I really like the concept of a small evaporative air cooler (aka swamp cooler) and wanted to give this small Arctic Air Pure Chill a try to see if it worked as well as advertised.

I just bought this about 1 month ago. I live in NJ and we have had a few hot nights. I keep it on my nightstand and i love it. I got a good night's sleep and felt refreshed the next day. I wet the filter with cold water and put it in the freezer for about 2 hours before bed. I lined the bottom of the reservoir with ice, and filled it with ice cold water. It served the purpose. It is not meant to cool the entire room just the personal space around you. I would recommend it especially if you are going through menopause. 💯👍🏻👍🏻

Yep, I use it by my beside too. I live in NJ and sometimes it's hot and humid. It cools of my bed just fine. I personally can't stand air conditioning and hence my bedroom is over the garage which central air doesn't really reach. This has been perfect today and the few hot days we had so far.

Okay here's a real informative review I bought one from Walmart for 40. You freeze the filter inside, then pour ice water through the top, it works well when it's blowing on you. I don't recommend sleeping with it blowing on you because when it becomes empty water starts dripping through the vents and its a fire hazard. It does blow cold air good though

I bet it only takes about five minutes to warm the filter up to room temperature and once the ice melts the cooling effect will be reduced quite a bit. Of course, it all depends on the relative humidity and if you are in a humid environment these devices will be no better than a fan.

Optimally evaporative coolers can drop temperatures 30 degrees, and yes it will, only if the outside humidity is very low. While it may seem placing filters in the freezer and using ice cubes in the water might help, it hinders the evaporative process. Evaporative coolers work best when drawing in hot and dry outside air, cooling and humidifying the air and then letting the air escape through slightly opened windows. Even when our outside temperatures are above 116 degrees, upper 80 degree cooled air does provide relief since it provides moisture that's not present in the dry outside air. The key here is that air must be constantly moving from outside to inside and back outside. Also these extreme temperatures here only last a couple weeks a year and the rest of the time it's a lot more comfortable. You must maintain evaporative coolers by replacing pads just before the hottest time of year, and making sure water is distributed to them correctly as a dry pad will admit hot air into your home. The fan bearings need to be oiled twice during the summer season and the water supply float needs to be checked for proper operation as well. The Cedar pads are best and have a nice natural smell to them. The added benefit if you can use them is they cost a lot less to operate and maintain than regular A/C systems. Regarding the little portable coolers, just buy a fan. They don't perform like their marketing claims. When my A/C failed, I put a damp towel on my bare feet and had a small fan blowing on them and I was surprised how comfortable I was. You should try it just to see how well it works just for a test in case your A/C should ever fail. .

My 18 litre machine has a powerful fan and it works very well when the temperature is above about 24°C. The small ones are useless !!! But I don't need to oil any bearings or replace pads. I take the pads out in the winter and wash them off !!!! You need to dismantle the fan to oil the bearings which have lubricant in the Bushes. So you don't need to lubricate the bearings for years !!! You don't lubricate an electric fan bearings very often !!!

It’s way better to have a pure white roof instead to reflect 80 to 90% of sunlight. They say that having a pure white roof that at least reflects 80% of sunlight will stay about 28°C/51°F cooler from inside compared to a dark coloured roof on a summer afternoon.

@@rosskrause3926 @tesscot It would depend on IF you want it for camping or a small room(as weight wouldn't be big issue at home) and just how much temperature differential you want. To get one, AC, made for travel I would start with an online search for "travel mini air conditioning unit"..."with heat" if you want heat, and try camping Air Conditioning. Then you should be able to find brands and sale locations and online ordering. If you want fast find pay and pick up, then your nearest Truck Stop will be number 1 place to go for small "lightish" travel AC. There's Quick Trip, Loves, Flying J, Pilot, etc. to name just a few in my area. Some restaurant chains have taken on placing their restaurants with the stores and fuel pumps that make up a truck stop. In my area I have seen McDonald's, Subway and Wendy's do so. Number 2 place to go next might be sporting goods stores. Evaporative cooling is what this little thing does. Older generations and depending on location in the states would call it a water cooler, or swamp cooler, and there are likely other nicknames. High humidity areas may be harder for one to cool as well. Evaporative cooling works by passing air though a damp medium. As the water evaporates (the towel dries) The warmth in the air is absorbed by the medium/towel so it can help evaporate the water out of the medium. Heat, or heat from a warmer medium will always move to a cooler surface/medium. Just like heat from stove is transferred to the pot with water in it and then from the pot surface to the water, heat moves from air to the wet medium, so air coming out is cooler. That small of a unit would work hard(stay on all day) to keep a well sealed and insulated 10' x 10' room cool. I mean it can do it but a regular water cooler would work so much better at cooling a room. They won't keep as cool as a refrigerated system(AC system) but they are much more efficient because all they are running is a blower motor.

