There's just something about E-Drums. I admire how far technology has come and how good they have gotten, but that feeling of banging an acoustic kit that feels huge and sounds huge is just priceless.

I had the HD3 and I could never do semiquavers (16th notes) on the bass drum pedal. It drove me crazy. I just sold it and got a Roland TD-17KV. I LOVE the kick drum and snare. It's so nice to be able to play with a normal bass drum pedal again. Thanks Justin for all your hard work doing these reviews. You helped me to choose my new kit. Also, greetings from Australia

Thanks for this interesting video! Largely as a result of your reviews I upgraded to a Roland KD10 kick tower and it is brilliant. I love the slightly cushioned feel, double pedal triggering, medium weight and sturdiness. Plus it's also a relatively cheap option as kick towers go. 👍

Great video! I love history and this wraps up the history of Roland kicks very well. I would disagree about the TD1 pedal. It is hands down my favorite. Inexpensive, portable, and VERY quiet. I agree that it does not feel like a normal kick pedal. Frankly, no edrums feel like real drums. Best played heel down for accuracy. Anyway, I have two of these and use them for simply augmenting my acoustic set with various sounds. I see it as the BT-1 for your feet. Simple and versatile. By the way, the hi-hat pedal looks the same, but does not act the same.

Great vid, I didn't know the kd120 had been around since 1998. Still, it's my favorite for feel vs cost. Has a great feel but can be had fairly cheap (I actually got mine for 120 dollars with the mesh head being ripped, cheap fix and I was good to go!)

I’ve used the RT-30k on 20”, 22” and 24” bass drums. It worked on all three but best on the 20”. I think the main issue was double triggering per the heads vibrating from the air movement. It takes a bit of tweaking but works well. Same with Snare and Toms. The smaller diameter the better it works.

It s quite easy to have a very stable KD-9 ... You need to adjust the angle of the plate to fit your particular kickdrum pedal . Just loosen the 2 big hex screws , adjust the angle so the pad+pedal are sitting flush on the floor , then screw it tightly ... It wont moove so much . Another thing is to choose a stiff carpet . I use the kind of carpet tiles you find in shops or offices , thick and stiff and also very flat .

I am a few months in to a TD-27. During the ordering of it I made a case (with Guitar Center) that the KD-10 was the weak point in the kit and convinced them to sell me a KD-120 for the difference in the cost of them which was $200 off the kit. Bought the KD-120 for $250 ...and I am so glad I did. The kit also looks way better. I really wanted the KD-140 but at over $1k, I couldn't really justify it. They even let me keep the KD-10 and it is still in the unopened box. One of the posters here asked if the 120 is loud. I would say yes, absolutely it is.

I turned 60 and today bought myself a set of open box TD-27KV for $2850 & free shipping which I thought was fair price. Always wanted to learn drums and been playing guitar my whole life. I was just thinking that adding a bigger kick like the TD 120 seems like it would just make the entire experience more enjoyable and I came across your comment which confirmed what I was already thinking. The cool thing is the drums were not shipped yet as they are waiting for me to decide which hardware to get. So on Monday going to swap the KD-10 and pay difference for the KD 120. So grateful I read your post!!!. Also want to go double bass. Do you like the Roland Noise eater products like RDH-102 A Double Bass and RDH 120A HHT pedal? That's my biggest confusion at the moment. What hardware should I get? I am a total newbie so appreciate any advice. Thanks and hoping I made right choice on this model as I almost bought the TD 17KVX. But bigger is usually better and I liked the 18 inch Ride and larger digital snare. So the KD-120 is the only item I am upgrading. Plus need a comfy throne. So not going to be stingy on that. Any recommendations? 🙏

Had a KD-9 and man that was a pain to use, for singles it’s not too shabby but that thing becomes the San Andreas fault line when you try using double bass pedals with it. Eventually got a KD-120 from Edrumcenter and I’ve never been happier. It’s solid, stable, and triggers a lot better than the KD-9. The bass drum towers are fine if you’re only using a single pedal but if you’re wanting to go the double route you have to buy the better bass drum pads

@@dannylorenze6188 I just replaced the foam pad in my VAD306 (really just a KD10 at heart) because of deep indentation. Turns out those appear after a few strokes of the beater. The foam is very easy to replace, takes about 20 seconds, but you can only get them from Sweetwater to my knowledge and they go fast everytime Roland sends a batch overseas. 50 bucks after shipping costs. I am going to try a patch or something, call me crazy but having a flat surface seems like a good idea to me. I think it takes a while before we notice the indentation(s) because it doesnt necessarily jump out at you depending on lighting. But I made a point to check it the moment I played on the new foam.

