Thanks so much for this video. My amazonica leaf dried one by one. And it shed all its leaves. I gave up on the plant. But happened to see your video. I removed the plant and put it in water. And whoa the Tuber sprung back to life... I am so grateful for this video.

I used to grow my alocasia in my fish tank. There was no filter, only some plants including alocasia planted in sand. Roots were fully submerged. It was getting all the nutrients from fish waste, and was growing tremendously! Adding new leaf fortnightly

Thank you! 🙏 Thank you!🙏 Thank you! 🙏 This advice makes so much sense! I am going to use your idea in this way: I will plant my alocasia in a wide (10”), shallow (2”) bowl filled with LECA medium and distilled nutrient water. Hope this works. You’ve made my day!😅

When ut comes to water, I've heard that rain water is really good not only because the water is much softer but also because it's more nutrient rich. Since you change water frequently anyways rain water is what I recommend. I always water my plants with it if it's possible.

Thank you for your video it's probably the only one on KZfaq about water culturing African Mask. I've grown them for years. I use a bark orchid mix without moss it's similar to the soil that Bromeliads like so I kind of mixed that up as a blend and it's been very successful for many years. My income level dropped and I wasn't able to afford the better soil, I used a cheap MiracleGro potting mix and they really aren't liking it .. I'M not liking the black fungus flies it came with and I can't get rid of them for good not with anything (even the best.. Systemic insecticide) they just come back every so often. So I water culture my orchids and they do extremely - extremely well and I was curious whether I could water culture my African mask also. Your video answered that question for me. A tip if you ever want to grow them in soil again its like I said that combination of nonMoss orchid soil that has bark chips in it for the roots to grow around combined with a semi sandy type that bromilliads like, so mixing them together pretty much 50/50 is a perfect combination. I add powdered peat moss just a light sprinkle to the mix for proper moisture retention. The trick I've found is that they liked to dry out to the point that the soil pulls away from the container and at that point they like a good saturated watering and a good drain. I found putting them in a tub and letting them soak the water upward (instead of pouring it over them and washing nutrients away by downward- pouring) was the best solution and removing them from that soak pot after a couple hours when they were completely saturated and allowing them to drain out the excess thoroughly made them grow like giants. They like gentle sun rays and mostly diffused very bright light. And soil changes every 6 months to a year. I never fertilized them. Anyway, thank you so much for posting this sorely needed video for many who love Polly/African Mask but for various reasons need this alternative! Can't wait to (now confidently) switch them over!!!

I'm so happy I found this video! Thank you for sharing. I am going to try this with my last leaf 😭. Do you know why the plant can die from root rot in soil but can live with roots submerged in water?
@tigerlily0218
@tigerlily0218 4 жыл бұрын
Its mostly about oxygen. In cases of root rot, there is not enough drainage and water just sits in the soil. Basically, your roots are waterlogged. This means there's not enough aeration around your roots and they dont get enough oxygen.
@tigerlily0218
@tigerlily0218 4 жыл бұрын
In roots submerged in water, it's still important to change the water regularly and aerate the water in cases of hydroponics 😊

Hi sandy. Sorry for the late reply. How's your alocasia doing? When you're saying it's not firm, does it feel like its spongy or like wet? If it is, that's not good. Change water and add a little fertilizer and if you have it, seaweed liquid or seasol.

@tigerlily0218
@tigerlily0218 4 жыл бұрын
Apologies for the late reply. This method is worth a try. You might also want to wipe the leaves with dish soap, water and neem oil if you have it. Without seeing the plant itself, it's hard to determine what exactly is causing your plant's issues. Some pests can cause yellowing of the plant like spider mites which Alocasias are prone to. So I suggest doing both, repotting and pest control.
