This job often requires maneuvering boats where clearances are sometimes less than a foot, but that is to known obstacles. On this job, I came within a couple feet of an obstacle I never saw and only avoided hitting it because the owner of the boat I was towing pointed it out at the last minute. A towboat captain has a lot going on as they approach a dock with a boat in tow, and there’s always the possibility they don’t see something in the way, such as a small boat, a dock, a piling, etc. As the owner/captain of the vessel being towed, always keep an eye out when being towed for potential hazards and don’t hesitate to let the towboat captain know if you see a potential conflict. After all, it’s your boat that will likely be taking the majority of the damage in a collision.

AI-Generated Description:
In this video, we dive into the crucial safety considerations for boat owners when being towed by a towboat captain. Join us as we explore the real-life experience of a towboat captain who narrowly avoided a collision thanks to the vigilance of the boat owner being towed.
Navigating through tight clearances and unknown obstacles is a common challenge for towboat captains. While they are skilled at maneuvering in tight spaces, unexpected hazards can still pose a risk. That's why it's essential for boat owners to remain vigilant and actively observe their surroundings during the towing process.
In this particular instance, the owner of the boat being towed played a critical role in averting disaster by spotting an obstacle that the towboat captain had missed. This serves as a reminder that safety is a shared responsibility between the towboat captain and the boat owner.
As a boat owner/captain, it's vital to keep a keen eye out for potential hazards such as small boats, docks, pilings, or any other obstructions that may come into play during the towing process. Don't hesitate to communicate with the towboat captain if you notice any potential conflicts or dangers.
Remember, in the event of a collision, it's your boat that will likely sustain the majority of the damage. By staying alert and proactive, you can help ensure a safe and smooth towing experience for everyone involved.
Join us as we emphasize the importance of communication and vigilance in ensuring safe towing operations. Watch the full video to learn more about how you can play a proactive role in safeguarding your boat during the towing process. Stay safe on the water!

Dude...that was an outstanding display of your piloting skills!! Crabbing this boat away from that dock, and without a bow thruster...WOW!!! Great job!! So I was curious as to how you like these twin outboards compared to your old single diesel, now that you've really had the time to learn what they can and cannot do?? I'm sure your diesel had more low end torque for pulling power, but do the quick throttle response of the outboards and the fact that there's twins to use in your favor work better for your needs? Pros and cons with everything naturally. Great show! 👍

Thanks Peterbilt! I absolutely love the twin outboards for everything I do except for heavy ungroundings...that's when I miss the inboard diesel, even though it was almost 1/3 of the HP I have now

Any chance you can do a chart overlay once in a while so we can see the areas? Appreciate the vids
@CaptKenO
@CaptKenO 4 ай бұрын
There's always a chance for something 😉 Can you be more specific about what you would like to see for the overlay? Like do you just want a screenshot of where I am when I arrive on scene?
@havanashamrock
@havanashamrock 4 ай бұрын
Is it possible to put a small box in the corner of the screen with maybe a Nautical chart that traces your route? I’m sure for the boaters new to this area it would be interesting inc myself thanks Capt.
@CaptKenO
@CaptKenO 4 ай бұрын
@havanashamrock is it possible? Yes. But I'd need a separate device running the chart app and screen recording the whole time, so a bit more complex than I want to deal with currently...but I will keep it in mind for the future

Another solid job Capt Ken. When your tow presents those blind spots can you cover them with a GoPro and monitor through your phone? Thanks for another insight into your profession. Well done Sir…
@CaptKenO
@CaptKenO 4 ай бұрын
Thanks Lowrider! I've had that suggested to me before, but the problem is that a phone is so tiny I can't just glance at it and see something, so I'd have to really focus on it which would mean I'm not looking where I'm going 😬

Towing insurance is essential. It's probably the least expensive part of boating. The two times I needed a tow, it paid for itself for at least a decade. Bad fuel and a failed waterpump

With all the tows you’ve done, what would you rate as the highest incidence by type, and what’s your best advice to avoid getting towed?
@CaptKenO
@CaptKenO 4 ай бұрын
Mechanical failure (can't really classify what the failure is/was) is number 1, followed by groundings 2, dead battery 3, out of fuel 4. solutions. spend the money to properly maintain your boat, know the area you're boating in, don't run both batteries at once/install 2 batteries if only have one, always fuel your boat before you go out or when you get back

Why didn’t you put out the other spring line?
@CaptKenO
@CaptKenO 4 ай бұрын
Didn't really need it. The stern line was doing a good enough job keeping the boat from moving forward. The spring line I did have could've been tightened up a lot, but it all worked out fine

Ken what's a tow like that cost typically? New subscriber love the content!
@CaptKenO
@CaptKenO 4 ай бұрын
Thanks Jason! If you have a membership like this guy did... $0! I don't remember exactly how long this tow was, but it probably would've been around $1500-2k. If you have a boat. Get a membership. A top tier one costs $200/year and you won't have to pay anything, otherwise you're paying $400/hr+ and that's from the time I leave my dock to when I get back

Mate, the speed you were going it would have only been a love tap, little scratch on the rub rail. Lots of vertical lines hide one another.

Nah. It wasn't that fast, but there's a lot of inertia behind that boat, so it would've definitely done some fiberglass damage

Curious why the hurry to get off a hip tow in the channel?
@CaptKenO
@CaptKenO 4 ай бұрын
Because it's better to be on a stern tow if you don't need the control of a hip tow...and once we made that last turn out into the basin, there was no need for that level of control

Dual engine failure at the dock? Bad gas? That doesn't look like a 40ft boat to me (from the video anyways. Probably would in person), but I'll believe the 390 number. SeaRay numbers are screwy. A family member had a 38ft 370AC. They're so close, yet so far away from having the model match the length.
@CaptKenO
@CaptKenO 2 ай бұрын
It doesn't necessarily have to be a dual engine failure. Could've just been one and he didn't want to drive the boat with only one engine
