Seems like a good adapter for not a lot of money. A pity for the APFC poor performance on 230V. But I still don't get why manufacturer are still so hellbent on not providing USB C 5V only ports. If people say that the device is not charging rapdly even if they're using the USB C Amazon (or any other maker for that matter) could very well tell them to RTFM. Liked the in depth review as usual!

Excellent round up of these Amazon Basics adapters, you always do an amazing job with your reviews. It is good that Amazon Basics cost less for what you get. And if the 100W adapter is just as good as the Anker, why not get the Amazon Basics instead? Seems like a no brainer decision to me! Now, thats not to say that there arn't better adapters out there. For example, I think Bassious is still holding the king spot, mainly because it does have active PFC for the 5V signal, and it provides that 100+ watts with great gusto and great efficiency, and thats what you want IMO. Just don't do what Marty Mcfly did with his AMP power supply, you remember what happened to the speakers right? Its going to be a long time before you ever utilize the full 500 watts from that new power supply unit. Right now I think largest USB power adapters is around what 250-watts?

Yeah, I need to get more into the details, the USB PD specification alone is really dry and over 1000 pages. But basically lots of handshaking and then constant handshaking or the power gets turned off. They pass quite a lot of data back and forth.

At 7:54 you mentioned the power factor correction requiring an extra watt. I found that interesting. Consumers only pay for real power, not apparent power, right? Would that extra watt be a net loss for the consumer then? I assume that given two adapters with identical efficiencies but different power factors, the one with a higher power factor wins, but where would you draw the line if one has better efficiency, but the other has better power factor?
@AllThingsOnePlace
@AllThingsOnePlace Жыл бұрын
Yeah, the extra watt is an estimate, as adapters get larger the power factor circuit generally uses a little more. There is a line where it really makes up for the power consumed though. Based on some rough estimates and using a boost topology it is a loss at 10 watts, about even at 50 watts, and then a reasonable gain at and above 100 watts.

what do you think about buying these wall adapters like the baseus and getting a short 1.5ft extension cable, instead of just getting the baseus desktop adapter version so removing the cable is an option? do the extension cable qualities vary a lot too in safety and efficiency?
@AllThingsOnePlace
@AllThingsOnePlace Жыл бұрын
Using a short extension cord is fine, the current on the AC side is much lower so something like a power adapter plugged in on that side will not significantly effect efficiency and performance unless the cord is really bad (not copper, obviously not thick enough), there are some fakes out there but in general any cord with a safety rating on the wire should be fine. Any electrician would probably err on the side of caution and say never ever ever because everything is unsafe in some situation. Impossibility of control of variables The reality of it is these actually can be more safe not dangling off the wall and potentially exposing the mains electrical pins as they sit half in the wall half out. I use a short extension cord for mine because it doesn't stay in the wall socket. Your mileage may vary and obviously always at your own risk. Anything the manufacturer says not to do...they basically all say they aren't liable for anything that happens.

Are these power adapters, e.g. 65W AmazonBasic one, safe enough for continuous operation setup? I have a stand with a hub integrated, and I am using a Ipad Mini 6. I want this setup as desktop replacement while connected with the standard stuff (24''display, mouse and keyboard). If I leave it plugged in while using the the Mini for lets say half a day, will the power adapter last? I have my concerns because they are so small. Any alternatives in the style of notebook power adapter, albeit bulky yet made for continuous operation?
@AllThingsOnePlace
@AllThingsOnePlace Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I think your estimate is correct if pushing the watt level. These small adapters aren’t great for continuous operation. If it is over rated a decent amount then it is fine. Say the whole setup uses 45 watts continuously a 100 watt adapter is probably good. A larger laptop adapter is probably still better.
