It's super hard for me to resist secondhand yarn... "I might get an idea for that yarn just as I'm leaving the thrift store, but it will be gone when I get back." I have a bin full of "rescued yarn" and have decided not to buy any more without taking some out first.

I’m a crocheter and I seem to acquire yarn (gifted, leftover from projects where I estimated I’d need way more than I did, bought with a project in mind which was then abandoned) whilst following this rule. Luckily, I’m also a teacher, and because of this crochet club is usually very well stocked.

@@adrenalinjunkie9682 I do Tunisian crochet with sock weight yarn. You use a 5mm (ish) hook for a sock weight, and it's really easy to meld/ombre yarns because each row has two passes of yarn, but hey, this is why I have a sock yarn stash, not actually a good way to tackle it. But I thought I'd mention it if you hate knitting with sock weight and thought that tiny needles or hooks the only way.

I love your entire approach to learning how to do various crafts. I love seeing your excitement, how you try new stuff, and that you also sometimes just say "ah, fuck it, another approach will also look fine". Sometimes I get stuck in the perfectionist limbo of not starting a new thing because "what if i mess it up" and that attitude only holds me back. Watching you really inspires me

Quick tip in case anyone wants to the same double pattern top - if you don't want the knot at the back, then make the tie part as long as possible so you can tie it round the front - and if your weight fluctuates, you can always change the tie out if you just make the tie parts and actual top parts separate!

You might be happier with the black skirt by pleating the fronts and sides of your waistband - pleats get along much better with heavier fabrics than gathers do. In theory, you could pleat all around and add a placket for closure, but retaining the gather/elastic at the back will keep the ease of a pull-on and give grace for sizing changes.

With the thick black fabric, I would make a pinafore dress! Like an a-line, very square-y, sixties-ish, short pinafore. They're very versatile, especially if you already like dungarees :)

The Sophie scarf is tricky in a simple kind of way. If you ever try it again, put a stitch marker on the right side of the fabric so you don’t get it mixed up with your wrong side. Important on this pattern because all your increases are along one edge, not along both edges. You also have to be good at counting rows so that you get your increases equally spaced. I lose count easily, so I use a beaded necklace on a lightbulb stitch marker and move it along one bead for every row. Because I have to handle the beads every row, that reminds me to move them along. Other methods, like a paper tally, I just forget to record my count and keep merrily knitting then discover I’ve lost it. I thought I wouldn’t wear mine much but actually I do. It’s warm and comfy but light and doesn’t bulk out your coat or keep dropping off and trailing on the ground. And I think it makes me look French 👩‍🎨 😂

Leena, I just want you to know that, out of frustration and spite that the fashion world will not offer me the ethically made bright purple jumper of my dreams, I have taken the concept of ‘Fine, I’ll do it myself!’ to unforeseen extreme. Your experiments and garments have convinced me it’s possible! You are more sensible than me. There’s a methodical process to you building on your skills and gaining complexity in your projects. I really admire it. I’m just not emulating it! 🤣 Learning to knit by just Making A Jumper is almost definitely not what you’re Supposed To Do, but It’s Too Late, It’s Happening Now. Wish me luck!

I think you’d like a Korean hanbok style wrap skirt. Has pockets and super adjustable. You inspired me to make clothes too so I made a reversible Korean wrap skirt with linen and then one with boiled wool for winter. I wasn’t super sure how boiled wool would gather but it did well!

Took me until halfway through this video to realise I was knitting while watching your finished knitting projects! Currently knitting an 1890's sporting jumper entirely with rib stitch, once you find your rhythm with the knit one purl one it's actually quite therapeutic, it just requires a bit of patience to get there!

Now I had to google the color theory of purple 😆: Purple combines the calm stability of blue and the fierce energy of red. The color purple is often associated with royalty, nobility, luxury, power, and ambition. Purple also represents meanings of wealth, extravagance, creativity, wisdom, dignity, grandeur, devotion, peace, pride, mystery, independence, and magic. I love everything you made, I wish I wasn't such a big overthinker and would just start making my own clothes as well. Maybe this year🤞