Good review as always. My purpose of a e-kit is to have a small footprint and quite practice. Also triggering SD3 for some recording ideas. The bass drum needs to feels solid and close to the real thing. Every BD will feel different but at least close to play accurately. The conversion kits are too big and noise for my use. I would just play an acoustic set if I could be loud and have room. You can deaden the sound as much as the conversion BD. I still have the Roland TD-30KV with the add ons. I have been on the fence about going for the digital ride, HH, and SD on the 50X. I would still want to use the same BD. I would actually just get a 50X set that has the parts I want and sell doubles. The toms on the kits with the 140 BD and lower level than the ones on my 30KV. Just waiting for a great deal to pop up. the 140 is still my choice.

TD9 player, stable on a synthetic grip mesh (used in car trays etc) on top of pile carpet. After owning from new for almost a decade, I’ve just looked into rotating the pad as I prefer a lower than centre beater point. However when the plastic shell cover is removed it’s a sandwich of mesh and foam on a plate with foam mountings glued to the robust, metal frame. So, if you wanted to rotate it it’d be a. a major task b. likely to easily damage the mounting foam c. Not gain much in sound quality (it’s a single, piezo, disc, trigger sensor). In Roland’s wisdom the materials used are extremely durable and I’d expect a tear to be the ultimate fate of these particular pads. How adjustable are the higher end models heads’, if at all, Justin? Or similarly are there other manufacturers that do have adjustable heads on their KDs? Great review btw 👍

What do you think about replacing a KD-10 (using it with a Drumtec sound absorbing beater) for a KT-10? I have a problem with both volume and vibration, so that's why I've built a riser and I'm using the Drumtec beater, but honestly I don't like the feeling that much and the standard beater is way too loud.

I have the KD-9, and I have never had a creeping issue... and I am a pretty heavy hitter who always plays heel-up. I always use a quality drum rug, and I believe that having good pedals that stay put on their own also helps a ton. If you have kick pedals that slide around, I'm sure the grip of the KD-9 won't be able to overcome that extra force. Honestly, it shouldn't need to. As far as feel, I absolutely love the feel of the pillow pad on it. Great kick tower; stays in place, feels good, and takes some serious abuse without ever failing me.

I have a KD-9 and oh boy let me tell you about it moving around. My dad is a beast so he made all the DIY options that I needed to stabilize my kit (TD-25KV) from moving around (I am in a very very tight space). The whole drumset is sitting on a noise eating surface my dad made (forgot which material it is) and the surface with the drumset is on the carpet. To get the KD-9 to stop moving was the hardest of them all. Put it against the rack-slips sideways, spikes-punctured through the DIY moise eater. So my dad made a very thin wooden plate (some weird type of wood) in the shape of all my pedals which are glued to it and then that is glued to my DIY noise eater. The plate where the KD-9 is extends so the pedal and the KD-9 are glued to it and it is glued to the floor which FINALLY stopped the goddamn KD-9 from moving. I plan to maybe get a Drum-Tec 18 inch kick by the end of 2020 if I can even make space for it. Sorry for the long story, hope you get a good laugh from it!

