Hey guys I know this video is probably not the best that we've put out for sure it's a little rushed we kind of had a very busy holiday weekend and me and the doc put this together real quick I hope you enjoy what we have done here I promise better next time

If the engine has what looks like a steel plate and big bolts/rivets on the side of the starter (right hand side) then it's a WD, the WD45 has has a chamfered engine block at the front and back corners under the head and a big flat knob in the middle (must have been a casting sprue or boss for some other attachments). Do an image search on google for WD and WD-45 and focus on the images showing the right hand side engine block casting features. Also a casting bump difference just above the steering shaft where it goes below the implement beam attachment.

Allis Chalmers developed the two clutch system in conjunction with their small round baler. Each time to finish and wrap a bale the tractor motion had to stop, but the PTO had to remain running. Farmers did not take to stopping, shifting out of gear to stop the tractor and then letting the clutch back out to run the PTO and finish the bale, then engage the clutch again and shift back into gear to move move on. Hence one clutch to stop tractor while PTO remained running, the other clutch like a normal one to stop everything. Vermeer later copied the Allis Chalmers baler idea to make the big roll balers of today.

The hand clutch was a way to give it live PTO not for constant use.

With that straight shift lever it appears to be a WD; the '45s began production in 1953. Dad had both , but the '45 was definitely a cut above the older WD. Keep the videos coming on all of your older tractors. Ah, the days of my youth.

The AC WD-45s are solid tractors, especially if you get one with or can add a 3 point hitch. My folks had a base WD (the one you have looks like a standard WD) on the farm when I was a kid and it was most often the sickle bar mower tractor because it did not have a 3 point (and the sickle mower matched the hitch it had). The Ferguson TO-35 that we had got a lot more use because of the 3 point but it was about 10 HP lower than the AC WD (TO-35s have about 10hp more than Ford N series). It was used to chop corn and do some plowing until an Oliver 880 and later an International 806 with a five bottom plow arrived at the farm. The AC WD-45 added another 10hp on top of the base WD so that is a great option and would have matched the Oliver 880 -- I keep watching local sales of the WD-45 but I don't have a need above the Ferguson TO-35 I have at the moment. My folks had an early AC small round baler (same size as the square bales) that probably worked with the WD they had but they went back to square bales (MF and JD run by the Oliver 880, the Ferguson TO-35 in a pinch, and the 806 when the Oliver broke down with the corn picker on it). The other reason the WD only had 'one task' when I was a kid was because it was a tricycle setup and I heard a lot of stories about the hired help that was killed rolling a similar tricycle tractor taking too sharp of a turn at too high of speed when my father was a kid. So the AC was always treated with extra caution.

They are super strong and reliable. I've had one for the last 12 years. It has never given me one problem. They can be a handful to use and dangerous in the wrong hands. Pay attention be safe and enjoy.

For someone who can't afford a compact utility tractor these things are about the best bang for your buck. Its small enough to do yard work and big enough to handle most big chores you might need done.

They are tough old Tractors, that is all My Grandpa on My Mom's side of the Family ever wanted. The front end loader makes them steer kinda hard if it doesn't have power steering and it probably doesn't.

I wish I had one for baling hay. My grandfather had one and it was awesome on a small square baler.

I had a WD 45 that on a Allis all crop combine perfect match. You would ride that hand clutch all day. And that hand clutch with a loader is a must. It let's you easie up to what you are loading.

There are shims in the clutch assm. If it needs tightening up just remove a few.
@AirborneRenegade3 жыл бұрын
My WD45 has the same problem with the clutch slipping out of gear. I tore it down and it found that the problem was play in the left connector. I’ll say yours is in pretty dang good shape to need that little work, but I knew mine was locked up when I got it.

Guys we used one for years. The hand clutch should be pulled back during normal operation. The only time you use it is to stop forward movement with a pto implement.

The straight gear shifter makes it a WD. Made from 1948 to 1953. 45's started in late '53 to '57. There are shims in the hand clutch to set the over center engagement. Should only be used when you want pto and hydraulics with Trans in gear. Hand clutch tends to drag when cold.
@jongirolami49783 жыл бұрын
The very early WD45's had straight shifters, AC used up left over stock when the WD production ended.
@deanmeyer18153 жыл бұрын
@@jongirolami4978 actually, it was the opposite, late wd's had curved shifter when they changed from the spur gear transmissions to angle cut gears. They didn't have the gear whine of the earlier ones.

@oldfarmjunk1013 жыл бұрын
Dave, That is a WD not a WD45, you should know the difference. The hand clutch looks like just some looseness everywhere. You could adjust the linkage turnbuckle at the bottem of the leaver, would help some. We had one that the setscrew came loose inside. Richard

I was just going off of serial number and if I'm reading the serial number right it's 54 which would be the first year of the 45 right to

@@CrazyDEquipment WD45 1953 started at 146607 by my book. Your tractor has place for a mag and a stright gearshift leaver, signes of a WD

I was just going to post the same thing. I don't know what the price difference between a WD and a WD45 is these days, but if I was the buyer I'd think WD unless someone could prove that it's been rebuilt with WD45 crater pistons and bigger crankshaft.
@jasondagenhart12533 жыл бұрын
Another way to to really know if it is a wd or wd45 is the wd motor will have a big plate on the right side of the block where as the wd45 does not have that plate
