I met Al backstage at a concert back in '86 and had a really nice talk with him, what a nice genuine fellow. My tidbits: - Al played double bass on the first 'Surfin' recording sessions - He encouraged the BBoys to wear striped shirts like his heroes the Kingston Trio. - He sang a lot of Brian's parts live especially after Bruce left. You can really hear these on the '74 live album Great guy!

Great program...as always! I bought the Wild Honey single and album just as soon as I knew they had come out. I was just 14 and still trying to figure out what happened to Smile and what Smiley Smile was all about. This album seemed to put everything right. I have always loved this album and especially the song Wild Honey. I love the simple instrumentation and especially the dueling electro-theremins on the outro. This album has always reminded me of Summer Days. After side two of the Today album, Summer Days seemed to go back to regular rock and roll for the Beach Boys. Wild Honey does the same after Pet Sounds and Smile. As as musician myself, I especially appreciate your analysis of the chord progressions on each song. You're very good. You show how the simplest of Brian's work can be quite complicated. Thanks again....looking forward to Friends. Lamont

Edit: For me, a Wonderful/Cabin Essence 'double A-side' single would've been>Strawberry Fields/Penny Lane double A-side... And I see Surf's Up>A Day In The Life... But that's just me. Edit: And I apologize for multiple comments, but you two did a really, really great deep-dive that I so appreciate! You taught me something new BTW, which I thought was damn-near impossible, & that was that Brian hadn't come up w/"a children's song..." til 1971, & I'd also wondered why he was only singing the "aaaaah, aaaaah, aaaah" bit on Leonard Bernstein, & also the demo he laid down w/nothing but a piano, which stands up aaaaaall by itself, man(!)... And imagine if he'd have been able to go & perform 'Surf's Up' @ something like Monterey Pop, or Woodstock, JUST BRIAN & a piano, ya know?! I think the sandbox tunes, & Matthew does the right thing to devote the most time to these, & the rumor was also that Surf's Up was once considered 'the centerpiece' to which they'd build the album around, too... But yet again... Whst a job well done, guys!👌🏼 Just woulda liked to've heard more abt 'Your Welcome," cuz I thought it was also originally meant to make SMiLE!'s final cut as the closing track... But I give this high marks, this dissection of the album. Absolutely... (‼️)

Loved your review on this record! This was always one of my fav's from the boys. Had this one since around 1970. I scratched the $#*% out of it from a 9 year old playing it constantly. Mine was the version that was marked "Stereo." There was nothing stereo about it. Bought the Brother/Reprise version around the mid 70's. The real treat came in the Sunshine Tomorrow package. Why they named it that is beyond me. They should have simply released it as Wild Honey Expanded Edition. Anyway, I'll take what I can get. One thing that sticks out like a sore thumb to me is the stereo mix of Darlin' which has a drop in audio 4 words into the song. Other than that, what a treat. Thanks for your time in putting these together. Great work!

Finally got to watch one in my bb room podcast the day it comes out, discovered your channel during a gap between shows and the gaps were so long that the smile & smiley smile shows caught me off guard, smiley a week late smile 3 weeks late. I'm in the middle of watching wild honey right now, so excuse if what I'm saying is something you mention later. But one thing the Beach Boys don't get credit for is that they were way ahead of the curve at the end of 1967. With wild honey, they were returning to a back to basics approach, something that didn't happen till 1968, when Dylan returned with John Wesley Harding, plus the Band with Music from Big Pink, The Beatles White Album, the Stones Beggars Banquet. All returning to a more organic jam based & traditional songs without the Psychedelic clutter. A movement which the Beach Boys initiated long before others rediscovered simplicity with smiley & honey...

Love it!! Yes - I think Paul Williams and David Anderle discussed that in a series in a magazine in the late 60's (maybe Crawdaddy) they mention the same examples of Dylan, The Band etc. It seems to me they were ahead of the curve a lot :))))

I first heard Wild Honey from the 1990s twofer CDs coupled with Smiley Smile. That particular CD release had a muddy mono mix that muted some of the subtle power and innovations of the songs. The title track, "Aren't You Glad", "Let the Wind Blow" & "Darlin" are great originals. There were excellent re-releases of Wild Honey in vinyl LP & (as Mathew mentioned) the two CD set Sunshine Tomorrow which has true stereo versions in 2018. I love the anecdotes about the creation of the album you guys discuss.

Add Dennis' "Be with Me" and Brian's "Time to Get Alone" and you have an underrated classic. Another amazing presentation guys!

I would be walking home from my friends house, he lived in a rich community on a hill, and when i'd be walking home at 2am on a friday or saturday night, i'd be walking down this hillside and looking at all the lights of the city, and that 12 string riff would come into my mind, every time. Find me another live album that would even come close the sound quality of In Concert for the time period, let alone exceed it. There were a few live albums that were released within the next few years of in Concert that had recording budgets exceeding In Concert that didn't come close in sonics. There are a few sweetening moments on that record by means of correcting a vocal line here and there, but to my ears, that record sounds honest. You had Frampton comes alive and Wings over America, which are loaded with studio trickery, and yet, they still do not come close to the quality of In Concert. It is by far, my favorite live album of all time. A good part of that album was recorded near where I lived at the time in New Jersey. One thing to point out is that you can tell the size of the venue with each song on that album. I had attended many concert at that venue near my house. It was called the Capitol Theater. It was a three thousand seat venue that had many of the top bands of the time. I saw The Rolling Stones there when they played a warm-up show prior to playing the big houses. The show at the Capitol theater was recorded using the Record Plant Mobile unit, which I had the pleasure doing some technical work on. It was the exact truck that recorded The Concert For Bangladesh at Madison Square Garden just a year before the recording of The Beach Boys. It was a 16 track studio in a truck and when you closed the door, you actually thought that you were inside a fully equipped control room in New York City. The songs from In Concert recorded at the Capitol Theater in 1972 were: Marcella, Wouldn't it be nice, Let the wind blow, Don't worry baby and Good Vibrations. Regarding Ed Carter and coming from a fellow bass player, is a monster musician who not only plays incredible bass, but also plays a bitching guitar! He plays the guitar solo on Bluebirds over the mountain. Would love to meet him someday!

