Yesterday, at the state banquet hosted for the Emperor and Empress of Japan as part of their state visit, we saw the family order of King Charles III appear for the first time. Her Majesty the Queen was wearing her husband’s family order, with his portrait, on her left shoulder above the family order of her late mother-in-law Elizabeth II. The tradition of sovereigns granting female members of their family with a family order containing a portrait medallion goes back as far as the reign of King George IV - and if you want to know more about this fascinating tradition, go and have a look at my longer video on this subject. The order consists of a portrait miniature of the sovereign set within a gold frame embellished with stones and suspended from a coloured ribbon. The order has always been the personal gift of the sovereign and is not automatically granted - and it has been the usual practice since the reign of Edward VII, for the first recipient to be the Queen Consort. So it is no surprise that the Queen is the first person to be seen wearing it.

I know The Princess of Wales is ‘higher’ in rank than The Princess Royal, but I would really like to see His Majesty award his Family Order to Anne next. She’s been a loyal member of the family and exceedingly hard working for so long. I hope ‘Old Bean’ will do that for his beloved sister.

It doesn't have to be a competition. George VI held a luncheon the day before his coronation and awarded it to all the female members of his family. The only thing that rank differentiated was the size of the order. The larger ones went to his wife Queen Elizabeth and mother Queen Mary. Everyone else got the smaller ones.
@Kenzalina_
@Kenzalina_ Ай бұрын
I think he will award Duchesses at the same time as Princesses aswell. It’s probably why only Camilla has one now. With Catherine and Anne out of commission for now. Still it will be fun to see them all debuting them when they are ready. At some point a lot of the older Princesses and Duchesses will have three and possibly Camilla. It’s been a while since someone has had three and worn them all. I know that Margret had three and wore them together, I also know that the Queen Mum had the same three. Though normally she wore her husbands and daughters. Princess Alexandra is the only surviving to have George VI and Elizabeth II, It would be brilliant, for King Charles to give her one as well. The all time record holder must be Queen Mary of Teck. She was given the Order Victoria and Albert, the Order of Edward VII, the Order of George V, the Order of George VI and the Order of Queen Elizabeth II. Three of them were the largest size being the wife of a reigning Monarch, the second for being the Mother of a reigning Monarch, and the third for being the Grandmother of a reigning Monarch. Alas I will most likely only get to see three in my lifetime anyway. Unless the Queen already gave Princess Charlotte one. Like her Grandfather did for both her and Margaret as children.

I have to agree and nothing against Queen Camilla but she is Queen Consort whereas Princess Anne is Princess Royal and I argued, quite well I'm told, that her Majesty, May She Rest in שלום, Queen Elizabeth II should re write the order doing away with primo geneture, or male centric inheritance of the crown, so that Anne might become Queen upon her, Queen Elizabeth II, unfortunate, demise. We all see how well that went

I wonder if the King will bestow the Order on his granddaughter Princess Charlotte of Wales. She turned 9 in May, the same age that her late Great Grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II and her younger sister Princess Margaret received the Royal Family Order of their grandfather King George V. As the Kings Order strongly resembles that of King George V it would be a sweet nod to his late mother if Princess Charlotte received it at the same age.

I'm pretty sure she will, once she becomes of age and takes up public duties...and assuming that His Majesty is still alive. King Charles doesn't seem to be one who would be keen on bestowing such marks of distinction on children, not with his emphasis on a "slimmed-down" monarchy.

I wonder why some order sashes/ribbons run from the right shoulder to left hip (eg. RVO) and others from the left shoulder to right hip (eg. Garter)? It was one of the differences between the King's order, where he is wearing the RVO, and his grandfather's order, who is wearing the Garter.

The King is wearing the collar of the order of the Garter. Meaning he can't wear the sash at the same time, so the RVO was the next best thing. Although I would have thought that the order of the Thistle was higher ranking and the sash should have been worn instead of the RVO. But I guess I'm wrong.

@@richierich7229 The sash of the Thistle would be a dark green. The sash of the RVO pops up much more in this miniature picture. And as the sovereign Charles can decide what he want to wear. In the original portrait photo he wears the star of the Thistle, but this can't be seen on the miniature.

