They work great till they get wet. Then they leave the soil saturated and run off the top them selves. Wood absorbs a ton of water, but once it has had its fill. You get muddy mulch. In the past I maintained hiking trails and lots of park goings would complain and state we needed mulch. Yet the trails stayed wet longer because we added mulch. Our streams and lakes were also littered with mulch as it washes away in heavy rain events.

howsit, great videos by the way. i had a similar problem, albeit with pigs and not cows. where i was a bit behind in a growth on the next section of forage (we live and learn) which resulted in a very similar situation.and being very much little to no budget, I went out and cut as much brush as i could and coated the strip they were on in rough horizontal lines. Pigs being pigs trampled and pushed most of it into the mud and it helped create just that extra bit of hold for the top soil. not sure how applicable it would be in your situation but thought id share. cheers thanks for the videos.

Thank you, that's a good idea. I will say the video may make it seem worse than it is. Most of what I showed was not actually running off but cow tracks and some water. But I definitely plan to do something about it very soon. Maybe some sorghum sudan maybe just a good pasture mix. A lot of old hay in there to help bind the soils. That may be another good video opportunity. Getting some old hay to be unrolled and cover up the "alleyway" thanks for the ideas.

@@mossyrootsfarm2263that would probably work really well, basically just a big ol sponge to soak it up and again add a bit extra to mass to that top layer. would be interesting to see how it come back after the rain, if it makes a difference in growth at all. cheers
