I think it is really worth mentioning substrate. The number 1 cause of Bichir deaths is impaction from eating gravel. Bare bottom or sand is a must for them IMO. I love my Senegal Bichirs, I have an albino and a Platinum. In a tank with a gold fish. Zero issues.

Thank you for posting this John. The first thing people do when they see my tanks is point and ask about the bichers (delhezi and senegal). They call them sea serpents, water dragons, legless crocs, etc. Lol. They are in a 135g at the moment while I finish putting together my 320g 8 ft tank filtered by a 100 gallon custom sump bought for $50!!! The 320g was gifted to me unassembled by a great fellow fishkeeper on Craigslist. Gotta love the fish keeping community...most of the time! Lol. It will also be a planted tank with tankmates (ghost knifefish and, of course, Oscar's, etc). Great video. I've been waiting for it. You're "Bikers" look happy and healthy. I kept bichirs (delhezi, polli, and senegalus) for almost 10 years until I sold them recently because I'm preparing to move overseas. They're very interesting to watch, especially come feeding time. Incredibly hardy, too. Got hit by a 2-day blackout during a storm and they were just fine because they can breathe air. Bichirs are one of my favorite fish, and I'm surely going to keep them again once my situation permits.

I love any fish with ganoid scales. Its awesome and gives you a glimpse into a time long long ago when the waters were such a tough neighborhood the fish needed armor plates on their hide just to survive. They all tend to be air breathers so way back they also had to endure nasty stagnant water. Eventually modern scales took over because fish with teardrop shaped thin scales were faster and more maneuverable and grew bigger teeth to get want they wanted but Arrowhead, Saratoga, Gars and the Asian dragon fish and bowfins would look fantastic in one huge tank and along with the Bichirs it would be like stepping back in time. Even a few African butterfly fish could be tossed in for size comparison.

How did you go about feedings when you had them as juveniles? I got my first one and he’s soooo little and have got him to eat worms. But that’s it so far and want him to be able to eat other things. And how often CAN you feed without over feeding them?
@Ryodraco
@Ryodraco Жыл бұрын
@@Cichlid_4_ever when they're young and growing fast I think you can readily feed them until they look fatter, then wait for them to digest before feeding again. They detect food by scent, so smelly food items are good. If you can get them on sinking pellets as their main diet it will make things a lot easier. If a pellet is too big then just break it into pieces.

I kept Ornate Bichirs - they are the easily the prettiest of the group, imho. You'll need a good size tank because the adult size is impressive. They can live for anything up to 15 years and develop quite a significant intelligence... so it's more of a 'proper pet' than a simple tropical fish. Mine were intelligent enough to recognise me as the 'food source' and would zip out and beg like dogs when I approached the tank... No other person approaching the tank elicited that response... I've always felt that because of the higher intelligence, this fish needs something to keep it 'interested' in the aquarium. I used plenty of wood and decor with interesting features for them to swim around, through and investigate...

What's your two cents i have a 12 inch pleco that I have had for many years in my 135gl with 4 fancy goldfish. People warn that the pleco will attack the gold fish but it has never touched them. And shows no interest in them at all it only eats green beans cucumbers and maybe some gold fish pellets if it beats the gold fish to them. Now again people warn about these fish and plecos for the same reason but honestly I don't think my pleco would hurt them think I would be safe to add 2 of them to my tank? I'm going to just go to petsmart and get them from there so they are just one solid color I think they are a smaller breed of them. Still researching and asking questions. Thanks for your advice.

I love my 9 Senegal's they're about a year old my largest 4 are 3 wild types and one albino already 8-10 inches from what I've found online they're probably females. The other 4 seem to grow slower. They're 5-6 inches but I'm pretty they're all males. The last small one is an albino I think is a female but her growth is slightly stunted she had dropsy and had been there for a few weeks before I got her. She was at a different pet store than I usually buy fish from. I'll leave another comment as a reply to this one and in the regular comment section detailing how I've raised mine as well as my observations and experiences. if that's something your interested in please read it.

The Ornate Bichir is the largest of the upper jaw species but the largest of all Bichir species is the Congicus. Wild Caught Bichirs regardless of Species grow much larger than their Captive Bred counter part due the generations of breeding the same lineage of fish. One of the most emphasized traits of a Captive Bred specimen due to inbreeding are they developed Froggy eyes/frog face and a stocky build and a shorter body (I think your Endlicheri are captive Bred? )

Seems likely. I got my Endli a few years ago when it was young enough to still have external gills, and I'm not sure if it was captive bred or not, but it has a notably longer face than his Endli. It's over 17 inches now and quite a impressive fish, I feel a bit sorry for the ones suffering inbreeding deformities but at least it doesn't seem to have impacted the health of his Endlicheri.

Yay finally my favorite fish. I have an Ornate, Polli, Delhezi, Senegal and an albino Senegal. They do get big though. I started with a 38 bow front, upgraded to a 90 with 30 sump. See how long before I need to get an even bigger tank the Ornate is the largest at approximately 10 inches right now.

@@moanooga-9346 He wasn't growing that fast then I switched him to hikari massivore sinking pellets and he had a growth spurt. Have had him around a year and it's double the size of my Senegal I've had for 6 more months. The ornate is by far my fastest growing bichir. Think it will hit 16 to 18 inches full grown.

Yeah my Ornate is currently about 10 inches while my Delhezi is around 8 inches but started both at a 75 gallon tank with a pretty decent size Rope Fish and that Rope Fish swims right under that Ornate named " Puff " at all times and it's pretty unique because it NEVER FAILS that Rope Fish stays right under or over " Puff " and my Delhezi's name is " Stuff ". So " Puff " & " Stuff " 🤣. But at their sizes now I'm currently looking for something around mid 120-150 gallon wise. Good luck with your Bichirs my friend!!!

@@joshuaw.vinson4082 it's funny how once you have a couple they start piling on top of each other. Mine tend to hang out in a big group when they aren't swimming around.

I have kept these guys and their cousins the rope/reed fish for more than 10 years. I was asking myself whether you had any impressions of bichirs. I had not seen anything. Then I saw your "New Fish" video. I have a 72 gal half circle, so I need to stay with the smaller varieties. I can rarely find them locally. Do you have any recommended online sources?

YAY... a guide to my favorite fish. Its on a do not import list in Australia (Note this is not do not sell or breed. The government are okay with them being rare, as that will stop people dumping them) so they cost over $100 a for a Senagal, and over $500 for anything else... But one day.... ONE DAY... I will have one.

They are pretty much blind. That’s why they play with their food. So they can tell if it will fit in their mouth.

How often do you do water changes on that big of tank? What percentage of water? Do you use the water for watering outside landscapes? Just interested to know. Maybe do a complete water change video on that size of tank if ya haven't already. Really enjoy y'alls videos. Thanks.
