Such an excellent video. I love that you took time to highlight anatomical and physiological specialties and adaptations in the bichir. The quality of the footage, of course, is also above par and gorgeous. I love that you mentioned the "death-roll" as well. Which I have not heard mention in my research of these Delhezi and Erpetoichthys calabaricus. I purchased two ropefish just over a month ago and recently heard them clacking a snail around in their tank one evening. I rose to look and saw just this: a snail had appeared dead earlier that day. I left it in the tank just to make sure it wasn't "sleeping" as they often do, half exposed. But evidently it gave off the proper chemical signature for the "rope-sters" as one had pinched the snails body into his mouth and was spinning vigorously about the tank, smacking the snail's shell against glass and rock and driftwood as it attempted to dislodge the body with centrifugal force and brute tactics. It was quite impressive even displayed by my juvenile ropefish.

Thank you for watching the video and taking the time to leave a comment. I hope to film Erpetoichthys calabaricus in the near future. I have lots of ideas for them, and your experience with the snail is certainly one that I would love to film. However, I am a little concerned about the edge of the snail's shell cutting the ropefish as it spins. Thanks for sharing your experience with me. . .

That fish is A MONSTER. This is probably the best 15 minutes I've ever spent on youtube. He looks like such a messy eater and probably wreaks havoc on that tank. How often do you have to readjust your hardscape, or do you just let him do what he wants with it? The fish is awesome and I learned a lot about something I didn't even know existed. Subbed!
@TheDave333
@TheDave333 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the kind words. Believe it or not, he's not really that messy. However, I don't normally feed him big pieces of meat like you saw in the video. That was mainly just to get him to do a death roll. Even though he seems like he would wreak havoc on a planted tank, he's actually very gentle and graceful. I only make minor changes to the hardscape when I clean up. I could easily have made a 45 minute video about these fish, they are remarkable creatures. Thanks for subbing. :-D

I truly enjoyed this video! Would’ve really liked to see a full shot of this tank as well. Very informative and worth another watch if I plan on obtaining this species.

Wow this is documentary worthy and felt like i was watching NatGeo wild, no lie👍 Very much enjoyed this and will be checking out more of your content. Its sad that stupid dog or cat videos get millions of views but channels like this with quality content and production with loads of knowledge arent utilized. That should give everyone a clue to what type of mindset the general population have. I fear for future generations but hope to teach my children differently by exposing them to old school quality documentaries (like this one;)etc. Thank you for a great presentation on this specie

Beautiful Work! Have been keeping from years & I totally enjoye it thoroughly! It's surprising they share some personality traits with Snakeheads (CHANNA species).

Thanks for watching the video. They remind me of snakeheads as well. Another amazing fish. . . They're illegal where I live. (US).

Awesome presentation. Bichirs are wonderful fish, and under the right care it's amazing how attentive and lively they can be.

It's true, mine recognizes me and responds to my presence when I enter the room. He knows me as "the bringer of food." My wife on the other hand gets no response or recognition. She does not feed him. He can also make sounds when he's agitated. Fascinating fish ! :-)

Yes, I've had my baby only three weeks and he recognizes the worm pail and gets excited and swims over waiting for me to give him a worm. He's really fun to interact with.

Bichirs are so cool! They are the epitome of the evolutionary gap between fish and amphibians. So cool, and so prehistoric. It’s like the species just got frozen in time.

I agree ! They are true survivors, and a beautiful example of adaptation in a changing environment. They have quite an evolutionary toolkit . . .
