Allegiant Airlines A320 Trip Report (Economy) | Punta Gorda (PGD) to Houston Hobby (HOU)

Hello everyone!
Welcome back to another trip report! This was my first ever time flying out of the Punta Gorda Airport. It's located about 30-40 minutes north of RSW and Allegiant is the only airline to serve the airport. Sun Country will fly there in late fall of 2021. Hope you enjoy!

My Grandma goes to Florida in the wintertime. being from Fort Wayne, Indiana, I always flew Allegiant from Fort Wayne to Sarasota. She only lives a half hour from Sarasota Bradenton airport. I'll be on that flight tomorrow.

Although my Florida house is only a few miles from Fort Myers airport, I always drive the 30 minutes to Punta Gorda to take the 2 hour direct Allegiant flight to and from Raleigh. I've done it maybe 7 times. It is a direct flight, whereas anything leaving from Fort Myers will surely stop somewhere and take several hours of travel time. The Allegiant planes out of Punta Gorda are relatively new, but even so they are quite plain with little leg room. But for me, since I don't need to carry even a toothbrush, it's like having a private jet. Well, maybe not like that, but at least like having a flying bus. One thing to watch out for is they won't let people on or off the planes in Punta Gorda if there is lightning within 5 miles of airport, which happens a lot during the Summer when the daily afternoon rain hits. I don't think I've ever encountered a bad flight attendant on Allegiant, which is more than I can say for Delta or United or just about my other airline besides Southwest.

Looks to me like you had a safe and comfotable flight. It cost you $ 33. to fly to Houston; that's less than the bus ! I fly Allegiant from Plattsburgh, New York & it's great. The seats are pretty comfortable and no recline for the short flights is not a problem. I'm 6 ft. and legroom was ok; guess 6 ft. 2" is the limit; try a front seat behind the bulkhead, more legroom.

We flew out of Providence on Allegiant ro Punta Gorda a few years ago and it was fine. However, we now fly on Avelo out of New Haven, Ct since it's so much closer to our home (35 minutes vs 80 minutes) We have non-stop choices to Sarasota or Fort Myers and it's less than Allegiant.

I live in Naples and I have only flown in or out of Punta Gorda twice. Fort Myers is way closer plus a lot more options. What’s your opinion on Avelo? I did the inaugural flight from RSW to New Haven and everyone I talked too said the convenience of that flight is key.

@@rswtraveler I agree with the convenience of New Haven being very attractive but we also like the smallness of the airport. There is an abundance of charging ports in the waiting area but there are great views of the ramp. Just like you when you flew on Allegiant, we were given the option of boarding through the rear hatch of the plane which we did. It provided a unique view of the aircraft that we thoroughly enjoyed. We sat in the exit row and enjoyed the legroom (my wife being 5-9 and me 6-4) Avelo is a no-frills get-you-to-your-destination-and-back airline. They have a fleet of 737-700's on the east coast that were originally operated by Southwest. The planes were clean, well lit and everyone with Avelo was very friendly, helpful and seemed enthusiastic about working for the airline. One of the aspects of the trip we appreciated was not being constantly encourage to fill out forms to get an airline credit card. That would likely be our #1 complaint about Allegaint. Avelo, did none of that. In our minds, Avelo is our go-to airline!
