Do I regret buying the 16” M1 Pro MacBook Pro? Is the new MacBook Pro worth buying?
✅ CLICK HERE for one FREE MONTH of monday.com: hey.monday.com/tgt
I just spent 2 weeks with the 16” MacBook Pro and it has been a completely different experience than what I expected - I also ran into one issue that I hope Apple can fix with a macOS update.
When it comes down it, I watched the Apple event, I saw the specs and all the claims Apple made, and then I immediately ordered 14” and a 16” M1 Pro base models with 16GB of unified memory, because I knew that for most of the people who are interested in this type of a laptop, these would work great.
At the same time, I also wanted to see what fully spec‘d out M1 Max versions of both can do, and those just got to the studio.
But today is about my experience with the 16” M1 Pro, with a 10-core CPU, 16-core GPU and 16GB of unified memory - and I gotta tell you, I think this might be my favorite laptop.

So here we are a year and a month later and I bought the same 16” machine except for a 1TB drive. The opening experience is second to none. That immediate experience of seeing the screen as soon as an image hit it just made me smile from ear to ear. Don’t get me wrong, my prior M1 13” MBP was fantastic and I’m keeping it for travel use. But this 16” is my daily driver and it’s beyond awesome. I also MineCraft with my kids and dang this 16” machine is awesome with the rendering and fluidity. This really is about as close as I can image to the perfect laptop. If only the weight could be reduced a little more, then Apple would have the perfect laptop, bar none.

I traded my 2019 16" base model and bought it on the education site so after tax the base model 16" M1 MacBook Pro came to about 1200. I keep waiting for it to start burning my lap, but it doesn't happen! Still have to use a dongle for regular USB, but it's good to have magsafe back!

Got the 16" base model M1 Pro and I'm absolutely satisfied. It's the most powerful laptop I ever had, even to that level that I will never use that full potential. Which is why I took the M1 Pro base model instead of the M1 Max version. I recently had around 20 apps open at the same time (around 25 safari-tabs, Spotify, 2-3 Apple-Arcade games in the background, Steam, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, a couple of light-apps like Notes, Maps, etc.) and the CPU usage was at around 15%... this thing is bananas and it never got warm or anything. PLUS the battery is a monster.. I'd say if you're not a heavy professional user, who needs at least 32 GB of RAM or more, and who doesn't need to connect the Macbook to 3 additional 6K + one additional 4K display at the same time, you will be perfectly fine with the 16" M1 Pro base model; heck even the 14" base model with the binned M1 Pro chip should be enough for 95% of world's population

Great review. A question: You referenced that the built in HDMI port in my new MacBook Pro 16 with the M1 Pro chip is only 2.0, not 2.1, so only supports up to 60, not 120 on an external display. Could I hook up an external 120 refresh rate display to my new MacBook Pro 16 with the M1 Pro chip thru one of the 3 Thunderbolt ports instead of the dedicated HDMI port, and then maybe use a 2.1 HDMI adaptor in order to get the 120 refresh that is in the laptop up on the 120 external display? I am not a techie person, and am new to Apple, so have begun a learning curve, but I do want to at some point get a much larger external display so this might be relevant. Thanks so much for the review, and if you can take a few moments, for the reply. Thumbs up!

I ordered both the 14" and 16" hoping I'd be willing to step down in size for better portability (My last machine was the Intel 16" from 2019). These are both amazing laptops, but I could not get over my palms partially hanging off the smaller rest of the 14" model and it's trackpad being so much smaller than the 16". In fact, side by side the 14" trackpad is smaller than the 13" MBP (It appears this is due to the full size row of function keys pushing down into the trackpad's real estate). I guess that Intel 16 inches got good to me over the last couple of years because I just couldn't go back now and ended up returning the 14" MBP. I like using the insanely massive "Minority Report" trackpad on the 16" as there is 0 chance I miss any gestures or even have to look down, I just wave my fingers around and what I want to happen just does lol. There were a few more minor benefits that swayed me as well like the sheer increase in screen real-estate (so much better running apps side by side) as well as even louder/better sound w/ more responsive bass (14" is no slouch either, but man this new 16" sounds amazing!). Lastly, the 16" base model has the full M1 Pro chip at 10/16 cores vs. the 14" at 8/14 cores. If you do some algebra, you can control for the SSD size costs and isolate the CPU upgrade cost to realize that upgrading the base 14" MBP to the exact same specs as the 16" MBP would cost an additional $200 (You can't configure it that way, but to keep an apples to apples comparison on the SSD at 512GB storage between both models). So that means the larger form factor with bigger display, bigger trackpad, 140W GaN Charger, louder/better audio and beefier cooling comes at a realized $300 (and full pound of weight) premium over the 14" MBP (Well $250 for myself using USG pricing) so I couldn't justify not going all in lol and "buying it right" haha. I've had this guy just over two weeks now and I absolutely LOVE IT! For all the reasons given, you can also tack on some "member berries" (It reminds me so much of my first Mac, an Aluminum PowerBook G4!), MagSafe, Actual ports, Split Thunderbolt bus (Good lord, file transfer from one HDD or SSD across to another is crazy faster as opposed to the Intel 16" MBP that shared Thudnerbolt lanes!) and lastly, and quite importantly, the noticeably better build quality! Seriously, this thing feels solid (The giant screen does not flex at all due to its increased heft and there are way fewer sharp edges to cut yourself on or ding up/scrape too). Highly recommended, notch be damned lol!

