While Original Sin 2 is certainly the most popular, the Divinity universe has a full five more games that add to the lore and here I'm ranking them all and explaining what they're about.

@Darkcloud It was refreshing how unapologetically fantasy RPG it was. The dragon transformation is the best in any game to date (Breath of Fire is turn-based; Skyrim's Dragon Aspect and Call was underwhelming; we never got Scalebound)

It's my favourite of the series but I haven't played Original Sin 2. The humor in this title is just great. I's easily in my top 10 RPGs of all time, even with all the flaws. I would love to see a remake.

@@zuiop9993 Original sin is pretty close in terms of humor, but I think it takes itself more seriously. There's also massive gameplay differences of course, ego draconis is almost like an MMO in the feel of combat. It's hard to describe.
@zuiop9993
@zuiop9993 4 ай бұрын
@@ihaveachihuahau I played Original Sin 1 and it does come close at times. You're right, Divinity 2 can be very silly, but I think they did it mostly really well. I just really prefer not looking down at your party all the time. The perspective really hurts my ability to feel like I'm exploring a real world and be invested in the story. I did enjoy the title, but not nearly as much as I did Divinity 2. It's just hard for a title to overcome this personal preference if it is fundamentally different. I've also not played Baldurs Gate 3 yet. I'm sure I will play both BG3 and DOS2 at some point in the future and I'll have a good time, just not as good as it could've been with a 3rd person title. (I don't have as much time playing games as I used to, so I'm always behind a few years and have sooo many titles on my wishlist)

@@zuiop9993 I would recommend Baldur's Gate 3 as someone who generally doesn't like turn based games. It's so good. Maybe watch some videos on it, but I have loved it so far. I usually like games like Elden Ring or Dark Souls more than turn based games like Divinity Original Sin. But BG3 overcomes that for me at least. It's really good.

Divinity Original Sin 1 was my first Divinity game as well as my first CRPG I ever played, but even now that I have played many more games like it, I still regard DOS1 as my favourite. I think this is primarily due to its music, atmosphere, and setting. Kirill Pokrovsky was a genius and his music combined with the more lighthearted writing in DOS1 than DOS2 made for an incredibly enjoyable world to explore. Not to mention that the characteristic witty Larian writing was very prevalent in DOS1, perhaps even moreso than DOS2, which made doing all the side quests in the game an enjoyable experience rather than a chore. I distinctly remember reading every single one of the graves in the Cyseal church just because I liked the witty writing so much. Cyseal is still one of my all time favourite zones in any RPG, and I can still hear the repeating dialogue from the market in my head to this day. "No man has as many friends as the man with many cheeses" are words to live by.

Recently finished a co-op playthrough of Original Sin 1with my girlfriend and we we're blown away by the system, story, combat, voice acting etc I've been trying to find a game with the same or similar combat system since. We started Original Sin 2 about 3-4 hours in and it has not been very stellar yet. It's odd to me how they shrank all the numbers and the ap system, needing to level Memory for more skill slots is some bs (maybe you get lots of attribute points later? We're only level 2 so far), and the UI is much messier like the small hotbar with 5 pages in the first game was incredible! I'm also hoping we get the Teleport Pyramids soon.

I love how so many people first played the Dragon Knight Saga and love it and would love either a sequel in the same genre of DKS where we see the end to the Damian storyline or a remake of the games. I love the game as well, its the one that introduced me to the Divinity series and I've wished for years for a sequel, it's my favority RPG of all time (very biased since its my childhood), along with DA:Origins, Dark Souls 1, Skyrim, Sacred, Kingdoms of Amalur and the first Metro games, there's surely some other I'm misremembering but you get the point. I've never really liked turn based RPGs but now that I've tried and loved Baldur's Gate 3, I'll probably give Original Sin 2 a chance.

My favorite is still the one where you can turn into a dragon at will, but I respect DOS2 as the better game even if it's also the most frustrating to me (those line of sights !). DOS1 was interesting mechanics-wise and I prefered it without the "armor negates any debuff" system of the 2nd, but it's one of the only RPG I struggled to finish because the story was so boring after the 1st act (and it's really long, doubly so because it's turn-based). I barely remember anything that happened, it's a good thing it had no bearing on the setting at all IIRC. so : 1/ dragon knight 2/ DOS 2 3/ Dragon commander (skipping the RTS part) 4/ DOS 1 not played : divine & beyond

@armelior4610
@armelior4610 Жыл бұрын
Totally agree. The RTS part is really boring : rush with the units you bring or it's a slog - and turning into a dragon doesn't work with controlling your army. But on the plus side you can complete the game without ever setting foot (or wing I guess) on the RTS battlefield and just autoresolve every battle.