A nice design; and I've always liked The King's Royal Cypher design (more than some other choices of His Majesty's). It's without question that the Princess of Wales will receive one, and it's almost as certain that the Princess Royal and the Duchess of Edinburgh will as well. On the other hand, it seems unlikely that the Duchess of Sussex will be getting one in the foreseeable future, if ever. In any case, the miniature portraits themselves are hand-painted and thus each are slightly unique; as this is a laborious process it will be some time before those presently deserving of the Order will be able to receive it.

@@richierich7229 A few years before that Coronation, British industry and artists could craft Queen Mary's Doll House. Try replicating this today in a timely manner. I'm not saying that each of King Charles's Family Order badges would take several years to make, but it might be another year or even two before a lot of three or four are completed, assuming that the bottleneck is painting the miniature portrait, and depending on the priority Charles gives the project. The jewelry work is fairly simple and could be done in a matter of weeks.

The three Scandinavian monarchies also have royal family orders for its female members, but the ribbon colors don't change from reign to reign. The Norwegians and Danes use their national colors (red with blue and white edging for the Norwegians and white edged in red for the Danes) while the Swedes use the light blue of the Order of the Seraphim (the equivalent of Britain's Order of the Garter). Their ribbons are smaller than the British and are tied in the form of bows. I've never seen any of the recipients wearing more than one at a time, unlike in the U.K., so I assume anyone holding an order from more than one monarch simply replaces the portrait.

The diamonds set in the oval frame are brilliant cut stones (round) along with step cut stones (rectangular baguettes). There are essentially three modern cutting styles for diamonds: brilliant, meaning the facets are triangular and kite shape, step cut, where the facets are rectangular shape and parallel to the table facet, and mixed cut, a combination of brilliant and step. Also, I believe that yesterday Queen Camilla wore for the first time in public the Queen Elizabeth II Burmese Ruby Tiara. Earlier in the day she was also seen wearing the Williamson Brooch which contains at its center one of the world's largest and finest pink diamonds, weighing nearly 24 metric carats and cut as a round brilliant. I am sorry the Emperor and Empress were not able to be at Garter Day recently. I do hope I did not miss that one! I am looking forward to them coming to Garter Day when they are next in town. 😊

Dear Dr Allan Barton, could you please clarify the function of wearing "aiguillettes." It was my understanding that the wearer is either an edecan or Aid de Camps to the monarch. Nevertheless, I understood that in some cases it is also to indicate military rank. Can this be the case in the uniform of King Charles III? Thank you.

I wonder if HM The Kind wears this item of uniform because be was an ADC to his mother?
@gustavtracchia1341
@gustavtracchia1341 Ай бұрын
@@williamevans9426 I am inclined into believing the aiguillette King Charles III wears is indicative of his rank as Admiral of the Fleet. This is based by observing the other two family order, the one with the portrait of King George V and the one with the portrait of King George VI. Including the one for King Charles III, all three are almost identical. The three of kings are wearing the naval uniform of Admiral of the fleet, the blue sash of the Order of the Garter and finally we can partially see the gilded cords of the aiguillettes. What rest to learn is, if when these three monarchs were crown princes and ADC of the current monarch at that time, the aiguillettes differed - in some details - from the one used as ADC vs the ones indicating the highest naval rank.

@@williamevans9426 I must correct myself when I wrote "the three most recent male monarchs are wearing the blue sashes of the Order of the Gater." King Charles III is making an exception, since in his official portrait of 2023, he is wearing the sash of the Victorian Order instead and that portrait is the one used for the family order here discussed.

The red portrait was commissioned by the Drapers’ Company of the City of London. They asked if he could sit for it and as there’s hundreds of years of tradition that the Monarch has a portrait at Drapers’ Hall, Charles agreed. Charles didn’t pay for it, he didn’t choose the artist, he had no input into what it looked like, and it isn’t for him to display

I wonder why The King is pictured wearing the GCVO sash rather than The Thistle as he's wearing the collar of the Garter. Perhaps its because the GCVO is something of but not exclusively a family order.
@red.aries1444

The sash of the Thistle would be dark green. You wouldn't see much of it on this small picture. As the souvereign he can decide which decorations he wants to wear. In the original portrait photo he is wearing the star of the Thistle, but it's not included in the miniature.
