Allis Chalmers WD 45 Marvel Schebler Carb Service

A Marvel Schebler Carb off of a 1956 Allis Chalmers WD45 is the subject of today's exercise. If you saw the recent First Start of the WD, you've seen the product of this video in action already. So many details of the cleaning of the carb would have had to be left out if this had been included in the First Start video. Having a separate video will allow those that may have the desire to see in more depth and detail the process I typically use for servicing these as well as Zenith carbs on old machines.
One thing to bear in mind, this video is not a total restoration or even that thorough of a 'servicing' of the carb. Usually they will be subjected to a few cycles of an ultrasonic parts washer filled with a commercial carb cleaning product. I'm hitting this one with a lick and a promise for the explicit purpose of getting the WD to run to assess the condition of the motor. IF she becomes a 'keeper', proper full service and rebuild will be performed.
Normal carb service for one such as this that has sat for an extended period usually includes the utilization of an ultrasonic parts washer for the cleaning of the internal passages, jets and nozzles. An Ultrasonic washer electronically creates an "ULTRA" high frequency of waves that pass through the liquid parts cleaner...whatever it may be....and the resultant vibration causes the release of the normal nastiness that resides in these old carbs. They are the best device I've found to clear the tiny internal passages through the body of the carb that are extremely difficult to clean by normal means....compressed air and a spray can of choke/carb cleaner. Don't get me wrong....that technique and many others may provide the same result, but I guarantee it will not be accomplished with any less effort.
During the filming of this video I had no idea yet of the condition of the engine or even IF it was going to start and run. No reason to do a stellar rebuild on a carb that may NOT be put to use. One thing for sure though nothing done in this video is in vain, because if it is to get a thorough going over in the near future, it will be a much easier task to accomplish and most of the nastiest of the issues will in fact already be behind us.

Fortunately these type of old carburetors are quite simple. The newer Ford tractors in the 70's started using a Holly carb and they are still simple compared to an automotive 4 barrel, but they are more complicated than these. Thanks for chiming in Peter...and good morning to you sir.

Just recently purchased a 1960 oliver crawler. It has that same carb. I had mine apart to get tractor running. Got it home and in the shop but will have to go thru it again, new gaskets etc. Your video was very informative, thanks.

@@tractorman4461 Absolutely my Friend, You have a very diverse channel as well, I see you restore or have some old toys as well, I have close to 300 model tractors, mostly vintage ones, and trucks, cars and other household antiques, my old 1959 Lister d engine, 1949 Farmall Super A and two very old 3.5 hp Briggs mowers is my hart's point, love your Massey Harris, we have a lot of antique tractor show's in SA, all the old stationary engines, steam engines, Slattery harvest equipment and plows etc, is so awesome. I think old Slattery harvest machines are SA design and produced, not 100% sure of that

Hahahaha...she'd have had something to say I am sure !! The plan with this tractor is to be a donor to the older W Speed Patrol. Hopefully the power steering is in good shape, because THAT would be the perfect 'upgrade' with that old heavy front end. Combine that with the higher HP of the 45's power plant and it should really be a pleasure to grade the road with.

great video great information! I been using this baking soda blaster I built to blast the bowls clean since I dont have an ultrasonic cleaner for carbs. it works well but baking soda up your nose sucks! lol enjoyed the video!

Hahahaha....there's a country song in there somewhere Dave....LOL. I used soda blasting once. I had a free 40 pound bag. It worked quite well, but I wore a face mask. Actually once I got the machine set, my daughter took over the project.

@@davidshultz4986 You know I have a whole list of videos I've done on it to change the water pump, convert it to Petronix electronics and also servicing the Holly carb. I don't think I've edited any of them yet except the water pump. And actually its only making a gasket by hand FOR the water pump. I've worked on more than my share of these during my run with Wisconsin Air Cooled engines back in the 80's & 90's. Speaking of those straight blade screwdrivers, I like to use 'hollow ground' screwdrivers as they get a much more positive grip in the slot of the screw. I prefer the screwdrivers from a company that is perhaps better known in Cabinet Making and Gunsmithing,..these are the Grace Screwdrivers.

I have at least one of the old Wisconsin singles on the shelf and my Much Older Brother snagged the V-4 off our New Holland field hopper years ago. I love the sound of the V-4. We had the identical one on our New Holland baler too !! Yes, the hollow ground are desirable for sure. I have one or two but I have never heard of 'Grace' drivers. Hmmmm....I'm now on a quest.... My son recently turned me onto JIS screwdrivers for the Japanese bikes phillips screws. They grip those phillips like no other phillips I've used. I always use a hand impact with a standard phillips....not with the JIS. They grip so well, the shock of the impacet is not needed as much. Thanks for the informative comment buddy.

