Amoeba chert from Edwards Plateau, TX.
Making a point from a large spall or large biface is a specialized skill and requires a different mindset compared to making smaller points. The transition from starting "big" and then trying to finish "small" is not easy. It's best to put aside large bifaces when they get too small, and make smaller points another day. Many new knappers try to obtain the largest spalls possible so that they can have "plenty of room to make a point". This is not a good strategy. It is better to stay within a certain size range and focus on that particular size.
It's hard for me to explain the differences between large and small biface knapping. The main thing to keep in mind that many instructors will teach knapping from the perspective of large point manufacture, but this is only a small portion of the art of knapping and a difficult place for beginners to start.

Why not use a spalling hammer made of copper with a rotating head? You get the weight and gripping action of copper, but without the shock of steel.

No. Only certain types of stone respond to heat. Chert, agate, chalcedony, jasper, flint, and Novaculite are examples of types that can improve with heat.

@KnapperJackCrafty

The only way to "find" agate is to get a piece of what you suspect is agate and test it by chipping or taking it to a rock dealer, who will test it by some method.

@@KnapperJackCrafty sorry I didn't make myself clear. Actually I find rock I'm 100% sure is agate. The problem is I just find chippings when it rains... I wanted some advice on where to find bigger pieces because I can only find gnarly pieces that cannot be made into points. Also I know it needs heat treatment but I don't know how it goes
@KnapperJackCrafty
@KnapperJackCrafty 3 жыл бұрын
@@adroaldoribeiro4529 On the surface, bigger pieces can sometimes be found on hilltops or on river banks. You can look in actual rivers and streams (where the water is) but the action of the water and freeze damage, usually breaks down the agate into small pieces. If bigger pieces are not there, you'll need to start digging but that could take forever, literally. Sometimes the only agate you'll find are small, gnarly pieces for miles and miles.

Have you spalled before. It looks hard. A huge piece of tabular chert is almost all gravel. Yikes. A hammer stone would have been nice tool for the job.
@KnapperJackCrafty
@KnapperJackCrafty 3 жыл бұрын
Watch the rest of the series. Many useable pieces and spalls. And no, a hammerstone would not have done better. This nodule was not tabular chert and it was not an ideal stone for spalling. But it did improve with heat.😁
