Track 4: One Way Out (same version that appears on Live At Fillmore East)
This is the closing night of The Fillmore East, a very special show that has flirted with an official release for over 30 years.
"The tape begins with Graham introducing the Allman Brothers Band as one of the best he's heard according to his untrained ears, and the band embark on a show that packs a lot into an eighty minute set. The opening numbers show some restraint and not until "In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed" does the band get into an elongated jam session reaching over twelve minutes. The show ends with a twenty minute "Whipping Post" and a seventeen minute encore "You Don't Love Me"/ "Final Serenade" where Duane Allman quotes Handel's "Joy To The World". "

I'm loving lots of (male) voices, but I adore just four of them. And my favourite depends on who is akshuly singin'. These four are Gregory L. Allman, John Lennon, Peter Tosh and Frank Zappa. And then there are the acrobats on vocals. They were great when they were young. Their names are Robert Plant and David Lee Roth. Thanks to GOD, that they all were taped at their peak, so they are immortal...

+rd f Saying he was the best slide guitarist ever is forgetting the other side of him. He just was an all around natural. The guitar was like an extension of his arms and hands. @kevinlcpc
@kevinlcpc 8 жыл бұрын
Joe is all right. I have seen him with the James Gang and several times with the Eagles. His slide is just slide. He doesn't even play open E. Duane was a master of his guitars. He could play jazz (Herbie Mann and others), he could play rock (Layla and other love songs), he could play blues (goes without saying), he probably would have learned to play classical if he lived to be 25. He was what anyone would have called a natural. Just listen to Little Martha. Yeah, he did it with Dickie, but the incredible parts are all him. No one has been able to duplicate it. If you listen to him on Dickie's In Memory of Elizabeth Reed, or on Boz Scaggs Loan Me a Dime, he was the best. But as Clapton said, his playing on Wilson Pickett's Hey Jude was the best rock and roll guitar ever.
@antonymscalia3924
@antonymscalia3924 8 жыл бұрын
Kevin Davis Wow, you have great taste. "Little Martha" is a delight. It has so much going on for a simple instrumental composition. Duane and his guitar were one. Another one who became one with his instrument (in this instance, the bass of the brilliant Jaco Pastorius). Dammit Skydog, why'd you have to like riding motorcyles??

Saw Gregg and the boys play this at a free show at my high school in '76. Gregg and Cher were in Buffalo while he was in rehab (after the feds busted his ass) and for community service, he did a private show for the boys at Canisius High School, a private Jesuit school. The curtain opened and Gregg was at the piano, leaned into the microphone and said, "My name is Gregg. Today I am your teacher." And then broke into this. Epic. Pure epic.

It's always hard for me to hear people comparing Duane to anyone. Those that do never have heard him live. There is no comparison. I have heard Clapton, Page, Beck, Hendrix, Vaughn, BB, the Stones, etc. live. Most more than twice. Duane live was an experience like no other. He should have been with Gregg and Berry, and Butch or Jai. He was able to shine when he played alone or as a studio musician (LAYLA! LOAN ME A DIME! HEY JUDE! etc.) He was the biggest loss to music, think of it, he was only just starting out. Leave the comparing alone, and listen to the live recordings. Most of the leads were him, not Dicky.

In the 1970's, somebody slipped me the cassette of the Allman Brothers, Live at the Fillmore East. It was my 1st introduction to Southern Rock! I loved it so much that I saw them live, about 15x's! When Gregg does that growl-MMmm😍! This band was always tight, on time & Duane & Dickie playing off each other was insane! These Legends will live on forever through their great music. Always a thrill to see them live! I know Gregg, Duane, Burch, etc., are rocking up in heaven. Thank you guys! Much respect & LOVE!💜 R.I.P.

Had the distinct pleasure of hearing the Allman Brothers live on three occasions, once at an outdoor concert at Chapel Hill, In Knoxville, but the best was September 1971 just weeks before Duane got killed. It was in a converted movie house in Huntington, L.I. NewYork. They played for two hours straight until a little short guy in a suit whispered something in Duane's ear. He went to his mike and said, "Hey, we'd like to play all night for you guys, but we just got an offer we can't refuse, so this will be our last song." I have listened to "One Way Out" more times than I can remember, and it gets better with every listen. When Duane played with Eric Clapton on Layla, it was clear who the better guitarist was. Just listen to "Tell the Truth" and judge for yourself.

A local blues society here has a long list of "forbidden songs", and this tops the list. "THATS NOT R E A L BLUES". After every song I wanted to play at any open blues jams being on THE LIST, I refused to hit myself in the head with a hammer until I dumb down enough to "properly " play GOT LOVE IF YOU WANT IT, BABE.

You are so right, Taylor; those who lived through that era were incredibly lucky and blessed to see popular music go from AM to FM, from Bobby Vinton's "Blue Velvet" to Yes' "Close to the Edge," from Lonnie Mack's "Memphis" to the Allmans and Claptons, the Lennon and McCartneys and everything in between. What a great ride it was, and thanks to the proliferation of digital technology, it still it.

First time I heard this I was upstairs in a room that had its own outside staircase. The joint had gone around a couple times, and I was thinking the words went "might be old man, I don't know." I thought like somebody's father could be pissed off down at the bottom of that staircase. If it was my old man, he'd kick my ass sideways. The guitars were blue paranoid with solos chasing at each other. I love this hard blues.

My all time favorite band and song. I named my ranch ONE WAY OUT. I have about 8 miles of trails through the woods and each one named after some of my favorite ABB songs and albums. I can’t tell you how many times me and about 6 friends went to see them live. Talk about great music these guys are the ticket. If beauty was a second they’d be an hour. Thanks for the memories guys

Many people (rightfully so) consider Jimi the best guitarist ever. But I would argue that Duane was his equal. Not in the exact shocking bravado, and raw improvisational wizardry of Hendrix, but in the calculated and soulful rhythm that made the Allman Brothers one of the top rock bands in American history.
@bryansimmons4550
@bryansimmons4550 2 жыл бұрын
Hendrix couldn't shine Duane's shoes when it comes to actually playing the guitar. Duane was far superior in technical ability, and he didn't use gimmicks, feedback, noise, or showmanship. Duane's playing was all the show he ever needed or wanted.

No better band ever. Legendary music, legendary albums, legendary concerts. I'm now in my 60's. Listened to lots of music, went to lots of concerts. Still, the best concert I EVER saw was ABB in Cleveland (Muddy Waters opened for them) at the Richfield Coliseum in 1975. No BS, no fancy light show, no pyrotechnics, just hours and hours of music. Have seen them a few times since then. Took my wife, took my son. It's like a piece of me died when Gregg left us. RIP, your music will live forever.
