All Summer Long, was really a Greatest Hits album unto itself. Solid record in every way.

Thank you so much for these brilliant series. Recently discovered it and have been catching up previous seasons. I`ve been a Beach Boys since 1987 when my dad taped me «Endless Summer». It wasn`t until a decade later i started buying their records after seeing «American Band» documentary and realizing their «secret» story. So many of their albums was not available on CD. Sunflower and Surf`s Up on vinyl was like hold grails. I remember missing out on them in my local record shop, so i bought «All Summer Long» instead. I was so blown away how creative and rich the production on this album was. It was a really sophisticated record with songs like the title cut, Girls On The Beach and Hushabye really blowing my mind. It might be my favourite BB album as it contains the old Beach Boys happy world and the masterful sounds to come.

"All Summer Long" is my favourite pre-1965 album, because I think it was their first complete body of work dedicated to summertime. Yes---you could make an argument that they made concept albums prior to that which were all either dedicated to automobiles or surfing, but by and large, they were still just a random collection of songs in no particular order, with some covers to fill the album. Whereas, All Summer Long is the first such record where every song belonged and mattered

As to Mike’s writing credits, that has more to do with Murry and Brian. Murry ran Sea of Tunes Publishing and he determined that the Wilson’s should make more money. In Brian’s case, when this was happening, he turned a blind eye instead of speaking up in Mike’s behalf. I believe this was all brought out in 1990’s lawsuit.

Brian, really showed them though, instead of continuing to get shorted on royalties, brian just gave the first few #1's he wrote away. at least he didnt get ripped off right?...🤔😬.. i bet murry was incensed, lol

Interesting, linking "All This Is That" to "Hushabye." I absolutely LOVE both, as well.

Surfer Girl is a great, great album, but imo this is the first entry into their pantheon, cream of the crop. All Summer Long, Today, Summer Days really just one sensationally long album for me and probably the BB records I listen to the most. All Summer Long great album cover too!

I enjoyed the analysis. Still can't believe the title song was not released as a single, its such a great song -- usually their title tracks are hit singles (at least their vocal ones - not Pet Sounds or Shut Down Vol 2).

You forgot to talk about this: I Get Around has Brian on Harpsichord! Also it's inspired by Sugar Shack.

Great stuff. Thanks so much! Being a Beach Boy fan in the late 60's was like being a surfer in NY City. The Lonely Sea. How can i support you?

I love Little Honda! If you just distort the guitar you end up with a Ramones tune! My 2 favorite bands combined :)

Carl's Big Chance also sounds like Boy From New York City. I wonder if he was thinking about that? I thought of that with the early take of Good Vibrations.

Boy, was it hard to find this episode, which I watched in full yesterday. I put in the show name, “All Summer Long,” and got a thousand references, none of which were correct. The breakthrough came using your name, Matthew. Anyway, my reason for writing was to inform you (you may already know this), that when I first bought the l.p. “All Summer Long,” the song “Don’t Back Down,” was listed as “Don’t Break Down.” Although they sang “ Don’t Back Down.” Was that original working title or a printer’s mistake? Maybe you know. I would imagine the original albums ( vinyl) are worth something.. This is off point, but focusing on your name reminds me of another Matthew, M. Mackenzie. Who died way too young. But he was the chief songwriter to my alltime favorite rite Boston band ( where I’m from), who at one time were on equal footing with Aerosmith in popularity and future potential. Unfortunately, due to managerial and record company f-ups, it never happened. But if you like short powerpop early Who type songs, you ought to check these guys out on You Tube. A lot of “woulda/coulda” been hits there. Anyway, thanks for all the good work you and Adam are doing on your channel. And congratulations to you for your gig with another all time classic American band, successor to Bob Wills.🎉

Oops, in my poor editing, I forgot to mention the name of that Boston Band: REDDY TEDDY. (Sorry)

thank you, Mark, for all of this! I think "Don't Break Down" was a printer's mistake. Thank you also for the kind words about Asleep at the Wheel :)

I always wonder who that "adult in the room" was (Hal Blaine?) who followed "... into a two-foot cup" with "No, into a damp rag."

It's Hal on a recording which was an unreleased song called Let's Live Before We Die. It didn't come out until 2014. The Booted Sessions are out there.

great channel guys.. its a nice pit stop for us BB/BW fans.. im having a hard time w the buffoonery @ capitol records in the '60's.. why on earth would any record company demand 3, guaranteed to sell, albums per/yr from one of their groups?.. is it not an obvious recipe to failure.. 3 LP's per year?.. kids in the 60's didnt have $$.. 3x per/yr only guaranteed that a percentage wouldnt get sold ?.. if they did have money to buy all, the short gaps between releases didnt give the public enough time to stop enjoying the LPs they just bought?.. if your still diggin an LP, your not motivated to buy another?.. did noone @ capitol have sense enough to avoid this recipe to fail??.. its embarrassingly foolish. 1-2 well-spaced apart releases per yr. wouldve prevented so many issues with revenue, chart positions, Brian, stress, etc. theres no doubt more of their recordings wouldve reached #1 if the market wasnt being flooded w potential hits... seems obvious to me dumbfuckery was in full swing.. couldve dropped pet sounds in '68 instead of e-'66.. smile most likely wouldve been completed. & on & on & on... agreed?
