It's called overflow. When all that snow lands on the ice, the weight of the snow pushes down' on the ice and water comes up through the cracks. Can get your machine stuck real quick. Thanks for the video. I just bought a 96 polaris and haven't got to try it yet.

I'm with you Russell on the snowmobile. When I use to visit my friend at Lake Tahoe (in the late 80's) the loud engine and fumes from both the snowmobile and the Jet Ski in summer were a bit overwhelming. I heard they had to regulate the Jet Ski at Tahoe since they were emptying 25 percent of their fuel-oil mix unburned into the Lake. Enjoyed seeing Ray again though with his snowmobile!

BTW…you can gently slice the edges of a chop to stop it from “curling” while frying…and yes pork chops are fried in any skillet, preferably cast iron. Since you don’t like onions, to add extra flavor buy a shallot. It will add that flavor without “onion taste.”😁💙🦋

Not sure 20 minutes on an OLD sled on a groomed trail is a good test. To me a sled might be worth considering if it gave you the ability to get around to places on the property that your ATV can't go. Or, made your weekly town run easier during the winter. OR if you just flat enjoyed riding one.

I think having a good old school sled is a grand idea when you live in snow country so easy to get snowed in and the atv cant get through, it could save your butt.. You just need to play on one for a while and make it work for you learn how to control it kneel on the seat don't sit, use your weight to move it around. You don't have to use it all the time but grooming the trail with one would sure be nice. get an older one so its easy to work on, get a Skidoo or polaris anything thats common so parts are cheap, don't beat it up maintain it and use it as a tool for the homestead and it will be worth your time. But you do what you want just my 1/2 a cent....stay safe thanks for the vid

At one time in my life I had an old sled a Boa and my kids then drove the living hell out of it and I spent a great deal of time repairing it so needless to say I got rid of it. I have a four wheel drive small dump easy go which I also pull a bob sled when we have enough snow but that is hit and miss. Great video hope to see you tonight, have a good one.

Can you get a simple scraper blade made for the 4wheeler? Simply drag the majority of the big snows off the path yet keeps some on the road for that smooth ride. Built like a trailer and able to go from in line to hanging over the side of the trail depending on where you want the waste snow.

I really think a snowmobile would serve you well. You wouldn't be stranded if you could punch a good trail to the road and your ATV has shown it isn't capable of that alone. That's a great old machine. My Dad's rule was when we could lift the snowmobile and turn it around alone we could take them out alone. I learned very young about leverage and using branches lol.

As much as I thought a snowmobile would be a good purchase for you, after watching the video I think it is not the vehicle for you. What it would do is allow you to get out when the path is not clean and you could ride on top of the snow. down the path. So how much you would use it is really dependent on how much snow you actually get through the winter months. You do manage well with your 4 wheeler so it may be a better fit for you. One thing in favor for the 4 wheeler is you do have more protection if you got into a situation with a tree or something. The 4 wheeler looks to be a more hardier machine in comparison. Smart man for trying one out before buying one. On open wide trails a snowmobile is a good choice but Raspberry Rock has a lot of trees and underbrush which may make you use a few "F: words when riding a snowmobile there :) The video was most enjoyable. and the scenery breathtaking as usual. Thank you for sharing your comparison test. Have Fun! :)

WOW!! First to comment that never happens lol. This was a fun video as all are. I will say a few things, yep, you know me. Got to help the logarithm. First, you and I have something in common. I hate raw onions also; cooked are OK. Second, Snow machines are fun if you ride them enough I like Rays due to the fact it can be worked on, no electronics. However that makes them smell with fumes. Third, I keep thinking about the track system, they look like they would soak up the bumps and ride smooth. They are usable year round,(as far as I know) nothing short of a deep hole will stop you. No more winching, to hell with bridges just go through the mud, whatever if it is not to deep to get into air intake. I have considered them for my side by side, 4 wheeler, and I live in Central Texas. Whatever your decision is, it is yours to make. Wishing you a super awesome week. God Bless in all you do.

