Eh, every Allen Edmond shoe I've owned has had defects. Poor quality in my opinion.

Looking forward to own my first Allen Edmond shoes made with this leather. I love the fact that this is an investment piece. Yes, the product is pricey, but you are paying for the product of a reputable brand known for their high quality product make from this the best material and old fashioned and skilled production methods that make a product last forever. I am also pleased with the fact they offer a recraft service. You can bring your shoes for "renew" if you treatment. This types of shoes are for many years. Thank you for keeping this tradition.

I bought a pair of allen edmonds cordovan boots. The heal fell off one boot , now the upper stitching is coming away from the mid. All within a year.

Not a lot of info there to understand how hard you are on them, but I'd suggest you go to a cobbler. That's what people normally do, they take them to a cobbler to get re soled

Wait so cordovan has “genuine” aswell as genuine leather for cowhide? are they cheaper than actual cordovan just like full grain are more expensive to genuine?

still not sure what the difference is between a leather shoe and a cordovan leather shoe???? Is it the type of leather or the process it goes through?

Cordovan is leather made from the fibrous flat muscle (or shell) beneath the hide on the rump of the horse (see Wikipedia). I wonder how many cordovan leather shoes would be sold if it were generally know that the leather is horse leather, not cow leather... In any case, beautiful stuff (and I own some Allen Edmonds shoes).

Thanks for the explanation ghostwriter11 I do appreciate it. I love their shoes too. I have a pair I inherited and was hooked. Plus like the fact they are still made in America too. I am guess the reason they are horse leather is why they tend to be more expensive generally.

Josef Knutsen You are exactly right. One is that it is horse hide, which is much less available than cow hide. Secondly, cordovan leather is much stronger and resistant that cow's hide leather. Take this will the relatively low maintenance time (cordovan leather doesn't need as much TLC as cow's hide) and you have a pretty popular product.

+Josef Knutsen - I'm hardly a leather expert, but Cordovan just looks classy as hell, it is such an elegant look. I own Cordovan Park Avenues...they look SO much nicer than the cow hide. Shoes like the Strand look fine in cow hide, but for a nice dress shoe, Cordovan is the way to go (assuming you can afford it, of course).

Lil Nealy Generally horse hides are sourced from France and Canada where horses are still raised as part of the food industry.

Disgusting is still disgusting no matter how people try to spin and justify it. Still, it's an industry that has thrived for over a century or two and has its place in history. I'm not convinced about its future though.

I love horses. Most people do. But seriously...there's no difference in raising horses for food/hide than cows. Or pigs. Or sheep. Or ostrich. Etc.

I don't see why a horse should be regarded any higher than any cattle. Dogs are a different story. We can get into that if you want.