@@tractorman4461 Just a little ( ! ) side comment on those Wisconsin engines, I've been kicking myself for not taking a couple, or even one, on these venerable old V4's home with me. ( Ain't hind sight just wonderful? ) By the way if you have Lee Valley Tools ( Lee Valley.ca ) available to you on the 'Web' look them up, they carry these Grace screw drivers, and here in Canada at least, are considerably at a lower cost than Amazn.ca.

@@regsparkes6507 I'll be going back over this week to help him time and install the newly rebuilt original magneto on his old '37 Massey Harris Challenger. I'll see how hard it'll be to get to it. But I THINK he may still have the original book on the engine. One uncle had a Wisconsin twin on his smaller baler, but it is long gone.

Yes, I have a cousin at the local NAPA that runs down a lot of my parts but I usually just go through them and get them running before I go for the actual rebuild kits. If I keep the tractor, then it'll get the whole she bang mechanically. Thanks Casey for the heads up. I do get most of my automotive parts at the local O O O Reilly's though.

I have used some steel shot or nuts in some old carb float bowls to remove rust with a bit of carb cleaner, never had an ultra sonic parts wash! Always worked great! When it comes to floats, i check them in a small bucket with gas, let them sit over night if they sink, there is a leak! Soldering them is fun!, Is there a part 2? The video ended quite short!😂🤣😂🤣

Actually this is what I cut out of the 'first start' video because I thought this could stand alone. Marvel's are on thousands of pieces of equipment out there. If it'd been left in the original video, I would have had to cut half to three quarters of this out to keep the video short. At the end of this video, it goes out and goes right on the tractor for the fire up !!

I try to not change the original parts until its the last resort. Nowadays there are so many cheaply built foreign parts that uses poor materials on the contacts. I've had several sets that literally destroyed themselves in hours. I'm sure though that there are some that are better than others, but I always clean points with a points file and reinstall. When I DO end up needing replacements I try to make sure they are high quality American made components. I'm lucky to have a good counterman that's good at finding what I need. Sometimes you get a counterman that if its not in their computer base, you are out of luck and he won't do anything beyond to help you. You gotta ask around to find the right guy to help you. Of course in an emergency use anything you can find and you may get lucky with a good set. Unfortunately I do not have part numbers for the Allis's because I've managed to keep the old stuff in service. You might find a Facebook Allis group that will be able to steer you in the right direction. Wendell, im having a slight issue with the MS off of my 2n. Fully ultrasonically cleaned it. Got it back together. Runs pretty good. Idle mixture is still pretty rich, even with the idle mixture screw turned all the way in. Im going to check to see if the carb halves are not warped. im thinking that the transfer hole is not sealing properly through the gasket, affecting the mixing on the idle circuit. Does this sound about right?

I had a 4000 Ford with a similar issue. Mine turned out to be a warped bowl that was easily repaired by gently sanding on a 6'' x 48'' belt sander with a fine grit belt and then installing a new gasket. Its very difficult to troubleshoot your specific issue without hands on, but know that many times, I have to adjust them, work them a while and readjust or clean again to get where I want them. On a side note, I have two Massey Harris 44's that will not even start with their own carbs on them. But switching carbs between the tractors make both of them start and run almost perfectly !! I've not figured that out yet. So what I'm basically saying, we have very old and worn machines and sometimes it just takes a bunch of fiddling to get them going good. Good luck and sorry I am not giving you a definite answer.

What would you say would be a good baseline for the two adjustment screws ? For example chainsaws and many other things are usually all the way in lightly seated and then 1.5 to 2 turns out

On Marvel Sheblers and Zeniths on tractors I always start out 1 1/4 turn off seat. Then go from there. This seems to always be in the ballpark. If not there’s still something else with the carb giving a problem.

Yesterday was trying to get the main and idle jet out of a Marvel Schebler TSX 241-B that has set for years and years. I stopped trying to force the main out and left it, the screwdriver slot is ok but messed up the slot on the idle. I had tried soaking in penetrating oil etc but no luck. Have you had any luck getting a damaged jet out of one of these? Thanks for a great channel

I use an ultra sonic parts washer and the strongest version of Berrymans ChemDip carb cleaner. That usually breaks the bond on the jets. Your's being buggered up sounds like a real challenge though. I keep a set of screwdrivers specifically for carb work. It's important to have perfectly shaped tips to fit the square cut slots. And I exert as much pressure as I can put on them to break them loose.

So i did get mine running today .not sure what actually did the trick .i took the carb apart again .i did make one adjustment on it .i loosened the springs that controlled the flaps if that makes any sense .i noticed the flaps didnt close all the way and the large flap was stiff.and i noticed that coukd adjust this by loosing the screw that took pressure of the spring and made the flap more flexable or moveable
