I"ve kept Platies for years. Alone, in communities, and some breeding projects I've since stopped. RIght now I'm down to a single 180, with Angels and BN cats. THe Angels keep the population in check, and the 100 or so Platies are happy as clams, playing all day in the heavy plant cover. 78-79F, pH around 7.4, and typical CHicago liquid rock (GH/KH 15+).

I love my Platys and all the variety they offer. I currently have 4 females in a community 29 gallon ( with H. Rasboras, a dwarf flame gourami, 2 Synotontis Petricola cats, and some Otos). Each time I brought a new Platy home they popped out a few baby fry unexpectedly. This last time my grandaughter (eagle eye) saw just one little lone fry. We were able to catch it. And after two weeks in the breeder net it is growing up in a 10 gallon until I know it will be safe to go back in the 29 gallon. We named it Lucky Speckles:) Nice video as always

Love my platies! I’ve found them to be much hardier than guppies as a beginner fish (unless you’re really paying attention to getting high quality stock) and just as colorful. Those neon greens are so pretty, haven’t seen those before! I’ve found that the more plants I have in the tank the more peaceful it is as chasing behavior is really minimized with plenty of cover. Mine have done really well with amano shrimp (which are as big as they are so no surprise), but couldn’t stop picking at my mystery snails. I think they’re just curious and like to mouth things, but the snails started hiding all the time and I had to move them to another tank.

Things I learned while keeping Platies: 1. Males will chase desired female, but will bully the other females whom he doesn't like. 2. They will eat their young if you don't provide hiding places. 3. They are heavy eaters and are prone to have swim bladder issues, in which they are unable to swim normally, so they might struggle to do so. 4. They reproduce prolifically. You might have a tank of 30 - 40 fry within a couple of months. 5. They are easy going and social, so they need similar platy buddies. They will get along with almost any community fish.

@@Rancid_Ninja oh yeah, I probably wouldn't want them breeding wildly in that tank anyway tbh, especially since you're not able to set up another tank at the moment. It'd get crowded quick. In a bigger tank they'll be more likely to find space away from their parents, so if you're ever in a position to upgrade, just provide lots of cover(I like live plants), and watch your population explode. Haha

Thank you guys for this video! I agree, you don't hear much about Platy's, and they do have a great personality. I wish I would have know earlier to get more females to my one male because he did chase her around quite often. I spoiled her, if that's a thing. I brought her back from a terrible pregnancy and death spiral, sent her to a "Lil get-away" where she could have a break from her mate and just relax. She did end up having 9 babies before she sadly passed. The fry are about 4 weeks now and they are all doing well. I like to turn an air stone on for 2-3 minutes and watch most of them "play" in the current. But I agree, they are a great beginner fish with loads of personality. Thank you guys for the video!

It's a 20 gallon tall, very well planted, with lots of hiding places. 6 months I had just 4 Cherry Shrimp and now I have about 50!!!!!!! I also have lots of baby Platies that survive so I rehome them to other fish keepers in my area. Love the video! I have a number of platies in my 20L that's scaped like Yoda's Swamp in Empire Strikes Back. It's a striking tank and one of my favorites - one of the cats' favorites too. Lots of plants, and there are kuhli loaches and hillstream loaches in there to provide an "alien" look, as well as an assortment of snails. I had a powder blue gourami but s/he wasn't playing nice so I moved it to a different tank. What I love about my platy tank is they can just breed and breed and breed and then I can scoop a bunch out, bag 'em, and take them down to my LFS for store credit! I don't know if there's a way to show a pic but I have a ton of pics of the cats watching this tank like a TV!

I have a male Betta that lives in my platy tank. He actually loves swimming around with all the platys and has never tried to hurt them. He will flair a little of any of them if they are getting a bit to chummy, but otherwise he will follow them all over the tank a they will do the same. Hasn't messed around with any of the fry either, at least not that I have noticed so far. He is actually more curious of my pleco in the tank because it moves around in such a funky manor. But all he ever does is just sit there and watch the pleco get up to its antics. Personally I think it's a form of entertainment to him. But for other people I would keep an eye on the Betta in your tank to make sure it's not picking on or getting picked on by other fish. I am really lucky with mine because he was a grocery store rescue from a cup. He has some permanent fin damage from his time at the store but it hasn't slowed him down and he has such a laid back personality. I do agree that my Blue Mickey Mouse Platys are very easy to take care of. Feed them every other day. And within the month I got them they have breed many little fish that are now all over my tank. I will say that having a medium planted tank has been a nice thing because it gives the fish and the fry areas to stake out territories and breaks up lines of site so no one fish is being hassled by any other fish. Though the aggression level in my tank is nothing because all the fish are super chill.

A word of caution regarding what you said about Tetras with Platies. I put about 6 Glow tetra's in my Platty / Guppy 29 gallon tank, they are beautiful to look at and live VERY long (going on 2 years plus now), BUT I have not had much in the form of breeding in the time I've had them. Glow tetra's gobble EVERY fry they can, so if you like breeding fish keep glow tetra's out of the tank. I'm presently down to three Glow tetra's and am sadly anxious for their demise. LONG LIVE BREEDING!!!