However I don't own that shitty KD-9 now anymore, I got myself a Drum Tec 18 inch kick like I said I was going to. Basically can't go anywhere now. As for the platform, it's made from cork and it was cut specifically to fit my small space. Around the edges it is sheathed with some sort of transparent plastic rods that prevent the platform from getting damaged. I am not really sure about it all either, my dad made everything it works wonders!

i play the kd9 at church - despite not being all that inspiring to look at, it does its job well and has a good, solid feel to it. the other drummer is very heavy-footed and it's survived him for years. it has never moved on me. the velcro underneath is nigh immovable with the carpeting on the platform unless you release it from a certain angle. if space, noise, and portability are top priority, the kt10 seems ideal. aesthetically, i prefer the kt140 over just about anything (even big phony full-size bass drums). but the price makes it hard to justify, when other triggers perform just as well and the sound is produced by the module lol

I play the KD-8, KD-9, KD-10 and KD-140 weekly. The KD-140 is in a class by its self, rock sold. The others are fairly comparable in my opinion. I like the KD-10 the best, it just feels better, but the KD-8 has stood the test of time. Been playing mine for about 12 years now, never had a problem. Nice video Justin. Happy New Year!!!

blitz7079 Been seriously contemplating replacing my acoustic kick drum by a KD140. Is there any reason more touring drummers don’t do this? The sound and feel seem amazing, the footprint is a lot smaller, and you can simply plug into the soundboard. I get that you need to be able to EQ the bass drum to all the acoustic pieces, but on the surface it seems like the pros outweigh the cons. Opinion?

@@industrialpulse Touring drummers need the stage presence a real kick drum offers. I really think it's an aesthetics preference for them in addition to the other reasons you mentioned.

Hi, I'm not a drummer, I'm a producer and guitar teacher. On my music school I have a cheep millennium e-drum kit for classes (not me teaching obviously) and drum midi programming. I've noticed that when using double drum pedal if I don't lift my foot right away and the other beater gets to the head before the previous one lifts, the pad does not trigger. Is this normal? I know very well that good technique is lifting the pedal but, like I said, I'm not a drummer and I'm just trying to program drums. I don't even play the drum part. I program kick and snare, than cymbals, then breaks, etc...

Can someone help me with this question? I've got a TD-1 as a present from my brother, he just wanted to make me happy and he did not know what to buy. I had a plan to buy a proper pedal, e.g. KD-10 and DW5000 pedal, but I don't know if it is compatible or ist going to work.

Is KD 180L's sensor is the same with KD 10? I found KD 10's beater area so hard and rigid so I am wondering if KD 180L's feel is same with KD10.

Advice, anyone? I am giving away my old TD-8 Vdrums to my buddy’s son. Should I give him the old KD-80 kick, OR the still boxed and new KD-9 kick that came with my new unboxed TD-25KV kit? I want to keep the better kick drum and value all input here. Thanks Justin and Co.

Hey. I have the Roland TD4 KP... The kick pad is beginning to fail to pick up every hit and dynamic.. it’s almost like it’s clipping. I can see a small dent I believe from using a hard plastic beater. Is there a replacement pad available somewhere? Or perhaps a similar model? Thank you

I was going to buy a KVX but I already have a good acoustic bass drum, and buying a KV with the A22 will work out £530 ($740) cheaper... Noise isn’t an issue for me, but is the KD-220 honestly worth it for its “special shell that reduces resonance” or will I get an awesome TD-50 experience by converting my acoustic bass drum?

@AlainHubert

I had a Roland TD-7E back in 1994 and played on it for a couple of years. But when I bought my first house, I sold it to buy a real drum kit (the one you see on my channel). Then I realized that even though I thought the TD-7E sounded good, it certainly didn't measure up to a well tuned, well recorded, real drum kit. Mostly because of the limited sensor technology of the day, mesh pads are evidently better than hard rubber ones, but also, and more importantly, because of the drum samples which sounded static and repetitive. A real drum will NEVER sound the same twice. But even today, expensive Roland drum modules are very limited in dynamics, number of samples per instrument, and still exhibit the undesirable machine-gun effect because the module is replaying the same sound sample over and over. Especially noticeable on rolls, or double kick action. Some good drum softwares are indeed careful to avoid this by including clever multi-sample, random rotation playback, but Roland has yet to catch on with their modules. I don't know why, because they already do it for their digital, sample based pianos, where the same note will never play the same sample twice in a row. So why not for their electronic drum modules ? Who knows...
