This is a list of all the walls, both visible and invisible, that id has added to Doom Eternal since the release of the game. Most of these effect speedruns, and many of them can still be skipped anyways, it's just slightly harder to skip them.
This is mostly for posterity's sake, in case people ask what changes have been added or why we downpatch (these are not all the reasons, but many of them).

I think they added a wall in Super Gore Nest, on the buff totem section. Before you could meathook the Revenant and go straight to the platforming section, skipping the entire fight.

@@MetaSpeedruns It's pretty upsetting to see it happen with Doom Eternal where it's obvious the devs want you to play the game the "right" way. The same thing happened with Hollow Knight where Team Cherry donated a ton during GDQ for the glitchless category, but the following year for the any% run they didn't show up at all, then patched out every glitch that was showcased about two weeks later.

I think pretty much all invisible walls are bullshit, if you really want to block off an area, use something people can see. I get *unreasonably* angry when I am stopped by a stupid invisible wall.

More importantly wtf is the point of patching these jumps? Like the average player does not give a shit about this as they’ll focus on the game but speed runners seriously wouldn’t complain about certain skips and want them patched?

This would be the equivalent of id putting invisible blocks inside the Chasm level in Doom 2 so people would be forced to go across those shitty, tight pathways.

That is a pity, one of the coolest part of the Halo series was knowing the layout of a level and finding cool ways to get past them in following playthroughs if you wanted. Doom: Eternal had some of those moments(sadly even at launch there was a stupid invisible wall on cultist base blocking a traversal shortcut clearly visible), but is now losing that charm...

@@crassiewassie8354 enhanced mobility shouldn't make you fly accross the universe tho. Btw those fixes are pointless because many of the skips they tried to patch only effect any% speed runners but any% speed runners play on old patches to get all the glitches in the first place.

They don't know how to fix the causes of the "problem", which is the movement glitches (mostly related to FPS, I imagine), so they "fix" walls and skyboxes

My guess would be that it has something to do with the same mindset that made the max ammo so much lower; it pushes the player to play the way the devs want you to. Hear me out: In Doom(16) you could play in a bunch of different ways. Sure, there were "better" ways and "worse" ways, "easier" and "harder" ways, but there were still a lot of options. You could play the entire game with just the shotgun if you wanted to. You didnt have to, but you could. In Eternal, on the other hand, unless you are playing on the lowest difficulty and have cheats on, you can't. You pretty much have to play the game in a specific way, or in a close variant of it. You are forced by the sheer lack of ammo to switch weapons, use the chainsaw on the lower enemies at specific times, and so on. Whether or not you think that is the "optimal" or "best" way to play isnt really relevant, it takes player choice away. Extend this to level design: there are hundreds of examples of completely unnecessary invisible walls to block any way to progress except the way the devs decided was the "right" and therefore "only" way. It removes player choice for the sake of being what a small subset of the community would consider to be the "best" way.

Invisible walls were added to out of map spots near the middle of the Doom Hunter Base mission. They were added with the release of TAG2.

On one hand I can see the point of view that you shouldn't be able to cheese an ultra nightmare run, as that's an accomplishment you should earn; but on the other hand this feels obtrusive and unnecessary outside of that context. Most players aren't impacted at all by these changes, and only annoy speedrunners who like skips. Ultimately I wish games would have a sort of "speedrun" mode, where exploits are kept in, and even have separate unlocks for it. I know you can downpatch, but it would ve cool if there was ingame support for launching in previous versions, similar to Minecraft

I would love that sort of thing. Especially when people talk about invasion mode, just have invasion mode be opt in, and when you do, THEN just box every arena in with invisible walls.

@@BloodShot9001 with Hugo talking about how having diferent spawns for each difficulty is extremely complicated to add for the engine, along side other comments about engine limitations, makes me think that working in a suggestion like yours much more complicated than you make it sound, of course neither of us would know how complicated would actually be, but i assume changing the location of invisible walls with a setting would be fairly complicated right? Especially since it's changing the entire map

On one hand, Master Levels are able to do that, ala Super Gore Nest, as it actually has less walls than base Super Gore Nest, but also a few more added ones with different triggers. On the other hand... Super Gore Nest ML was a mess on launch. I will fully admit, game dev is hard and none of us know anything about what id's going through. A lot of the ideas/suggestions are with the caveat of "if they could work it in," but even if not I'd rather them say it'd take too much development time for such a small portion of the playerbase.

@@gueton5200 unfortunately that's just how they roll, apparently. They've added extra waves to fights before without saying anything (Doom Hunter Base after the "train ride"), and they made Unmaykr no longer work with Overdrive (might have been a bug, but from launch until half-way through TAG1's life cycle?) without uttering anything. It's just so inane and disheartening. :T At the end of the day they don't owe us anything I'll admit, but it'd still be nice to at least get some cohesive patch notes.

Man that 2nd to last one triggered the shit outta me the other day, from the map it's the most obvious route to take, the height of the platforms are perfect to jump up to, but instead it's just a "nah screw you" FFS THAT'S WHAT WALLS ARE FOR! Unless there is a reasonable explanation as to why you can't go somewhere you might as well have floating text boxes saying "Because I said so and I'm in charge, how dare you question my authority!"

I'm not actually sure which one we're referring about? I know they changed how the physics on sloped surfaces work, so certain dash boosts won't work, but every skip on DHB should still work I believe (maybe not 100% skips?).

I feel like it would have been easier just to add something map friendly to a lot of these to make them better, for example, actually making that pillar taller so it could not be accessed and adding toxic floors to places if you get there early. I think invis walls are cheap and break a lot of immersion, even while speed running.

