5 Things I Hate About Owning a 90's Honda

This is the harsh reality of owning a 90's Honda and 5 things I HATE about these cars. In today's video I (for once) focus on the negatives of being a Honda owner rather than the rainbows and unicorns. Feelings might be hurt.
As you all know by now, I love my 1999 Honda Civic Coupe. I talk a lot about how much I enjoy owning this car and modifying it in my videos. However, there are some downsides to owning these iconic cars that I rarely talk about. So I wanted to make this video to highlight the few things I hate (some outside my control) and give some insight from a guy that's learned the hard way. This video will cover 90's Honda's as a whole (not just Honda Civics). This includes the 3 different Generations of 90's Civics (EF, EG, EK), Preludes, CRX, Del Sol, Accord, and even Acura Integra's. Pretty much anything in that popular 90's realm of Honda's!
Honda theft is one of the BIGGEST things that plagues every 90's Honda owner. These cars get stolen or parts stolen from them EVERY SINGLE DAY. Theft is one of the MOST violating things that can happen to a person and leave them with a never-ending feeling of anxiety. So I talk about why Honda's get stolen and ways on how to prevent car or part theft. I've been a victim to Honda theft on several occasions and it SUCKS. So let's make the Honda world a better place and talk about why stealing Hondas is simply not worth it.
I talk about build quality and safety of these cars, but this topic is somewhat subjective. I DO think that these cars are built well for the price, but there are some downsides. Honda's are arguably some of the most modded and worked on vehicles in the world. People enjoy modifying these cars and tearing things apart to rebuild them. While the engines are the strong point of this topic, its everything else where the quality is just...Cheaper. Yes I realize that I'm being picky about a sub 20k car and that you get what you pay for. However, the body of these cars are thin and definitely not the safest cars on the market. The interiors can become brittle and break without effort. The paint is lucky to last more than 20 years, and so on.
I lastly talk about the perception of other crappy Honda's and how these cars can inevitably become money pits. I've been a 16 year kid with bad taste in the past and did not spend my money wisely. I've installed bad mods, wasted money, and cried tears over things because I cut corners. The point of me making these Honda Civic project videos is to show people how to build a clean Honda with realistic expectations. I didn't have this kind of content when I was a kid, so I hope my experience and information is passed on to make Honda's clean again. Try not to get too offended about my points in this video, I'm just very passionate about this stuff. With that said, enjoy!
Are there things you HATE about being a 90's Honda owner? Leave a comment below telling me why!
Thanks to Bart Cepek for the thumbnail photo and JW Media/Basic Brando for the rolling shots!
Here are some of the theft-prevention things I talked about in this video!

Hide kill switches. I live 1.5 hours south of Atlanta. The place where a friend of mine had 2 stolen out of his yard at the same time one night. Every Honda I had, has had 2 kill switches. One for a fuel pump relay, and one for that switch. Both would have to be activated and they were hidden. Also, get a rear door handle for your front doors without key holes. If you have keyless entry. Then your screwed right? 2nd hidden hood latch release cable somewhere behind a bumper or wheel well. That way you can get to the battery and won’t be stranded.

@@nimaiazevedo7383 lol you being sarcastic?!! I’m just kidding lol. Honestly I have no clue if that would even work, that would just keep them from driving as far as the pump kill switches. But my buddy got his civic and integra stolen same time. Roll back then a dolly all at once. But a shaved key is how they got in both or so he was told cause they were caught. Both cars recovered but the civic was a total loss and the integra had the b20v pulled out and some interior parts missing. I hate thieves. We should be able to leave keys in at all time doors unlocked and never worry :/

I’ve had 2 Honda Civics both EX models, a 97 (my 1st car) and a 2k (my 2nd) both I modified it. 2nd car had more suspension mods on it, and a GT wing and fiberglass front lip. Both in major accidents. I know the plight of what I hated about my Honda - but remember Honda owners hating on Honda ( you’re not hating , you’re stating ) And now I have a 04’ Nissan 350Z that I’ve have for 17yrs. Get a car that has what you want. If it’s a Honda Honda or something else. Do what you love. And a real car guy doesn’t hate on another person’s car that they are fixing up. Just stating the obvious. But seriously the D16 Series SOHC is an easy engine to build and modify. And as a Honda guy at heart 💜 Save the D-Series engine. If I ever get another Honda again it would be an older Hatch. And I would put in D16Y8 engine ( of the EX model ) in an 89 or 90 hatch as a work vehicle for my cleaning business. 👍🏼

I owned a 6th gen accord sedan (98-02) and one day found myself hitting a tree at about 25 - 30 mph. That was a wild ride, but I'll say this those two air bags went off like a shotgun blast. They worked like they were supposed to keeping me from smashing my face on the steering wheel. What sold on Honda safety was how the car transferred the impact around me and to the rear of the car. The front windshield even small crack in it, didnt break, but the rear window shattered. I wasn't hurt just a bit dazed for a moment. Car crashes are not fun lol do avoid them if possible. Be safe.

For number 1, the first thing people should do is get an alarm AND a club. I have both for my 96 civic. Next, make a project to hide your alarm. Most installers just put it underneath the dashboard and call it a day. I hid mine in a different location and ran alarm wire with my factory wire so its really hard to tell what wire is alarm wire. I also added a killswitch that activates with my alarm.

I have been binge-watching each and every single video of the 48 about the Civic. I drive a 2021 on the daily, and have zero intention on modding or upgrading or anything. Yet, I couldn't stop watching the next video, and the next. And the next. I like your down to earth attitude, and I think the reason the Civic is much more popular with your audience over the sweet Evo, is because it's a dream available to most people - it's within reach for most of us to spend $1,500 on a car and take it from there. Please keep up with the Civic series - and for the love of God, please take us on more road trips like the 150 miles around the Valley you had with the boys in April!

