The "discovery" was absolutely hilarious. I noticed that in the slow mo the first times around. I think it's because the ink used very slightly weakens the rubber material.
@Aenonar
@Aenonar Жыл бұрын
The injection mold for creating the skin would have a sharp angle where the crotch is, which would make less rubber collect at that point vs cavities like the hands and feet which would collect more rubber. Hence why the hands and feet barely inflate at all and the crotch area is the weakest.
@aserta
@aserta Жыл бұрын
Nah. It has to be something to do with the formation of the item itself. My money is that that's where the injection is for the mold's lower part.

That's a brilliant insight, it definitely explains why this was more than a coincidence. Makes me wonder, what if they got their hands on a stretch that hadn't been filled up, would he have blown up even bigger? Though I'm guessing based on how strong the material is (I honestly didn't expect it to be that strong), probably the new weakest point would be where they cut it for the hose? (Not 100% sure since it kinda boils down to how the zip ties mitigate that, or other stuff like that...)

When I was a kid, I had a Stretch Armstrong. My younger brother and I wanted to see how far we could stretch the guy. At the top of the stairs was a landing that overlooked the stairs. My brother sat on the landing and held Armstrong’s hands while I want to the bottom of the stairs and grabbed his feet. Just as I started to swing, Armstrong ruptured on his side, from his elbow to his hip. That slimy sticky goo went everywhere: in my hair, on my face, and into the carpet on the stairs. It was a disgusting mess and great fun.

I actually did have a stretch armstrong as a kid (He did not look like the one you have now, he was 15" tall and had a black shirt on.) And I actually pulled and stretched it so much that it ripped open a little bit and that's how I found out they had that thick, sticky, syrupy stuff inside to give it that unique tactile feeling it had. It was an extremely satisfying toy to play with. One of the all time greats.

If you're curious why it keeps breaking at the crotch, there's one major factor at play, the connection point between the legs, the arms connect to the larger body individually but the legs connect to a single point together, even when you just pull one leg or the other, strain is put on that one point regardless causing more wear to that space, combine that with the fact it becomes the point of the highest resistance thanks to bending externally during inflation compared to it's natural concave design, both factors together equal repeated crotch devastation

That hole must be where they inject the guts. The needle leaves such a small hole that it only opens a little bit and starts urinating when the rubber has stretched enough

Such a miniscule hole and such a viscous fluid would mean, that it would take ages or immnese pressure to fill, which doesn't make sense as it could be very easily filled from the head since it is not one piece. But I can imagine that the filling is some sort of polymer gel that is filled unpolymerized through the head then the head is fixed and then the polymerization is done inside the body so that the gel takes on that shape and "wants to stay that shape" and the tiny hole is where they injected, fittingly placed, the small amount of polymerization starter needed for that. That's at least my guess.

I think they must fill him from the head. That hole would be too small. But, I bet they have a small hole there to let air escape as they fill him from the head.
@MGSLurmey
@MGSLurmey Жыл бұрын
@@justfortheoption Apparently it's filled with a "proprietary gelled substance similar to corn syrup" so I doubt it uses polymerisation. It's likely just filled from the head, and perhaps the tiny pinhole is used to extract trapped air from the toy, or some other similar purpose? It could also be a defect as a result of how the latex rubber skin is manufactured.

When I was in college my friends had a stretch Armstrong that had a tiny hole in it. Stretch wasn't so stretch with hole in him. Rather than stretching parts of his arms and legs became hard. Because of that, we could break his arms or legs. Because that goo was goo still, it would "heal" and we could break his legs again and again and again. Strangely, it was very satisfying to do.

omg...watching this back in 4k and at 9:32, you can see towards the far right of the screen that there are super weak points in the fabric that look like holes. they're kinda all over the place, you can see some lighter spots. so it was like just waiting for a hole to breach that final layer of rubber. wild!!!

Back in the 70s I had his enemy, the Stretch Monster. I did actually cut it to see what was inside and saw that exact same glue stuff. I put it in the fridge and the glue went rock hard, but obviously it just warmed up and started leaking once we took him out.

you'd think it would be inserted through the neck before the head was put on, but your theory sounds the most logical
@W1gglePuppy

The diameter of the needle would have to be tiny to only show at maximum inflation. In turn you would need an extortionate amount of pressure to push a viscous fluid through said needle. More likely to do with the construction of the body itself.

@@LuvLikeTruck I was wondering if it's say the location of the input nozzle in the injection moulding process. Then I thought its probably blow moulded. Maybe there's just a slight defect in the mould, tiny bur or bump that creates a natural weak spot.

@@W1gglePuppy A tiny needle might be adequate to remove air/bubbles after inserting the filling via the neck hole, however....though I don't imagine air bubbles in there would even matter very much.
