Join me, my Jazzmaster, and my Two Rock Studio Pro Plus 35 on an hour long journey as I critique and explain my own improvising on "Back Where It All Begins" by the Allman Brothers Band. In the first part of the video (1:04), I'll share with you behind-the-scenes footage of one of my bands rehearsing this tune in the studio in preparation for a gig. In the second part, (8:43) I show you the scales, modes, arpeggios, and rhythmic approaches that I was using while playing . We also talk about the more subtle aspects of group improvisation and jamming as a team.

Amar, you have no idea how interesting and helpful that was for me! Do you remember when you first started if you learned the major scale or minor scale first and what would you recommend today with hindsight? During your narration explanations, you seem to mesh the major scale with the chord tones underneath and it sounded great as well as makes sense. Its a daunting task trying to recall scales, the underlying chord tones as well as the arpeggios as a song progresses. I guess what I'm trying to ask is, would your learning recommendations be different than the way you were taught? thanks again, that was really informative and helpful...Bret

Hi Bret! Really glad to hear that the video was interesting & helpful. I recommend learning the major scale in all 5 positions in all 12 keys. With every new key, it gets easier and logic of the fretboard will really start to unlock as you go. It was a bit daunting to recall scales and chord tones at first for me, but I had a great teacher who told me to just focus on one idea at a time. For example, I would spend time getting very comfortable with chord tones of A7 and A mixolydian in each position. Then I would move onto another key, chord, or scale. I’d still recommend breaking down your goals into manageable chunks, it makes learning guitar more rewarding when you can progress by earning smalls wins.

Besides the humble and informative lesson here, this looks like a fantastic practice space. I especially dig the wood throughout the room. One fun thing about traveling around and playing with various musicians is playing in all the cozy and unique practices spaces. And totally agree on guitarists to hold back on their pentatonic scales!

Amar you have great taste. Alman Bros are mighty. Listen real careful though and nail those minor third tweaks and articulate your phrases properly - believe me man attention to the little things will lift your playing up a notch or six.

another thought...why don't you learn Dicky Betts' lines in Mellisa? That way you would have a solid grounding in targeting the exact pitch of every note and getting the legato exactly correct - while not ruining the feel :) Believe me - all the great players have practised all of the little things to perfection.

Question for you, during the "Secondary Progression For the Guitar Solo" at 27:40 in, what are you playing over that? Are you "chasing" the changing chord positions or are you staying in the E Major scale?

amarguitar I had too many guitars and the profit I made on it after having it 16 years was too much to turn down. Still I miss it - mainly for the awesome neck.
