When I was young growing up in Boston, I used to listen to this song and all of Allan Sherman's albums with my parents and my brother. Years later, I moved to New York and ended up moving with my wife to Ocean Parkway in Brooklyn where we had and raised our two sons -- that was over thirty years ago -- and we're still in Brooklyn, within walking distance of Ocean Parkway.

That certainly explains why there are so many little-seen photos in here! Bought the book a few years ago and started it, but am still getting used to using reading glasses and therefore unfortunately put down a lot of books when I don't have them on me. I love to know everything I can about this talented but deeply troubled man who meant so much to our family.

I grew up in West Roxbury, a suburb of Boston, listening to this album with my parents. Who knew that twenty years later I'd be living with my wife and two kids in an apartment -- on Ocean Parkway in Brooklyn, the same street that Sherman talked about coming home to in this song. I remember coming home to our apartment on that very street for years. In fact, over twenty years later, we're still in Brooklyn within a ten minute's walk of Ocean Parkway and that same neighborhood he sang about...

II remember Allan Sherman songs growing up and anybody that grew up in Brooklyn or the Bronx and is over 50 identifies with the Working Class Middle Class Images that these songs conjure up! They were a special time and the people had a special Chemistry and how I wish I could talk with some of the people that were part of that culture. Anytime I meet a "throwback of that culture I want to hug them and thank them!!!" I grew up on Ocean Ave and Ave H in Brooklyn. Believe it or not there are still some throwback Allan Sherman types that live in Brooklyn, especially at the South End of Ocean Parkway near Coney Island. Great People ! I am Italian American so I can definitely identify with the culture, It is very similar. These people that Sherman sings about are the "Salt of the Earth" People!! Successful Christians and Catholics get it. Those that want to be prejudice against them will pay the price Thats just a Fact- Ive witnessed it. Love Thy Brothers. Thanks you Allan.

Recognized as a true contemporary wit in 1962, Sherman displayed a genius for lyrics and cultural humor. He knocked out three very funny albums with the support of Harpo Marx and his son, Bill Marx. By the time Pres. Kennedy was murdered in the streets of Dallas, Americans were done with Sherman's levity. Sadly, Sherman didn't know that, and died of a broken heart. At least for awhile, Americans could be found mimicking Sherman's schtick, in a happier time.

I once saw Allan Sherman on TV with Steve Allen, and they were making up songs on the spot based on whatever ideas came from the audience. Some young women gave as her topic “Eve Jackabowski.” Sherman is singing “Eve Jackabowski” over and over, muttering “What the Hell rhymes with Eve Jackabowski?” He suddenly snaps his fingers and says “Got it!” And immediately sings “Eve Jackabowski, lend me your house key, Please, I want to come in.” This man was a genius.

No, It's supposed to be a distinctly Jewish parody of an old folk song. All the songs on the album are meant to convey the perspective of a Jewish comic circa 1962.

+Barry Ryan Actually, it is typical of KZfaq closed captioning I have seen on many other videos. When I turn down the volume on interview videos and the like, and turn on closed captioning, I am astounded at how little sense the transcribed words make. Automated voice recognition without a "bias" toward the subject matter and dialect of the speech is an absolute disaster unless it is review by a human. Extraneous noises (such as instrumental accompaniment and laughing) don't exactly help either.
