When I was a boy there used to be a Chalmers tractor production factory just down the road. I went there when I was fifteen to start as an apprentice. Shows you how old I am, they were good days, and the old boys taught me everything they knew.

The miracle is not that you got it to run but the fact that two brothers were able to do it and get along together so well . My hat's off to you , God bless . Really enjoy your videos .

I had an HD-5, loved it. It is an agricultural tractor with a loader kit. Some recommendations: go ahead and pull the fuel tank off and remove the left and right steering brake/steering clutch covers. There are two holes in the bottom that I believe are 1-1/4 npt. If holes are open, pack rats and mice will fill the cavities with debris. Clean them out before engaging. I had on the that broke beyond repair. No part was available at the time and had to have machine shop fab up a replica. (Some resources parting machines out on antique tractor forums after) Clean and lube it all up. Some zerks in there too. It is a tight spot to work in and well worth the effort to same a lot of hours and busted knuckles. Also be very careful running with no water. Had a hole in radiator too. Brought truck into pasture as close as I could to haul it back to shop, didn't make it 30 yds before it came apart. Sad day...... I built a canopy for it and extended muffler above canopy. Made a huge difference, still needed ear plugs when working it long or hard. Pull floor plate up to reveal clutch inspection cover on top center. It has an adjustable clutch. Inspect the mechanical linkages and make sure true and square. Several cotter keys. Make sure they are appropriate size and not falling g apart. Several grease zerks in there too.

They was a Tough old tractor. I started operating with a1957 Allis Chambers HD6 Dozer.....You had to have 8 arms and 4 feet it seemed like....LoL.....Glad to see You got the old Girl running....

Lots of memories here, I operated two of these old AC Tractors way back in the early 60's, a Loader and a Dozer, We carried a can of Ether pellets to help start these old Ladies, there was a pump canister on the dash to drop an ether egg (What We called them) then drop the needle and pump it, started every time

I just used my 1956 Allis Chalmers hd6g today. Still running strong!

Both tracks froze, 10 inches deep, and not ran for 23 years. Offered it to a logger for scrap value. I told him we used to pull it in 3rd to start it. Skidded it for 200 yards. I told him to pick up each side and drop a couple feet, and to hit rear track up high with dozer blade to chisel it forward. Nothing to lift with, but first strike from behind with blade, pop. Freed both tracks. Pulled it and had it running and driving within 50 yards. Smoked like mad, would hide a battleship, but cleared pretty quick. I told him I never thought I'd hear that run again. These are easy to pull to start. Mine was orange with big bucket. Seemed like an older, bigger AC.

Well I learned a thing; I did not know how a 2 stroke diesel worked. Thank you for the explanation and getting this fella flexing again.

This dozer is well worth the investment to save a rad and oil before the clutchs and tracks . Please more video's to see if you get a first move now we have success in a first start. Awesome.

I had the same type engine in our missile launcher in the Army. A 2-stroke diesel which the fuel rack DID get stuck in the full throttle position. We had to smother the intake with a user's manual that was 3 inches thick. All while the driver is sitting in the track driver's seat hold the laterals (steering/braking) hard to keep from running over me. We tried opening the drain cock of the fuel filters but only got a great soaking of fuel. Never forget it. Them damn engines were hell to maintain and keep running. Ahh the memories.

That's awesome I have that exact dozer I just bought it a year ago and I love it! Just picked up a carco model e winch for it today. Im using it to build a dam for my future lake. Great job guys cool vid!

I spent a number of years running a AC HD 5 like this except it was the dozer blade and winch version. The oil company I worked for had one and I built a lot of roads and well locations with that old dozer. I loved running it the sound that Detroit makes when your working is amazing not to mention that little 2-71 sure had the power. We had the engine completely rebuilt and put new undercarriage on it made her one fine machine.

Would really like to see another video on the out come of the HD5G. I have the same machine and absolutely love it! Super easy to work on and massively over kill built for its size. Great work guys and again hope to see a follow up vid!

Absolutely love seeing videos with these old Detroit's that haven't been run in forever. From the videos I've seen on KZfaq as long as the rack doesn't stick they're pretty much indestructible. Deboss garage tried to run one away and it just wouldn't and even when it did and then died it started right back up. Although it did then proceed to open a new service hole in the crankcase lmao

Watching your process brought back some similar issues that I had inherited a machine similar ...possibly only a few yrs newer with a buds engine...pulled the head new rings rod bearings and valves...it gave me fits to get started ..had the starter and injectors rebuilt..it ran great

was a kid. And the rear cylinder rack needs a tweak. I ran a dragline with a 3-71 that popped and smoked off one cylinder except under load when it cleaned out. Found out what injector it was and got a rebuilt one. Put it in and the hole that the setting tool fit into was ruined so no real way to set it. Started it and it still popped and smoked. Played with the rack by ear and it cleaned out and ran fine from then on.Good job U 2! GBWYall!

I have been a two stroke diesel fan all my life and particularly like Detroit's!

Totally surprised that the valve snapping off didn't destroy that cylinder. Lucked out on that one. This thing might have some potential. The hydraulic tank being empty is likely a result of a blown hose somewhere. After 17 years, all the fluid that leaked out is several feet into the ground. Will have to hunt that leak. Congrats. I could watch this video again...LOL

Wes, Allis built over 29,000 HD-5s from 1946-1955 if you have a serial we can date her more exact. Amazing how simple and durable those old units were.