Luckily I've invested in a lot of wait time and lots of homework and will finally get to build a modest Toyota Cavalier clone. It did not happen over time but quite a bit of dedication and lots of dreaming went into this project. I want to eventually drive down from Spokane to Boise and showcase this ride in the near future. Most of what you said is from the heart and your wisdom shows. Growing older is spectacular isn't it? Keep the great work up man. Simplicity is key. Cheers!

It isn't fast, but it has a manual transmission and no power steering, making it a blast to drive. I have an AEM intake and a Yonaka cat-back on it, and it came with cut springs. I hope to get it a mini-me swap or even a B18b swap in the future. Thanks for the awesome content!

its not the number of gears you need to worry about for freeway cruising, its gear ratio. There are lots of ways to change your gear ratios in honda's easily. When i went from 120hp d16z to a 400whp b18c turbo. I swapped out the terrible final ratio in my lsd. made freeways a lot more fun

It's kind of crazy seeing that pic pop up after having one of their tags on my backpack for years, never really knowing how much they actually do at that shop. I remember when that crash happened. I definitely understand the points he makes in this video. My girlfriend owns a red 01' EX that looks very similar to this one, and just installing the radio the panels definitely felt like they were going to snap if they were handled with any sort of force. Also, interesting point about the airbag. Not two weeks after she bought it, her brother (who had basically totaled two cars prior) was driving it and got into a front end accident that totally messed up the front, but the airbag didn't deploy. I thought it was just because he was driving under 25 Mph, but it seems like this may be a pattern with these Honda's. Anyway, awesome job on the video, love the time and care put into this video (eg, the voiceover for a better quality listening experience).

Dang, you really called me out on my build. Rattle-canned black (genuinely, it could look WORSE!), beat to hell and straight-piped. To be fair though, like myself, I imagine most people's Honda is the A to B car. I door dash in mine, and when you put 30k+ miles a year on a car, the paint is the bottom of your list. And in my defense I bought it beat up and rattle-canned. Previous owner(s) chopped the muffler too. Straight pipe was pretty cheap, and kept the exhaust gas out of the cabin. As a matter of fact, it's actually a bonus. A beat up, loud and ugly pos is the last thing someone would want to steal. I coulllllld do without all the middle fingers from everyone (and I mean e v e r y o n e) though but I'll get over it.

100% agree with every reason you described. I've had a few friends crash their Honda's and guy wearing seat belt is doing ok but guy without seat belt still isn't the best/"back to normal" and that wreck was almost 2 yrs ago. I've had alot of break ins, mainly radios, change and some parts in trunk stolen. Had a first gen CRV that started with filed down key and could pull key out while running..... I've owned all different kind of Honda's from slammed civics, preludes, accords and integras to a lifted CRV but my current 92 eg sedan with B16a2 swap is probably rowdiest of em all. Slammed with complete front and rear suspension swap from 94 integra. Steering is soooooo much lighter, bigger brakes/hubs and rear disk brakes. Went with sedan bc I got 2 kiddos and they love riding in "Panda". My kids named it that bc it's white with 5% tint all around with brow on windshield plus 5% blacked out 1 piece headlights.

I go to tear into my interior, do the Del Sol seat swap, broke a bolt, re-wrap my headliner, sagging a little now, swapped to non-power doors, locks don't work well. All the same with the money pit as well, I'm going to be pretty deep into my 99 EX with body work, paint and correction, and the motor I'm rebuilding for boost now. In the end it's really all you, only thing I've got to say to new Honda owners is PLEASE DO NOT CHEAP OUT ON PARTS!!!! No that hood scoop doesn't look good on your stock N/A Y7, No those 60 dollar headers off ebay do not flow better, and unless you're experienced with spray paint, just save up and have your local body shop fix it. To each their own love the video, thank you for coming to my TED-Talk.

Hey Anthony I gotta tell you, your Honda Civic is the cleanest I've ever seen like really and that's my favorite year model. We have the same taste of modifying hondas and the way I'd like to think about it, is if a person is looking for a civic, would he much rather prefer a heavily modified civic or a civic like yours which is oem plus and a little modification but clean and quality. They would much rather prefer yours. Clean Oem style always has the highest value in price.

I removed my college buddy’s interior as a prank (94 Integra) while he was in class with no issues and put it all back together. Granted, I also owned an integra and worked on my car a lot. And this was 04, so it was only ten years old at the time. The “trick” is patience, using panel pry tools and pushing clips back when the panels won’t give and just starting over. People yank and tug versus actually undoing the clips.

Always been a Prelude guy. I got a 95SE as a 2nd car prior to college in 2001. Man....I loved that car. Few things happened, bippity boppity boop, I find myself in the Navy in 2005. I'm from TN. I get stationed in CA. Cool...well, I wanna bring out my Prelude to have, y'know...a car. Have it shipped, get to enjoy it for a couple weeks. Stay over at a friends house one night. Woke up the next morning...minus a car. Police useless. Eventually found it 3-4 days later. A farmer found it ditched in his fields. Got it going again...Not even close to as nice as it was before, but it was wheels. Eventually sold the car in NM in 2008, and the guy was still driving it around there in 2015. Car had quite the life. In 2018, I had the opportunity to purchase a 94 Prelude Si One owner. Had alot of miles, but had been treated well mechanically. THe paint/trim however was ROUGH. Found a place to get a decent cheap paint job. Refinished what I could of the rubber trim. Replaced all the bushings, new tires, etc. And I still drive it today alongside my 2017 Camaro SS, and 2018 Titan. Just can't beat a Honda..There's just something about them. But unfortunately, yes. As soon as you mentioned THEFT First. I had to chime in lol....Cheers!
