Allowable or acceptable variance in tread depth wear on AWD or 4WD vehicles or the drive axle of a 2WD car
& How to reset the TPM system on a Q50
Have you had a flat that isn’t repairable or had a blown tire that now replacement on an AWD or 4WD vehicle? The dilemma is do I replace all 4 tire or get a used tire? Are the stores pushing you to get all new 4 tires?
Well you don’t need to buy all 4 new tires. Access what currently have, see if the life on the treads is still significant enough, then instead buy the exact same used tire with the following rules in mind listed below in Item 1.
In this video I’ll share with you:
1) What I found to be the Allowable or acceptable variance in tread depth wear from tire to tire on AWD or 4WD vehicles
2) How to reset the TPM system after it a flat tire incident
This applies to the drive axle of a 2WD vehicle as well.
Item: 1:
The safe rule to follow in all vehicles, both tires of an axle or all 4 tires on AWD and 4WD vehicles:
+/- 2/32 tire tread depth or +/- 0.5% difference in rolling circumference
OR
+/- 0.25" difference in rolling circumference (tighter tolerance)
AND
all tires need to be same brand and same model because for any given size of tire, tire height or rolling circumference will vary manufacture to manufacture.
LASTLY
at 2/32 tread depth, tire is worn out
Item 2: How to reset the TPM system on a Q50
Simply drive the car for a few minutes after the repair and the vehicle will recognize the updated pressure built up in the repaired tire and it will automatically reset it self and remove the warning.
Please note, this is what I found, and I what I did when I had a tire blow out. Use the information I presented at your own risk or follow what a mechanic is telling you and do your own research.
Always
1) carry a tire pressure gauge and pump that you can use when you need to air up your tires…you never know when you might need it.
2) always keep the spare pressured up…check once a year.

don’t get the cheap ones, they are not reliable and don’t get the battery operated ones…battery will affect reading and will be most likely dead when you need it.