Man, I remember playing Ego Draconis when it came out and really loving it, until I got my dragon power and the game broke and gave me like 9999 or so upgrade points (or whatever the system was). The game basically forced a cheat on me and that took all my interest to play it away. I even tried to use cheat software to get rid of the points, but they always came back, so eventually I dropped it and never went back :( Later when I played D:OS1+2 there where names and things that were weirdly familiar (especially Braccus Rex comes to mind), but initially I didn't really know why, until I realised the games were all from the same series. I had never played any other Divinity game other than Ego Draconis and though I had seen the name Divine Divinity before, I didn't really know those two games where connected either. Ego Draconis is a game they just don't make anymore. They took a ton of risks with that game, and a lot of them really didn't pay off, but the game is so unique and the concept is so cool that everyone who played it as a kid or whatever loves that game. It's very janky, and the combat is almost like an MMO to me, idk, but I have so much nostalgia for that game. Always remembered (spoilers) that when you become the dragon knight, you can suddenly jump like 5x higher than before. The starting area is really cool too. I still remember the layout of the starting zone to this day, lol. I got stuck there for so long as a kid.

Divinity 2 was the game that taught me that the way I was playing RPGs made them feel more like work than fun. I am compelled to "do" everything in a game, or else I feel I'm getting a fraudulent experience- or something.. I probably spent around 100 hours on fort joy alone while finding all the different ways to escape, and just got burnt out.. I think it's the combination of the "act" structure where I know I'll never be able to come back, and the open-ended nature of the game. I still haven't gone back, and I still struggle to not think of RPGs as work nowadays..

I loved both OS 1 & 2 , but didn't finish either of them, and I put some serious time in the first one. Not sure why. I want to support the company so will probably buy Baldur's Gate even though I'm not so interested.

I really enjoyed Dragon Commander although I think it could have benefited a lot from having an Early-Access period. I found the RTS combat to be way too unbalanced even on easier difficulties. I ended up cheesing the game by only attacking enemies capital as that took down the whole faction. Divine Divinity does sound interesting although I don't know if it's better to play it or just watch a story playthrough.

I really wish I had liked Divinity OS2 more, it was the only Divinity game I played so I don't know if the others were like this, but the skill system, where I have to buy books instead of gaining new abilities by leveling up certain skills, was kind of frustrating to me.

I have only played Divinity Original Sin 1 (i have Divinity 2+DLCs and DOS2), so take my comments with a grain of salt. I wont specifically talk about the game i played nor compare it to other RPGs (WRPGs or JRPGs), since i believe its flaws (or quirks) were fixable and they would detract from the conversation. As far as i understand, Divinity games are in the same timeline, but removed from one another by multitudes of years. My initial thoughts were that perhaps its better if more games are located in a small period. That way the Divinity games will have stronger political worldbuilding (nations), they havent really explored that. However after checking a bit with the timeline, Larian can also put several Divinity games in the timeline (some examples -8800 BD to -1 BD any major incident, 100 AD Dwarves vs Demons, 600 AD Chaos+Legion of Damned, 1300 AD Order of Dragon Slayers). Perhaps its better if they stick to that formula, since it is what they do best.

Good ranking, I would switch Divinity 2 ED (together with Flames of Vengeance) with Original Sin 1 tho. OS1 is storywise absolutely forgettable.

as for mentioning divinity 2 story and them possibly continuing it, I doubt it. Larian has been on record of saying before DOS 1 they didn't have actual story people keeping consistent story of everything. This leads to every game from divine divinity to original sin 1, breaking the lore in some way that makes 0 sense. Divinity OS 1 they finally brought someone in to restructure the lore and keep it pretty well contained. Then DOS2 they had someone else do it, possibly a team, and lead to a much stronger story telling with little breaks in the story. However there were still some hiccups that are found between DOS1 and DOS2 they've mainly focused on these being the true stories. Now I can't remember if it was the same interview or somewhere else where they say this, so take this with a grain of salt, but larian also said everything before dos 1, is essentially like stories told theought time and passed on. None of its 100% canon anymore and rather myths that are possible to be baked in truth. So I'm not sure they'll ever continue divinity 2 story, but they might "remake" the story in new DOS 1&2 style.