Part of the process of learning to sew, is learning fabrics; how different fabrics behave, fall and perform. So your “fails” become lessons. Love watching your journey! Without an overlocker, besides binding your raw seams, learn the art of French Seams and Flat Felled Seams. There are so many KZfaq videos on how to do these. Practice on scraps. You will never look back!! Also, 2023 I finally made my first t-shirt. I was so terrified to try sewing with stretch fabric. Now I’ve made, like, 10 variations of shirts for myself, and heaps for my mother - I’ll never buy a t-shirt or turtleneck or sweater ever again now that I know they sew up so easily within an hour. The trick without an overlocker is… you don’t have to overlock stretch fabrics as they don’t fray; and Indi-pattern makers will show you how to do the various stretch stitches on your sewing machine; do buy a “twin needle” for “jersey fabric” (and at the same time, buy a standard needle for your machine for jersey, these have a tiny ball point particularly for stretch fabrics) to finish your hem and sleeves - seriously easy to use (just practice with scraps, and get a demonstration on KZfaq). My other first for 2023 was learning to sew with denim - which was a journey in itself😂.

I've been half-heartedly learning to sew (and mainly mending and sewing toys) for years now and am only juuuuust getting past the "quilting cotton works for clothes right?" Hahaha. Now I'm getting into random fabrics from the opshop! I made a huge skirt from a cotton tablecloth with this bold blue, red and white wavy pattern (it doesn't come across as a flag thank god) which turned out fantastic and I wear it all the time! I'm still scared of stretch fabrics.... Fleece is fine, the one t-shirt I made worked well but was so annoying to sew, and I made some velvet underwear that was going to be a set but the first part was such a pain that I never got around to the matching bralette! So I'm impressed with your confidence with stretch. Maybe I should go to a class or something

@helenm1085 Your skirt sounds fab and unique! I think the difference when learning to sew knit fabric is choosing your indi-pattern maker well. Most great indi-pattern makers that I've been using have really great instructions and video tutorials; far better than the "big 4", which have never been great but are getting better since Mimmi G joined Simplicity. I love Pattern Emporium for stretch patterns, but also Tilly and the Buttons has a stretch book with patterns - well known for her tutorials - and she has courses. Helen's Closet is another fave for really clear instructions and finishing techniques. Lena mentioned Friday Pattern Company - they are great for KZfaq tutorials, they also have t-shirt patterns... and once you perfect the fit of a t-shirt, you can make them with short sleeves, long sleeves, sleeveless, v-neck, round neck, turtle neck, puff sleeves, etc.

I’m so inspired by the way you carry on with this pursuit, even after a disappointing result. I’ve always enjoyed sewing, but I avoid making clothes because there’s nothing more disheartening than finishing a project only to discover you hate the fabric choice or it doesn’t fit like you want it to. You influenced me to learn to knit, so maybe wardrobe sewing is in my future!

Re: black tablecloth skirt, it's more typical to use thinner fabrics for gathers and elasticated casings VS thick fabric. I don't know if you've tackled closures like button bands or zippers but you could transform the skirt by making an A-line maxi with a flat waistband.

You might enjoy the Stitch Upon A Time Scrundle Wear knickers pattern. Extremely easy to make and great for upcycling old tshirts that still have some stretch in them.

With the black skirt fabric you could give the Paola Work wear Jacket a go? It's a free pattern by the fabric store, and it's a slightly oversized work wear style jacket and that fabric would probably be a good weight for it. You could also crop it if you don't have enough fabric! I've made it a few times and it's such a simple construction that I've been able to play around with the pattern a lot 😊

The scalloped scarf is gorgeous! From what I can tell through the camera (and without seeing the pattern) I’d say you need to pick up stitches on the other sides of the scarf, that way the little ridge on the new set of stitches ends up on the opposite side to the ridge formed but the edge of the previous section. PS: Knitting the round is DEFINITELY easier/quicker than knitting flat, I think patterns aimed at beginners shy away from in the round because the garment construction is a bit more complicated.

Leena, have you thought about making socks? They're my favorite train knitting project!! For a beginner, I'd recommend socks with worsted weight yarn, the "Quick Birthday Socks" pattern by Laura Spargo Anderson is a good one, using knit and purl stitches and slightly "upping the game" on knitting in the round.