You have to think about how many years you have lived there. How many years do you have had trouble in the wintertime. If you have a LOT of trouble, I think I would have consider a snowmobil, if I only have had a couple times with road-issues, I would NOT have bought one. The easist maybe, would have been to have chains or belt to switch into when road/snow-issues. 🤔👍👍Any way, nice video.

That snowmobile on the pond made me flash back to one day one summer many years ago, when we were at the lake. This quite beloved, but very quirky friend of ours, for some odd reason, had an old snow machine there. He fired it up and shot out onto the lake. He made it at least 50 yards before the thing sank like a rock and he swam back to shore. It was surprising it went that far, and I imagine it is still there. I'll admit it sounds improbable, but several other folks and I saw it happen. Not sure why there were no consequences. 😆Among other things, it made me wonder if they could ever event a combo snow machine/jet ski. Not that that would help you out any, Russell. Just stick with the ATV unless you work out something better. Have you ever tried Pad Thai sauce? I like Hoisin too, but I think it's my favorite.

Russell.....If you don't have a need for the Snowmobile....why have it right?? We have two almost the same Machine Ray had there but 5 years older a 93 and 94. I found the Snowmobiles hard to get use to, like you said not as nice as riding a quad, but ours have been very reliable and worth their weight in gold to get around our property in winter. If we could afford a nice ATV like yours we might not have a need for the old snowmobiles either. Best wishes.

Re. onion - fry the onion pieces first, maybe with tiny bits of bacon, and add eggs to make scrambled eggs. Tastes quite good.

I would suggest tracks ,best of both worlds , with tracks u would have no problem in you trail in the winter then the wheels in the summer , get more use with one machine

Those older sleds are very reliable which s a good thing - two stroke oil smell is indeed unpleasant and permeate into your clothes. The other thing is those machines have a high rev sweet spot were clutch and motor will run better at or over 5000 rpm. As for the ride, they call them ass-bangers 😂 because a bump will travel through the seat and up your spine - not to comfortable after a while. The newer 4-strokes are wonderful machines but spendy - your atv trail looked to be very good btw - cheers

Great video and drone work. You have a good machine already. I would get taller tries with chains for the winter. Or tracks for your utv. Newer skis have reverse but all or them fall over in deep snow unless you get a very old one that has two tracks underneath like the old Russian models.

Looked like you were in an outboard on the pond! You'd have that trail groomed in no time once you master the skidoo.

OK, you know I will comment on this, lol. That machine is a nice machine but, not suited for your needs or location. The perfect machine for you would be a 1998 ArcticCat 340 with reverse and a 2-up seat so you have a place for city girl to sit. This is a working machine, I have one I bought brand new and still use it to haul trees out of the woods. The perfect machine is what I described but, not neccessarily the same one. You also would be better off with a single or double widetrack Arctic Cat, Polaris or Skidoo which are the best machines for what you need and they will out perform any 4 wheeler in the Winter. Keep an eye out for one of these. Just keep an open mind about snowmachines, they are a way of life here in Alaska. By the way, there is a guy in Alaska, John Suter who does run Poodles in sled dog races and even ran and completed the Iditarod using a mix of Poodles and Alaska sled dogs. Anyway, it was a fun video, say hi to city girl.

I think a sled would be good for winter, not getting stuck on those hills in the quad.!

Good morning Russell, I've watched the handful of your videos and you would be able to handle that trail much better with a little bit taller, narrower, knobbier tires. Dinner looked great! And I really enjoy your videos 👍☮️

Remember, you’re comparing a 24 year old snowmobile to a basically brand new atv. If it were an old crappy atv without reverse, you probably wouldn’t like it very much either…. That being said, I think the atv serves you much better then a sled will. Tracks for your atv, even better!

If you dont like the smell maybe a 4 stroke with the 600 ace engine would work for you. Its very quite aswell 🙂

I love the video with the snowmobile. The problem when you get to much snow the snowmobile would come in handy. I don't like snowmobile I lost someone dear to me. If you learn to drive it in a safety manner way they are fun. Your ATV if you would like it better that's ok to. Also Russell I cook with that teriyaki sauce is not tasty. I love teriyaki sauce if you know of a better one let me know. Also the noodles you cooked I never had them before. Where do get them. Thank you for showing your video. Russell had a wonderful day today. Judy