Wow, Charlie! what a perspective you have! You know it's my favorite live album too (Kiss Alive! - 2nd:)) I had heard a little about the Record Plant truck but you make me feel like I'm right there. So cool to hear about venue sizes and those are some of my absolute faves on the record!! (Wouldn't It Be Nice #1) and I'm right with you about Ed's guitar playing - love the footage with he and Daryl opening with the horns, etc. at the 1969 Paris show and also footage of him playing acoustic guitar in Billy's film and many other spots - I know his background is DEEP and I'd love to pick his brain :))))

@@matthewhartzmusic1 I have a connection with Kiss Alive as well. In 1975, I was in middle school and I had a friend who was in my home room class who was currently living at that same foster home that Neil Bogart used to live in years earlier. Neil, in appreciation for the people who ran the foster home, used to send boxes of the latest Casablanca releases for the kids who lived in the foster home.. My school friend used to come to school with multiple titles of albums to give away to us. I got the first three Kiss studio albums, plus Kiss alive. He also had titles by the band Angel. After destroyer, we graduated and that was the end to the free Kiss album. Then, several years later, I was working as a bassist at various New York studios. Right Track studio was given the task of digitizing the Kiss catalog. Another firend of mine who was an assistant engineer at Right Track asked me to stick around as he wanted to play some tapes for me. When I walked into studio two control room, there were endless stacks of Kiss tapes up to the Dynasty album. He played me some raw tracks from Kiss alive before all of the overdubs. I was in shock at how bad they sounded without the sweetening. The vocals were totally out of tune, there were guitar mistakes all over the place and the entire sound was a mess. So, what you've probably heard about Kiss Alive is very true.... they overdubbed just about everything except the drums. I've run into Paul Stanley at different studios over time and he happens to be a great guy.

Matthew & Adam...... The best analysis of Smiley Smile ever!. I commented on your Smile review, that I was just 14 when Smile did not come out. Growing up in a small southeastern town in Idaho(like you did) before the internet, the only info about the new album was from teen magazines, like Hit Parader. I still have some issues from 1967. The were talking about how incredible the music was that Brian was working on, and talked about specific songs like Surf's Up, Barnyard Suite, Vega-tables, Cabin-essence, and The Elements. When I bought Smiley Smile in Sept 1967, I kept trying line up the Smiley Smile songs with the Smile songs I had heard about for months. I couldn't figure it out for years until the internet was established and I got some Smile bootleg cassettes that helped put the story together for me. Over the years, I have gotten to love Smiley Smile. However, I had no idea what She's Going Bald was about. I'm glad I did not know it at the time, since back then, they were all my heroes! Smiley Smile is one of my fav's from the boys. I obtained a copy of it and The Best of the Beach Boys in 1968 as a young boy at a store called John''s Bargain Stores in the suburbs of New York. Both records contained Good Vibrations. I played the crap out of those albums and, as a kid, records were not treated good. I ended up getting the two-fers on Reprise. a few years after that, I found a record store that was going out of business and upon checking out what they had, there were many original Capitol albums that were out of print for 99 cents each. I bought Shut down vol. 2 (mono), Today (Duophonic), Both versions of Smiley smile (Fake Stereo/Mono), Friends, and 2020. All were sealed and I still have them and are in excellent condition. The Pitch machine on She's going bald is called an Eltro machine. I actually saw one in person. It worked like a VCR in that it contained a rotating head. The faster the head spun, the higher the pitch and since the tape speed didn't change, the tempo remained as originally recorded. It was quite a cool device and it was the beginning of pitch correction and or time stretch, which now is a snap to do.

@infectioussneeze9099 even though he wasn't some drug head, Mike loved Brian's back to basics approach that included them all once again, as well as Mike's lyrics, and they just got stoned like crazy in the tent and made all sorts of weird, sloppy songs a year before the Beatles would plow the same kind of territory on the White Album.

Adam also notes the imagery of SS Windchimes. He’s on to something. The response vocals “wind chimes” sound sloppy because the timing does not line up: listen to when they each hit the “ch” of chimes. No one is together. I think this is their voices as wind chimes blowing in the breeze and hitting into each other in random succession. If I’m right, brilliant and sublime.
@matthewhartzmusic114 күн бұрын
Yes - I was pointing that out when I mentioned it almost seems "rubato" because sense of time is missing in spots :)) And that wind chimes analogy is great too!
@scottjkennedy17 күн бұрын
Halfway through the episode and I think Adam is picking up on “upside your head” sounding like a joke compared to other high vocals because it’s a rare moment of Mike doing a prominent falsetto. He’s not the only voice but he is the loudest and doesn’t have as smooth or natural of a falsetto as his cousins.