I'm so so pleased you are on this journey Leena! I've been knitting and crocheting since age 8 and started sewing a year ago. A couple things I would highly recommend to you as you continue knitting is to take into account gauge and blocking if you haven't already. It seems like that wool and the gang hat pattern really depends on those 2 things for it to look like a normal hat. For many years I never bothered to look into blocking and gauge and let me tell you, when I started doing those 2 things it's elevated my knitting immensely! You are such an inspiration to me and I'm really excited to see your 2024 projects ❤

Agreed! I'd also say, and this is a wild assumption on my part, that the Wool and the Gang pattern might just be badly designed/didn't go through much test-knitting. Some patterns are just meh like that

Your last shirt is just gorgeous on you. I need this pattern because it is exactly what I want to make. I also don't think it needs the buttons. It will actually go with a lot more things without the buttons. If you don't like the neck finish just put a clip underneath at the neck to get to little bib to sit down flush to the body. I also think your green sleeveless draw string neckline dress is heaven on you. I admire your dedication to knitting. It's the one thing I never took to. I'm looking forward to all your projects in 2024. PS. What is the watermelon saga? I'm not British so it may not have been a thing in my country. That romper is so cute btw.♥

talking about elasticated waists, i found myself being drawn towards those kind of skirts/pants with the elastic only in the back of the garment. This way, the front lies pretty flat but you still have the wiggle room for cookies! i'm not sure how easy/hard it would be to saw it because im not a sawer, but maybe you could look into it if it may be your cup of tea too!

If you like the look of a ribbed scarf but hate doing tons of 1x1 rib (it's me, hello), you could try a 2x2 broken rib stitch and see if you like that better. Kniting flat, it's a row of k2, p2, then a row of purl. In bulky yarn it gives a similar look to a 1x1 rib but I really enjoy it a lot more. I also like to cast on 2 extra stitches and Sl1 *work in pattern *k1, which gives it a nice edge

You did a wonderful job learning to knit and sew. I have a friend who both knits and crochets. She prefers the latter. She just loves doing it so much that she does it all the time. Yes yarn work can be compulsive. She actually makes hats for charity since nobody can possibly use that many crocheted garments. One year she made over 700 beanies, that went for several mutual aid groups, children's hospital, several local schools, and a group that provide showers and new clothing for houseless folks. .

Well done! Congratulations on all of the finished projects. This momentum of repeating things successful for you looks like it is helping you tackle projects of greater difficulty with confidence. Good strategy! When drafting your own patterns, or cloning, it’s difficult to think of all the things-I’m learning these skills now and fighting overwhelm. You probably know, but it’s important to mark the grain line on a swooshy skirt pattern so that the weave of the fabric helps you get the same effect every time. The brain can only remember so much, and the direction of the grain can really make a difference on a circle/wrap skirt pattern like yours. I’m glad you’re not giving up after the first try-your challenges are so encouraging!

I think the black and grey skirt would be cute if you turned it into a light tanktoppy shawl. I've seen people take a large rectangle silk scarf and tie it in a few places and you can put it on like a backpack or jacket and it's all flowy and super cute

I also tried doing the Sophie scarf really early on in my knitting career, and also moved on to do something more complicated instead! If you're anything like me, the issue might've been that you prefer reading your fabric over keeping mental counts, and if you lose count with a Sophie it's really really hard to figure out where you were in the pattern. I think "knitting in the round is easier" is fairly uncontroversial, but it also depends of how you were taught - I've met some older knitters who are just not comfortable with knitting in the round.

I misread the thingi as FearOfMakeDo, and yeh I think that would be a good thing to talk about. Cuz I've been around crafting all my life and am fairly confident in my skills, and even I can feel scared of ruining a garment, wasting time, energy and money etc. It's probably an offshoot of fear of failure, but I also think it's unique to be afraid of your clothes falling apart as you wear them. Which ironically fast fashion clothes already do, but we don't feel responsible when that happens x). That was a tangent. Thanks for another great video, love seeing this ^^

For the black skirt, just redo the waistband with pleats and a regular flat band instead of elastic. Make the closure on the side and add pockets. There will be less bulk in the waist, you'll have pockets, and you don't have to unpick the whole thing.

Something that made me fall in love with elastic waistbands is sewing a line of zig zag stitch along the middle of the elastic and casing - it makes the waistband sit flat, evens out the gathers and stops the elastic curling!