@@rosskrause3926 I know this comment is 2 years old. Answering anyway as other may still be looking. Small TRUE COMPRESSOR type battery powered A/C units can be found easily on amazon, ebay, etc. They cost upwards of $900-1200 and some higher. For any decent run time you also have to buy an "extra" battery and they aren't usually cheap (often starting at several hundred $ and use a proprietary connector which means they can be connected only to the same brand/model and likely won't work on another brand's battery powered A/C). They will run on "eco" mode for about 6 hours with an extra (often lithium) battery connected. *_Additional Research_* Some compressor based portable A/C units use a "one hose" design, and some use a "two hose" design. Two-hose designs are GENERALLY better but not always by any significant amount even when running on house mains voltage. Research "one hose vs. two hose portable AC" on youtube (and variations on that theme) to get an idea of the differences.

Normally an evaporative cooler draws in air from the outside. When you recirculate it, the relative humidity goes up and the cooling effect goes down and it will feel muggy. Evaporative coolers almost don't exist in humid areas. If you have to use ice, your freezer is going to be running more (and heating your home in the process) so it really is a losing game.

Exactly, swamp cooler type cooling works well in the southwest (AZ, NM, etc) because it's hot but very dry... When the outside air is already saturated (humidity) they work poorly, if at all... Which is where regular A/C units work because they remove moisture from the air inside (a dehumidifier is very similar to an A/C).

My sister says hers works pretty decently to cool the room. Every online review I've seen says they are pure junk and don't work at all. Misting stations definitely work in hot humid climates but air movement seems necessary. Big misting fans for outdoor use work great too even with the high humidity and heat. Those big fans have large water tanks or they hook directly to water hoses. Moving air seems imperative. Shade helps too.

It's a swamp cooler -- a very old idea. It evaporates water, which cools the air by removing the latent heat of vaporization of the water from of the air. This is Thermodynamics 101. I doubt very much that it will work very well in places like Birmingham, Alabama, where it approaches 100% humidity, because you can't evaporate water into air that is already saturated with water. However, in dry places like Las Vegas, Nevada, it should work exceedingly well. However, you might want to keep the space you use it in pretty well ventilated, or else you could create a mildew problem when all of that evaporated water starts condensing out on the cooler surfaces of the room.

@@davemerrick8432 Try cold-ish water instead of ice water if you want to cool down for longer periods. Drinking ice cold water only alarms the body to heat up, because you're drastically undercooling your inner body. The near east has been doing this for an eternity, like lukewarm tea for example. The trick or rather idea is to ingest liquid that will cool the body, but not enough to trigger it. Drinking something ice cold does feel good though, but I've been getting used to something between lukewarm and cold for almost like two decades and once you're fine with it and you get over the part where your brain thinks drinking ice cold water is better, you'll notice how much longer the cooling effect lasts and how you won't get those super-heat moments where your body gets this small rush of heat. Of course, it's important to keep hydrating to keep that effect, but it's not like you'd stop hydrating anyway.

Not for whole house or whole room cooling but handy as personal cooler and can be life saving if the house a/c goes out until fixed/replaced and helpful for those with hot flashes. Works much better in dry/low humidity desert regions. Clogs up easily especially if have hard water and not easy to reach the drip hole or to find something small enough but stiff enough to unclog it (earlier models before the Pure Chill model)-- so if have hard water best to stick to using distilled water. Basically it has equivalent of a computer case type fan. NEVER leave water in it sitting and stagnating -- health risk!

People in the Mojave Desert in California and throughout the Southwest are very familiar with this method, except our Evaporative Coolers are mounted on the roof and pump 3-5,000 cubic feet of air per minute through the house. You might pay $4-600 for the cooler but it's well over 100 degrees outside and in the 70-degree range in the house. You simply turn it on, it takes the hot, dry air from outside, pumps it into the house. You open some windows here and there to let that 3-5000 cubic feet of air back outside again. The thing I like about "swamp coolers" is how healthy your skin becomes in the summer months. No dry, scratchy elbows and knees, etc. We look at this demonstration as a simple downsized copy of the big coolers, made in some third-world country for pennies on the dollar. Swamp coolers don't work where it's humid, you're just adding to the problem. They work in hot, dry places only. The electric bill is not crazy. You're paying for a blower fan and a little water pump. With this silly thing you're paying "moocho" dollars for a little plastic toy.

I have one, have used it about a year in the hottest part of the summer. This does work, the trick is to make sure to keep the water as cold as possible in the top pan. Adding ice constantly really helps. Just make sure that you don't over fill it. As the air conditioner runs, the water level will drop -- just keep adding ice and ice cold water. These are good for small rooms or for a small space directly where you are sitting. This wouldn't cool a huge room, but it will cool the general area where you are.

Yes I have one of these and it does help keep me cool on the hot days here in Southern California. Fortunately the humidity is very low when it's hot. There's a reason they are called swamp coolers. The only time I have ever seen one do any good was when I was a kid and my folks had one that attached to the passenger window of our car. We were on a trip to Nevada and inland Southern California in summer, where the extra humidity wasn't unwelcome. If you use one in a house in addition to a conventional air conditioner it just makes the air conditioner work harder and waste energy removing the extra humidity you are adding.

