OK now things get interesting... My favourite service station, Severn View (Aust) Firstly, there's a rather jolly bridge to look at and secondly this particular service station has many reminders of how things were "Back in the day" so if you know where to look....
Luckily we did, so join us as we explore Severn View before heading over the iconic bridge to the wonderful Wales and explore all of what the Welsh service stations have to offer.
We are embarking on a journey across the UK to visit all 93* motorway service stations.
*It turns out there are 94.
In this episode, we'll be stopping at;
Severn View - M48
Magor - M4
Cardiff Gate - M4
Cardiff West - M4
Sarn Park - M4
Swansea West - M4
Pont Abraham - M4
Give our twitter a follow -- @JonShenanigans We'll be sure to update it as we go along.
Join us as we take in the various sights and sounds of the motorway service station.

Interesting fact: The Severn Bridge does not land in Wales. It goes from England to England. It's the Wye Bridge which takes you from England to Wales. It's all part of the same complex of 4 bridges tho. (Aust Viaduct, Severn Bridge, Beachley Viaduct & Wye Bridge)

Until recently I hadn't been to Severn View services since I was very young and I could have sworn it used to be bigger - turns out that's because it DID used to be bigger! Thanks for confirming I'm not losing my mind. Also, fun fact about Pont Abraham, just behind where you were filming outside is where my mum accidentally shut my fingers in the door of my grandads Austin Princess, breaking one them, in about 1990. That finger is still crooked to this day. Happy memories.

Severn View (Aust pronounced Ost) is so disappointing nowadays compared to its former glory, not much more than a glorified shed. The building was very imposing for a service station and the views second to none from the restaurant. It’s well worth the walk up to the top to take in the view as you found. We were bussed down the the bridge from primary school in Olveston for the opening ceremony by the Queen and sat on the then open grassy embankments waving our Union Jacks! Life was a lot simpler then…. Useless fact: the pylons to the west of the bridge are the second highest in the U.K.and carry 275kV cables across the river.

Aust Services were a major stopping point for us a a family in a caravan, several times an overnight stop as we started a caravan holiday from Wales to the Continent!! It sported the biggest motorway cafe in the UK - it was ENORMOUS and had big windows for views over the bridge (in that privately owned building now).I also remember that rampway you showed in your video too - somehow it went "down" into the services - I think it was under a road - but I have no memory of t coming back up. I do remember being left there by my school trip to the London Museums - because I got too engrossed with the games machines they had there at the time - it was only 1982 at the time ...

As a young adult I used to work in the old services back in the 90's when it was owned by Rank - in the ice cream parlour outside next to the main entrance doors. Of course back then there was only one bridge, so in the summer especially, the place was heaving. Crazy days. 🙂

I noted when I visited recently that the motorway lighting when it was the M4 appears to have disappeared. Back in the sixties, it had tall lighting masts on the run up to the old bridge on both sides.

When I lived in Gloucester many years ago, Aust services and its amazing restaurant were then only place open at 3am. So you and your latest young lady friend had been kicked out of pub, Indian and nightclub and she didn't want to go home at that time when she could tell her Mum she'd stayed at a mates place. The bridge was all lit up with fairy lights and the car park was quiet enough😉 Ahhh, the romance of it all😁

When I was a kid, living locally, my grandparents used to take me and siblings for days out to Aust services. I ate in the massive restaurant, walked under the breach (slippery rocks!) and would buy cassettes from WH Smith or whatever the equivalent was. Weird choice for a family day trip but it's left me with a sense of nostalgia about what the services became.

Not ‘oust’ nor ‘ost’ but ‘orst’. Back in 1966 when the Severn Bridge opened I was (at a very young age) living on a canal boat near Frampton-on-Severn not far away to the north. I remember seeing the procession of official cars for the opening driving along the A38 from Gloucester. The restaurant inside the original service building had spectacular views across the estuary. Service was not great but what I remember most, from soon after it opened, was a machine on the back counter into which pellets were dropped at the top, churning out stringy chips at the bottom.

I visited here with my family in the early 1980's, on the way to holiday. (When it was still Aust Services) We ordered drinks, and I got a lemon Fanta. The serving lady filled my glass very full, and suggested I take a mouthful from the top so it didn't spill. I did. The Fanta was very cold, and extremely fizzy. The effect on me was instant. A very loud, and resonant belch, which echoed round the cafeteria, and silenced it. My dad and kid brother laughed, but mum wanted the floor to swallow her up. Never had cause to go there since.

You forgot to mention that all motorway services in Wales are on one side of the motorway, accessed from roundabouts connected to local roads, rather than slip roads of the motor carriage way. All of them are therefore accessible to all traffic. Does that still make them motorway services?

I’m semi-aware of one general fact about Welsh motorway services that wasn’t mentioned in this video - that building the Welsh portion of M4 into the 70s if I recall right, DfT axed plans to build exits for and create services then, as a cost cutting measure. Probably due to the inflation they had back then, like we are going through now in 2022. I remembered reading about this somewhere as you were mentioning all the opening dates, some 80s, most later. Would be interested to know if all the services had dedicated slipways added to the motorway for them, or if they are using the pre-existing junctions?

I just had to look it up myself. Apparently Richie Edwards the bassist was in The Darkness, whilst this Richie was a guitarist and in Manic Street Preachers. I'm guessing their quick check of wikipedia didn't go beyond the first part of the first line of the article for the one in The Darkness, where 'bassist' is mentioned, and so they didn't read on past that part and therefore didn't know they had the wrong one and hence the wrong instrument.

@@MrDannyDetail Also, there are fans of MSP who'll tell you that there's evidence that shows Richie's disappearance was staged. Investigator Richard D Hall seems to have doubts, especially over the police "investigation" that was perfunctory at best, assuming that if someone parks their car by a bridge, then "disappears", they MUST have taken their own life by jumping off the bridge.