Platies have always been my favorite of what I always grew up seeing being called "tropical" fish in my local pet stores, etc. I like sword tails as well but found them to be a little bit nippy so when I stand up my next tank I think it's just going to be Platies, a few cory cats, a pleco. Maayyyyybe a Betta but I'm not sure. I really love "American" cichlids and over the years i've grown incredibly fond of Oscars and even Convicts but they're just a little bit bigger than I want for my next tank. It's tough not to go back to the incredibly personality filled Oscars, though lol. First video i've watched on your channel. I'm going to be binge watching quite a bit.

My tap water pH is about 7.3 but I have fluval stratum as my new substrate so it’s dropped to a little below 7 now (hoping it evens out to neutral soon). My average tank temperature is 77 F. I have what used to be a 40 gallon (13 inch tall, 40 inches long, and 27 inches wide)“retirement tank” for an old (not sure the age but at least over ten the guy who I got it from had it at least that long) rescue ropefish that was badly stunted (I could tell by looking at the face) at 9.5 inches. But since the fish passed away (2 years and 3 months in for me it just stopped eating and sat at the bottom of the tank like old bettas do) I’m left with an elderly 2 yr old mystery snail and a 7 month nerite snail in this planted tank. I’ve gotten mixed results on how the fish react or don’t to snails would an all female school of 4-5 platties bother the snails? Should I just go with an all (5) fancy guppy female school instead? Or should I try another kind of fish entirely?

Platys and guppies are both fine with snails. They more or less ignore them. Have fun!

Hello, Thank you so much for this video. I am new to Fish pets. Unfortunately, when you go to a chain pet shop, you don’t get the proper guidance . I just recently 4 plates 2 Blue/ Orange and White/Orange. They are beautiful and good so far, but now I am worried because no body told me it was good to keep Gold fish and plagies together. I have a 30 Gallon fish tank two small fantail goldfish and my 4 plates. I put natural plants and wood 🪵 too. I have the air pump too. I do water changes every 2 weeks. Hopefully they continue with a good health. So far everything is peaceful. Thank you so much. I wish could have seen this video before. 😭😭😭😭😭

How many can I start off with in a 125 gallon aquarium and what kinda filter would you recommend I personally like to use sponge filters

You could easily add 30 in a 125, but it might be more fun to add maybe 3 males and 10 females and let them breed? If it were my tank I would probably run two tidal 75s.

Hello! I had 15 baby corys in a separate floating container and there are only two left. Due to the other babies passings I tested the water and it is max hardness. I never thought about hardness bc the adults are fine. Any tips for softening the water?

The safest way to do it is using RO water and then remineralizing it.

I bought 3 platys (1 male, 2 females) recently and within 5 days I've found around 6-8 baby's I'm guessing the rest were unfortunately consumed by them but the baby's love hanging around my false julli corys tho they get scared when they move so suddenly and get really active

Can platies handle alot of water movement? I have a 125g with two fx4s. Three of the four nozzles are pointed at the surface though so that kinda dissipates the flow. Just wondering if you think that's too much. They dont seem to be bothered by it or at least none of them have complained yet. Lol. Thoughts?

They are fairly active, but not the best for a high flow tank.

My males are extremely territorial. I just didn't expect that at all. I've bred guppies for 7 years, I had different color breeding projects but decided to level up and try something a step up. I have no idea! Mine were so territorial that I had to move the boys to a different tank. They do well with the swordtails. Bith are in only same sex tanks

Is this the crypts only tank Joanne did recently? I'm hoping to have a platy tank in a 10 gallon. I know you don't recommend it, but if you had no choice, would you max it at 3 or 5? I was considering all males. I was planning on variates because the water will be around 71 degrees.

I just got a 6.7 gallon tank with two male platys. I let the tank cycle for two days before I bought my fish and they're both doing fine it would seem. Im feeding them tetra tropical flakes (which I sort of grind down in my hand before putting in because the flakes are HUGE), and I have added water conditioner for two days. Should I add more conditioner, since this was tap water? Would it be wise to add one or two more platys to the tank? All I have inside is a plastic rock tower for a hide and a lot of plastic plants. Should I look into something better? This is for college and I can't have anything above a 10 gallon tank, and I've already invested $130 into my current set up. What can I do to improve things? Thanks for your help!! - Viri

I probably wouldn’t add anything more. It might also be useful to add Fritzyme 7 to avoid the ammonia and nitrite spikes that usually happen about a week or so after adding fish to a new tank. Good luck!

it's terrible how i went to LFS that i frequent and asked them the name of the neon green wag platy that i liked ( i did not know it's name at the time). They had a tank of "assorted Plattys" they literally had no clue what the name of it was. I swear we need a "Jason" clone at all fish stores LOL :) thank you for this video, i now know what i have in my tank!! LOL

I Love you guys. Is it Jason and Joanna or Jason and Johanna? A lot of Love here from Sweden. You guys have inspired me a lot, so I am starting up two Tanks right now. Under gravel filters, one with dry start and one with dark start. Both have under gravel filters. I have not been in the hobby for 30 years, but starting up again. I had an under gravel aquarium going for 20 years without water changes. Always perfect water parameters. Only had to top it up once a month because of The water evaporasition. Now it Will be 2 Tanks with under gravel filters, heavily planted, deep substrate. One with Guppies and the other one with Endlers. Always been a Guppy guy. 😘