Dont know if i would want this product for the fact it is a bit noisy but i do believe it what you say it does. I have a sunbeam early 2000s model and says it has a fan and low and high heating fans and its small about the same as the arctic chill not as rectangular in length but it does heat up my room like in 5 to 10 mins. And it gets hot after that. I bring it to the dinning room for my dad and it heats it up about the same. So yeah its amazing how something that small can work that good but the fan part not too impressed doesnt give out air or nothing.

The thing to remember is that you cannot cool air without displacing heat. If there is nowhere for heat to go, then the air will not be cooler. This unit will cool the air IF you put the filter in the freezer first. The frozen filter will absorb the heat and blow cool air, until the ice has melted. That is the only way this will cool any air, and even so, it'll only last a very short period.

I haven't used actual air conditioning for a few years now, so Arctic Air has saved me tons of money! evap coolers or swamp coolers work great in dry climates. So in Montana or Wyoming it will work better, you can even improve it further by increasing evaporation with a dehydrator, or keeping windows and doors open to keep dry air moving. It's a tricky game to play but once you figure it out it works pretty well and is way cheaper to run than an AC.

I keep those in my frig cooler .. the lights are an issue so I took small pieces of tape to cover up the light which is why I didn’t get one of these kind because the whole top is a light. .. but for car camping this worked great. .. I did not expect it to cool much but what was very surprising is that the fan is less powerful than the tiniest handheld fan you would see at the dollar store. The noise is pretty steady so it doesn't bother me. I haven't used ice yet and it seems pretty cold with water, and I think I save on the charge by not using the water feature. also i wanted to point out that these devices are not all that similar to swamp cooler systems- these things nebulize the water into the air flow while swamp coolers use capillary media to bring moisture into contact with the air flow- a big difference especially regarding how much moisture is added to the air. if these things were sized similarly to a commercial cooling unit they would put out FAR more humidity....our system at the car dealer where i worked had a diverter door and it could bring outside air in or recirculate on drier or hotter days.

I have the Arctic Air 2.0, which I'm very happy with. I saw this newer model in a shop and presumed (wrongly) that it would be at least as good and probably better. With the Arctic Air 2.0, the water in the tank (presumably) gradually drips down onto the filter resulting in evaporation while the unit is on, thus keeping the air coming from it cool. With the newer model, the water level in the tank remained the same as it was when I first filled it after having it on for a while. I pre-soaked the filter beforehand but because the water in the tank wasn't keeping the filter wet to cause evaporation, it wasn't producing cool air. Edit 03-Dec-2023: Correction - I remember now that the Artic Air 2.0 produced a very fine mist, which kept the filter wet and thus providing cool air, along with gradually emptying the water tank. I only added this because I've only just seen the nonsensical reply below, but the correction has nothing to do with that.

Doesn't really help with cooling down a fairly small room but it is pumping out 19°C while the room temperature is 24°C. It's using like 1.5W which is almost nothing, I was literally running it off a powerbank as it uses 5V. It's really good for blowing cold air directly into you, but wouldn't use it to replace an actual AC. Though considering I live alone and I spend most of my time at home at my PC, it *will* replace my AC except when I'm cooking in the kitchen~

Was in west Texas once where i visited a repair facility that had eight large evaporative coolers that carried outside air through a medium with water running through it, and into the building, cooling a large workspace. It was much cooler inside there. The humidity in West Texas is generally very low and that is the reason this concept works there. In Denver I visited an office where they had purchased a cooler that was recirculating water and operating like the swamp coolers described above but did not bring in outside air. The results were it would cool briefly but soon it would raise the humidity in the room to the point where it was still hot but now very humid and muggy also. The fact is these things will cool some but only in humidity levels under 70%. The lower the humidity the better they work.

Frozen water bottles are the way to do recirculating coolers. I have about a third of my freezer filled with water bottles (it also helps the freezer efficiency if you don't stock a full freezer of food). I find that eight to twelve 12oz (350ml) water bottles freeze in my freezer about half as quickly as they melt in front of a summer fan. (And I put them under a light blanket with me while I sleep, too.) But the critical limit is the efficiency of my freezer. If you used a hundred bottles at a time, you could cool a room in no time. But the time to refreeze those bottles lets the heat spike again long before you can continue to cool. So I have twenty four bottles frozen and switch out only eight or twelve of them at a time, depending how hot it is. One liter of ice, melting from -10c to +10c requires about 400 Kj of heat. It depends on the size of your room and how hot it is, but my room is only 27m² and it will cool about 4 or 5 °c in the first hour, and no more than another degree every half hour or so until maybe +15°c, where it struggles to cool further and only maintains the temp.

I didn't have an A/C, so I tried to figure it out. I tried all those gadgets from videos, but those only work to keep a cool breeze on you.
