Up next an exclusive interview with a cofounding member of the classic 70s and 80s group Little River Band. Graeham Goble who wrote and arranged the most played song in American history by an Australian band or artist…Reminiscing. The song went to #3 in the billboard charts in 1978. Since then it’s been played almost 6 million times on radio. There’ve been a lot of great australian artists over the years…right? AC/DC, INXS, Nick Cave, The Church, Olivia Newton John, Rick Springfield... and on and on and Little River Band or LRB as many know them by have the top song ever by an Aussie and the song almost got thrown out.. They couldn’t get the arrangement to work and were about to move on after trying to record it 2 separate times … Goble talked them into trying it just one more time and someone that wasn’t even in the band is the one who figure out how to make it work… also Beatle John Lennon said it was one of his favorite songs…. The story is next on professor of rock.

It’s time for another edition of our series Revelations. Where artists and bands take us for a deep dive into their greatest songs and albums.. Details about the recordings that you won’t find ANYWHERE else and that’s a fact. Today was have the story the most played song in radio history by an Australian ARTISTS. I MENTIONED some of the great artist from down under but I left one out. It’s a band that has had a lot of hits here in the states and are definitely the greatest Australian Yacht rock group. I’m talking about Little River Band and the classic 1978 classic hit Reminiscing. We have the co-founder, writer and guitarist Graham Goble to tell us how he created it.
It was awarded the BMI award for 5 million plays and is now almost at 6 million plays. The song went to #3 on the hot 100 and was actually named by John Lennon as one of his favorite songs. Graham tells us that the entire song lyrics and music fell out of him in minutes…. he was fantasizing and romanticizing what it would’ve been like to have a relationship with a girl he never got with and having a romance in the 30s when big bands were the rage…the song was created in short order but then almost didn’t get recorded because they couldn’t get the arrangement to work.
Also Graham tells us that after writing this and many other Little River band Classics he and other original band members like singer Glenn Shorrock and Beeb Birtles haven’t been able to tour under the name because the band who uses the name currently who doesn’t have any original members controls it. How would you like to wake up one morning and see that everything you’d ever worked for and created was controlled by someone else. Get the full story next in our exclusive interview with Graham...

My wife and I have an unforgettable memory of a 2005 house party we hosted when all but a dozen or so folks had left...1-2am...my best friend put Reminiscing on the stereo...everyone chilled, solidly drunk, probably high & happy...WE ALL sang the song together as a unit smiling at each other as we sang, aware that it was a special moment. Pure bonding of friends and human spirit over music...this song obviously had touched all our lives up to that exact moment. That's what a great song can do! Cheers, LRB!

Love Little River Band. I always felt they were very underrated and never got the overall credit and recognition they deserved. One of my favorite bands that would be categorized as yacht rock. I remember, during the late 70's and early 80's, they had a string of hit songs played all over top 40 radio. My favorite songs from them are "Reminiscing" (Today's featured song although I didn't know it's the most played song in radio history), "Help Is On Its Way", and "Lonesome Loser". Great band.

This, 10cc's "I'm Not in Love," and Ace's "How Long" are three songs I remember hearing on the radio from my earliest times having my own radio in my childhood bedroom. And the reason those three stand out is because this was like 1986, and I was convinced all of them were current hits based on how good they were and how they more or less fit in with the adult contemporary side of the radio even then.

In the 70s and 80s, Aussie bands were playing for a relatively small market and had to “sell” their songs live to a pretty brutal rock pub audience. It wasn’t the place for the shy or those who preferred the studio. You can hear in a lot of bands a “live” sound, from the Easybeats to AC/DC to INXS to 90s/noughties bands like Spiderbait, Regurgitator, The Grates and Powderfinger. I don’t know much about LRBs history live but I bet they were good.

Adam, I am truly moved by this salute to Graeham Gobles masterpiece. I was among the very fortunate youths who were first to own this album, in 1978 was emblazoned in my soul. The meticulousness of these band mates that created a genre of it’s own, I worked in radio that very same year in my first job. And it stuck. Funny how all these years later, the music of our generation was relevant and truly mattered.

What a beautiful song. It came out when I was young and although I really didn't understand the song's meaning, I did understand that people liked to remember their past. My mom and grandmother were always talking about the past (the good memories anyway - there was some bad too). When I got older, the lyrics meant a lot more to me. Now that my husband has passed away, I can relate to this song more than ever.

Great segment about a classic. As a 5 year-old in 1978, this was such a smooth and buttery sound all the way through, from the vocals, to the bass, to the strings and harmonies. It was ear candy like nothing else that year, which is saying something as 1978 was the year of the Bee Gees. Also, I still think that Mike Rutherford was influenced by those great rhythm chords when Genesis wrote "Throwing it All Away". There's definitely a bit of a nod to Reminiscing there, to my ears. Thanks, Dave
