rest is the prototype and the layout designs were also swaped.. how that got into the final video I dont know

10:48 As a certified Sonic fan, my speculation is that the Eggman Blocks are extra protection for clipping out of the level, because from what I saw. You find them mostly next to moving objects.

i hope there are a sonic 2 beta build where genocide city zone is playable, in a sense that there are no major glitching effect or something like that
