In 1994, the Budapest Agreement was signed, according to which Ukraine, at the suggestion of the West, renouned nuclear weapons and heavy bombers. And the West, represented by the United States and Great Britain, acted as the guarantor of its territorial integrity, promised support in the event of an attack on Ukraine. Refusal of nuclear weapons effectively left Ukraine vulnerable against Russian aggression. In 2014, Russia annexed the Ukrainian Crimea and part of Donbass, and in 2022 it is attacking Ukraine, bombing its cities and villages, killing Ukrainians. And now the West does not want to give Ukraine enough necessary weapons, although basically these weapons are not new, they are being replaced with more modern ones.

Of course they want the war prolonged, it is much more profitable for the defense contractors that way. We could have sent overwhelming support to the Ukrainians immediately after the invasion which would have ended the war in months. Instead, we hid behind the excuse of not wanting to "escalate" the conflict. Dragging out the war as long as possible bleeds far more money and resources out of Russia, makes their military technology look worse and western tech look better, bolsters the export market for USA-made weapons while crushing demand for Russian gear. All this at the cost of Ukrainian lives. It is wildly unethical, but then when has statecraft ever been an ethical game?

After I phoned my representative about something once that I was angry about and said, truthfully, that I have always voted for, donated to, and canvassed for her but wouldn't do any of that again because of how she voted. I don't know if that's enough, but since it was speaking for more than just my vote, it might have been. She changed her position right after that. You might as well try it. It only costs a few minutes. Phoning has more of an effect, but emails are quicker.

@williamstrips30784 ай бұрын
Only maybe 10% of the money leaves the US. 90% stays in the US to replenish ammo that was sent to Ukraine. It is also used to replace the equipment Ukraine recieves. At first the US sent the old ammuniton (artillery shells and HIMARS rockets), which was close to becoming outdated, to Ukraine. The Abrams, Bradleys and Strykers sent to Ukraine are all older models that were taken from storage and repaired. The Ukraine war is actually creating production capacity and jobs in the US. The old shells and rockets are being replaced by new more modern systems.

They haven't built up their military enough. It's been hard to believe it was necessary. Now they're scrambling. Incidently, what both Finland and Estonia have given Ukraine accounts for 1.5% of the GDP, and they are building up their military like crazy. The Netherlands is helping Estonia with this. Finland is not allowing any Russians to buy property there any more because of national security concerns. What happened to Ukraine has opened their eyes to Putin's threat. In 2019 he gave a speech saying "They did not listen to us. They must listen now." His inferiority complex at living in a less important country than Russia used to be drives him crazy. It's hopeless, though, with China as strong as it is now, Russia will never be very important again. Texas, California, and New York all have economies bigger than Russia. They are only worth paying attention to because they are aggressive and dangerous.

NATO's senior military officer, Adm. Rob Bauer, said that the price for one 155mm shell had risen from 2,000 euros ($2,171) at the start of Russia's full-scale attack to 8,000 euros ($8,489.60) today.
@JonathanLoganPDX4 ай бұрын
Several reasons for the differences in price. First is that when there is no war no one's buying them so the ones being sold are from stock and they have a lower price because they're trying to move them and get rid of them, whereas when demand is high the price is higher. Second is the fact that there are multiple different kinds of rounds and so the price differentials between the different kinds of rounds make sense, so the more sophisticated and Powerful 155 mm rounds cost more then the Cannonball Style. And finally, the fact of the matter is that there is some war profiteering going on and for that there is no excuse!

Do you think before you say stuff like this? Unless we massively ramp up our military support for Ukraine, the war ends when Russia decides to stop. Ukraine cannot stop the war without handing their country over to Russia, and we cannot stop the war in any non-military way. We might be able to pause it for a while, but that will have the very unfortunate side-effect of strengthening Russia's hand making them even harder to stop when they attack again in the future. Demanding peace now is equivalent to strengthening Russia's hands, which is very dangerous given their current behavior. As dangerous as Nazi Germany was under WWII.