As a fellow novice sewist, here are some tips I've learned: with heavier, "quilting"esque cottons avoid garments with drape, and for bottoms don't hesitate to add darts to the waistline to make it more fitted even if you add an elastic band! For wrap skirts you want to cut out a rectangle, using the hem measurement to get an idea of how much fabric you need (I've found usually 2 yards/meters is a good wifht), and then set the longest stitch on your machine to create the ruffles (pull the threads until you get something a little wider than your waistline).

I really enjoyed watching your video, and I love the patina blouse! I started sewing 20 years ago and at that time, my first computer did not have much memory space so most of the photos of my first clothes are lost (I deleted them to make space again) and I regret this very much. It's so interesting to watch someone else at the start of their sewing journey :) choosing the right fabric is one of the trickiest part of sewing and even I sometimes fail at this, after making many hundreds of pieces. Also, this is one of the reasons while copying clothes is not as trivial as one might think - the other one is that even non-elastic fabrics stretch and change over time while being worn and washed and often lose their original shape.

I love how you go gradually into this... I just jump into making things.. my first project was a pair of slippers from a duvet (not a cover a tog 10 duvet) with a kids machine which I broke the needle like 3 or 4 times, because of course you can't just fit 2 layers of duvet in your sewing machine!! I'm cloning my fav hoody this month, I'll tell you how it goes :P

The no button top looks way more chic and I'd love that to the default of button up tops! I loved button up shirt but usually I keep them buttoned and slip them over my head anyway! I started knitting a few days ago and I'd love to make your go-to hat as my first piece of clothing! (I'm currently just knitting the beginning of a scarf I know I won't finish)

This comment should probably go under a bookish video, but I'm currently reading "These Precious Days", an essay collection by Ann Patchett and I can't stop thinking about you. Crazy as it may be since I don't know you personally, but one essay is literally called "How Knitting Saved My Life. Twice."😅. I don't know if I should recommend it to you because it reminds me of you so much, that maybe it won't be anything new to you. I do know that I love reading this book so do with this information what you want!

Ahhh what a great shirt! I love making shirts they are so easy and yet endlessly entertaining. Buttonholes are some of my favourite things to do. I do them by hand because it for me it is quicker than fighting with the sewing machine and I guess, a bit like knitting is for you.

I'm so with you on the hatred of the rib stitch, it's so boring 😂 if you want to make a scarf with similar effect but with an, imo, more fun stitch, you could try brioche! And I'm also 100% with you on preferring to knit in the round, I love knitting sweaters in the round, and I knit everything on circular needles, even if I'm going back and forth. It's so much easier on the hands and arms and stuff I think? Anyway, love coming along on your knitting journey. I've been on my own journey since about 2020 when I knitted my first (horrible) sweater, and now I've done a bunch and I'm currently working on the cable knit Moby Sweater from petite knit which I think is the most fun thing I've ever knitted!

brioche is fun if you (1) don't make any mistakes or (2) after you learn how to fix mistakes in brioche. a brioche scarf was the first thing i ever knit, and it was a blast until any time that i dropped a stitch or had to frog. can't tell you how many tears i shed as an absolute beginner knitter who couldn't read my stitches, because i didn't realize that brioche is not supposed to be a beginner stitch.

Almost all of my sewing fails have been due to little consideration of the material type on my part. It’s a hard one to learn as there may be several different lessons before you get it! Love the two toned top! The scarf is kind of giving frilled necked lizard - not for me but it looks cool.

Doing my first topdown seamless round jumper at the moment and I'm in love with it! Been knitting for a while now but you've inspired me to start a proper notebook for my Finished Knits detailing the wool and pattern and alterations etc. I can already see it's making me much more aware of what I'm doing with each pattern and what each stitch is for.

Sat writing a list of alterations for clothes that *mostly but don't quite* work, while I watched this! i.e: add elastic to waistband, add side panels so it sits right, sew design over stain etc. 😸

i was taught how to crochet and sew growing up. i really want to do a lot of sewing this year, and i would love to learn knitting! crochet is so difficult ㅠㅠ but i want to get better at that too, in time. im really impressed with everything you created! you'll definitely be able to create masterpieces soon enough. i saw you wear your purple knitted sweater in a video without knowing you had knitted it yourself, and i thought that it was beautiful. the fact you created it yourself is so cool!

With the Bathhurst top, you could make the ties longer so it can tie in front or the back. Then people wouldn't be uncomfortable wearing it when on chairs 👍