I bought my last MacBook pro in late 2013 and it's still usable, with 4gb ram, it's painfully slow, I actually don't know where it is now in my house lol, I've been exclusively using z fold 3 for last 2 month, I occasionally use iPad pro 12.9 2020 model for photo editing. So these new macbook definitely caught my attention, I'm thinking of picking the 16inch model get 1tb and be done for next 7 years. I agree on display quality and sound, I played around with the 16inch model, 14 inch looked considerably smaller next to 16. I couldn't believe how loud and crisp the sound quality was, and for the display yes definitely best display on a laptop, but coming from z fold 3, I think I would still chose it's display over anything else.

Always great content can be found right here! Good advice on the memory upgrade. I've seen compelling evidence that it's a benefit when working with large files like pano's, focus stacks or HDR images in Lightroom and that it greatly improves the performance of adjustment brushes. The 16 gb was a bit laggy and the 32 gb was as smooth as silk. My point of reference is a in-depth comparison ArtIsRight did. Cheers and thanks for the F1 footage!

Still within the return window and debating if I should go for a BTO 64GB for ‘longevity’ - photo editing and some light-ish video editing will be my usage scenario as well as using as my daily driver. Any thoughts on the 32 v 64 argument for my use case appreciated! Thanks

I don't think you need a full 64 gigs of Ram for what you're describing. But don't take my word for it, Max Tech did a video on this exact comparison and unless you're running 3d renders or very intensive Apps 32 is most likely more than sufficient.

Hey, I recently upgraded from the 13" M1 macbook with touchbar to the new 16" macbook pro (without touchbar). I have to say, it's a lot easier to use your computer when there's no touch bar. With touchbar, you have to double tap to change the volume, or change the brightness, and it wasn't fully optimized with many of the apps I was using. I much prefer the regular old buttons for volume/brightness. It's just seamless. So no, I don't think you will miss the touchbar! But I will say, the laptop doesn't look as modern now. It's sooo much thicker and heavier than I expected.

@@MAYBEE90 Thanks for weighing in, M! Appreciate your thoughts. I think you made some good points on the extra taps to change volume/brightness, and not all apps are optimized for the touchbar. I'm still on my 2015 macbook, so I kinda wanted to try the touchbar. But the 16" just checks so many boxes, I might go for it instead. Thanks again, M!

I found this combo perfect for me i just ordered the 16" with 24 core Max & 32gb ram & 2tb ssd :) My laptop for the next 3+yrs and optioned up enough im fairly sure i wont regret it down the road. Definitely an investment, but with this power and battery life its worth it for the long run i think

The two things that bother me are: the memory leak issue which I hope is fixed in an OS update and that the fix doesn't limit performance; and second, the display is so close but why could they not make it 3840x2400 (16:10) so that when watching UHD content the display gives you one-to-one at 3840x2160 with the upper 240 for the notch area. Honestly, the second one bothers me more as there's no way that can be fixed with an OS or application update. I mean, they were so close...

There’s a thread on Macrumors about the trackpad having intermittent problems with tap-to-click. It won’t always register. It also seems to affect scrolling and dragging. I’ve had to turn this off and resort to mechanically clicking the trackpad. This isn’t limited to the new M1 Pro and Max, so it’s probably the OS.

Upgrade to 32gb ram if you're doing any kind of video editing, 3D, etc. If you do not have enough ram, the macOS will start using your ssd as a temporary ram (it's called swap memory). Do not let the macbook use swap memory often, as it'll destroy the life of your ssd (ssd can only write a fixed amount of data before they fail). Maybe go for 14" instead of 16" to save some money. You can always use a good external monitor if you need bigger screen.

I dont think u need that. I will use mine for maya and i hope the next itteration will have full support for apple silicon. Regardless there r many videos on how this unified memory isnt needed the same way as ram is. Most 3d software is still cpu rendered and the unified memory is used much less/core than ram. Its also ”only” 10 cores, not 8 with 16 threads! If u r a 3d proffesional doing 4k renders with insane scenes u r probably on a quadro workstation anyway! This is a laptop. If the basemodel isnt enough u cant buy laptops anyway. The diminishing returns on updating apple products has never bern clearer. When u need more power, which i probably never will - i would rather invest in a desktop or the upcoming mac pro. As an all in one solution/learning/student pc this thing cant be beat. If u spend 4,5k on one imagine what monitors/workstation/software u can invest in! From the videos i have seen, and yes there r real artists/developers testing these in other aspects than video editing which hardly is the use case for more than 1% of users. Some tests i have seen there is no difference at all! At most 20%. That the ssd would break with ”ramcache” i find unlikely. I have used my small quadro workstation like that for years! Spend the extra money on apple care instead! As always on mac vs pc its really has (up to apple silicon that is) always been the unix system and integration that made them powerful. As soon as 3d party software is more adapted these things will fly - for now having 64g unified memory is just a waste for almost everything outside of full time production companies tasks… the gpu has 16 cores. Alone. With 16 unified memory - it will be more than enough - and is hardly used at all outside of real expensive gpu render software which u cant afford anyway….