So it's not the weapon wheel itself. What I'm doing is falling off a ledge and using the slow-mo from weapon wheel to do so. You'll see my "fall" but then I won't keep falling, only slightly. What this does is it puts me at a lower height than the ledge I'm falling off of while still staying there. Then I dash into it. This gives a dash boost, but in particular it gives a very high dash boost.

Do developers have some sort of grudge against speed runners? I don't get it. There's no reason to add these walls. I mean, they do realize that people play the game normally soooo much before they start speed running; Right? It's not like "people are casually skipping things we worked for for a long time" because people go through the game normally frequently enough to learn these afterwards. This anti-speedrunner things do nothing but reduce the game's life span for some people. Edit: seems like it could be a preparation for the upcoming invasion mode. Edit2: Hugo said he didn't know, and it must be for performance reasons. He also said he loves the speedrunners.

I'd say it's very poor design choice. I play casually and constantly encounter invisible walls which not only is frustrating, but it also breaks immersion. If you give all these movement options and want to encourage exploration of level through secret, invisible walls are the very last thing you want to add. Invisible walls are like a bad DRM: Nuisance to those who just want to play the game but circumventable to those who want to get around them.

That's definitely the thought process. We've just never heard any news about it in patch notes or anything, they just do these changes and we have to figure them all out.

I dont get what was their point with these. While its true it cheapens the game. Once its discovered it should just be kept as part of it. The whole "lets change the campaign post launch" doesnt benefit anyone. It will mess with invasion, but why not just have those walls in invasion.

It's probably for invasion mode so demons with flight ability that get dropped in don't exploit spots the slayer can't normally reach.

I get why invisible walls exist and why people would want them, especially for this game, but it honestly is all overkill nowadays. It's like the devs don't want you to explore anything. There's no cool spots or gimmicks that other people might not learn, it's all being linearized as a this plug and chug formula so that every player has a similar experience in the game, they're trying to average everything out and remove negative outliers in gaming. The biggest threat with digital downloads will be them retroactively patching games that have been out for years.

Personally, I've never had any problem with most of these walls because i play on x box 1, so i can't get over 60 fps (btw 30 fps look a exactly like 60)

You can still definitely do most of these skips in different ways even at 60 fps. For instance, the Rocket Launcher arena in particular you can do a punch boost off the Mancubus closest to the start (with weapon wheel if you need just that much extra speed). And in the case of the TAG1 walls, those don't require high fps at all.

Long story short no. Slope Boosts got patched out after version 1.1. What I'm doing with the weapon wheel is slowing down time to line myself up, and "fall off" of a ledge while still being close enough not to fall too far. This lets me get a dash boost off of squared off surfaces/ledges.

not sure why they added things that only speedrunners would use. These fixes only make sense if people would accidentally skip fights or soft lock

I know people are uoset with this but think about invasion mode. If the slayer can do this kind of things demons wouldnt stand a chance. If you played dark souls and found an invader or a host abuse an exploit in the levels you will see how annoying it is.

The issue is when there's other exploits that would be far worse for said invaders. Stuff like the Invulnerability Glitch, which has been in since TAG1, are still a thing. And again, I don't mind if they're prepping for Invasion, it makes the most sense given the context, I just wish they'd say "Removed so and so skip/patched so and so wall for Invasion prep".

Really? That used to spice up the fight on Exultia and helped me out a bunch of times. Now we can’t even use some parts of the level (not to skip mind you, but for better combat.) Seriously? That kills the whole vibe of being Doomguy. Just why?

I will never understand devs adding anti-speedrun tricks into levels. It's just denying people fun in their own way, fun that only a small percentage of the playerbase will be able to have anyway since speedrunning requires some skill and knowledge of the exploits, and it's not like skipping sections will hurt the experience or the devs, players already bought the game, it's already paid for, I mean, do they really think that players will refund the game for having fun that wasn't intended by the creators? this is just like punishing people for creativity and telling them to only have fun in the way the devs intended, which for me personally is not good, or even necessary

Invisible walls are minor problems. This game is going downhill especially with latest dlc and bullshit changes to dlc1 and main game.

@@SquerolBoss most of the changes are going to be reverted, and i have not noticed any changes to the main game unless you mean the demon nerfs,of which have already been addressed as bugs in case of the marauder, or will be reverted/partially reverted for certain dificulties if possible in case of the arachnotron

this is so stupid. speedrunners are such a tiny tiny percentage of the player base, and yet they do a massive amount towards keeping people engaged and interested in the game and the franchise. putting in little obstacles to make runs more difficult in patches is just utterly asinine. There is a video out there of hugo and the devs watching a speedrun shortly after launch and you can tell how upset they are. they even talk about ways to stop speedrunners. are they insane? they should watch the no-major glitch runs if they want to be impressed and not complain about the runs. im not a huge fan of any wall clipping or out if bounds runs, but stuff like this? come on devs.

I see no sense in these changes. A casual player will never ever be impacted by these because they wouldn't use skips like that on their first run anyways. It only fucks with all the speedrun routes and recorded times on previous patches, screwing people that spent hundreds and hundreds of hours perfecting a run.

Yeah, that's fine, but why haven't they ever put anything in patch notes explaining this? That's the point I want to get across, that they don't explain these things and leave the players guessing. It's like with Overdrive no longer working with Unmaykr, they just changed it after 6+ months if it being a thing, and people weren't sure if it was a bug it got changed, or if it was always a bug in the first place, because they never mentioned anything in patch notes.

Invasion mode doesn't exist. This is purely for dicking over speedrunners. If these walls only existed at the same time invasion mode finally appeared, you'd have an arguement. But 1.2? Nope, that's purely a "screw speedrunners" move.