Lionheart but just barely. First half is great and the last half is a terrible dungeon crawl as opposed to BD just being all bad.

This seems to be a hot take, though I can't understand why: DOS1 is much, much better than DOS2. It's crazy to me how everyone claims DOS2 improves on DOS1, when on average it's a downgrade. 1. Story/characters - This is usually sold as the biggest improvement. Don't get me wrong, it's an improvement, but only because the story in DOS1 is the most generic thing possible. It's literally like if someone told the writers of Fast&Furious movies to make a script of a fantasy RPG game. There are some quests/dialogues in DOS2 that are memorable Lohse/doctor story as a notable example. Still, most of it is still dumb and/or generic, at least compared to classic isometric RPGs it's trying to emulate. Pillars of eternity and especially Tyrany came out around the same time, and both blow DOS2 out of the water when it comes to writing. 2. Atmosphere/tone - A big downgrade from DOS1. DOS2 is all over the place, there is no tonal consistency in neither visual design or writing. One moment blood is splattering all over the screen as you are fighting religious fanatics that are also slavers and dr. Mengele enthusiasts, the next you are talking to a squirrel with a superiority complex riding a skeleton. It's like the writers/designers were constantly on mushrooms. Not only are the "darker" parts waaaay too edgy, the immersion is constantly being broken by goofy stuff so you can't even enjoy it as a dark fantasy shlock. Same dichotomy is seen in gameplay: both the mechanics and visual effects are very colourful and funny (MGS style sneaking is a great example), but the enemies are trying to be very dark and scary. DOS1 is dumb fun. Everything is bright, fun and never takes itself seriously. You fight a giant snow man in order to rescue a well from its life of loneliness. Fits perfectly with the dumb and generic main story. It's a lot like a fun tabletop D&D session with your friends where everyone is very high. 3. Combat - DOS1 has one of the best character building and combat systems in any classless RPG game ever. The only issues are numbers-related (attributes don't do much, a lot of useless traits, too easy to unlock high level spells etc.), it could be made essentially perfect through tweaks while keeping the core system intact. Instead, DOS2 ruins everything that was good, while not addressing any of the issues. The armor system is terrible (though there is potential), it makes any non-damage build useless. Alternating turns is something I'm convinced was added 2 days before game launched because I refuse to believe something this dumb passed through testing. Instead of high spells being overpowered, now low spells are overpowered, which is obviously worse because there is no cost to learning them on every single char. 90% of skills are unusable, while the other 10% are overpowered. Environment interaction is effectively gone due to necrofire. Overall, the game is too easy if played optimally (max damage glass cannon on everyone and targeting the next enemy to take a turn) and unplayable outside of easy/story difficulty if not played optimally. Overall, absolutely terrible, not changing anything from DOS1 combat would have made DOS2 a much better game. All in all, my ranking would be the same as if you switched DOS 1 and 2 in your ranking (i.e. DOS1, DD, DOS2, ego draconis, rest is garbage).

I guess my big question is why do you prefer Pathfinder over OS2? You have always why you like both but like what puts WotR over the edge? I really want to get into it but man I hate the real time with pause. I have big hopes for BG3 to be true DnD but turn based.

Yeah, I pretty much agree with the list. I'd say that Pillars of Eternity and Pathfinder games are MUCH better rpg's IMO but I still find Divinity games an okay experience. They are nowhere near as good as some masterpieces like Deadfire but D:OS2 is super enjoyable game.

I will say in regards to Dragon Commander I think it’s less that they didn’t have a clear idea of what it was and more that it got severely rushed and cannibalized by the more successful Divinity Original Sin. Both games were in development at the same time and in fact Dragon Commander initially was meant to be the bigger primary project but part way through development Larian opted to shift manpower and funding away from Dragon Commander to focus on Original Sin which they were more passionate about. Great for Original sin and probably a good decision in the long run given their success since then but basically screwed over Dragon Commander and any fans excited for it and as a result it just got hastily cobbled together and pushed out the door.
