I noticed once an Alocasia has acclimated to your environment, they're surprisingly hardy. Anytime a new leaf is beginning to unfurl, I'll slightly increase how often I water it because I noticed the size and uniformity of the new leaf is affected by how much water it receives. Just my experience though!

I agree. Almost every silver dragon I’ve brought home lost the leaves within weeks but new growth has acclimated to my home and looks to be doing better. Normal house humidity of 50% and so far so good.

You are definitely succeeding in keeping your channel interesting and informative. I think we can't get enough of plant experiments! I love that you manage to keep your alocasias in really low humidity while every other source (on KZfaq at least) says that they need at least 70% to do well. Now we don't have to risk causing mold in our houses for keeping alocasias anymore haha

Thanks for the info on the corms and smaller plants. A mystery alocasia just popped up in the pot next to the alocasia lauterbachiana I have. Rounded leaf and spotted stem. Hopefully the mix of coconut coir will help in its own pot. Also did the same for some corms that came off of my alocasia black stem. Fingers crossed that it works. Found your video while looking for care for jewel alocasia since I'm getting an imperialis. It's really put to rest any unease of things I read from earlier places, and a past bad experience with a polly (which wasn't really my fault). Wonderful mojito and black coral(?) you have. You should look at the 'Hawaiian Punch' variety if you like colocasia, too.

I have my Frydek, Silver Dragon, Dragon Scale, Stingray, Black Stem, Boa, Zebrina, and Sarian. Coming out of winter, these all made it through but I think I lost my Sarian as it lost all of its leaves. Gotta check the roots. My Silver Dragon and Dragon Scale both went into dormancy. The Dragon Scale is coming back and two corms from the Silver Dragon are coming back. My Frydek was very large until the winter progressed and it lost its older leaves one by one. I'm down to one leaf, BUT it flowered and I'm getting berries soon. I hope after this cycle it will still make it. I also have a Frydek corm that is coming out now, too. It is a learning process and a journey that I'm glad I'm not alone on! Thanks for this awesome and informative video!!

I only have two (a black star and a black velvet) and transitioned both from soil to diy pon with no problem. The velvet even tried to flower 3 separate times. I removed the inflo each time. I use a wicking system and only have to water every 9ish days - great for someone who travels a lot.

I have yet to try pon. What are the advantages to using that medium for you?
@grat2010
@grat2010 2 жыл бұрын
The main reason for converting was so I could use a wicking system with a reservoir, which allowed me to water less frequently. I add leca into the pon to make it more airy. Many in my FB leca group say their alocasias do great in just leca also. While in soil I let the alocasias dry out between waterings but they have surprisingly been fine with always being damp/moist (but never wet) in the Pon mix.
@Mandi_Hui

Lovely Alocasia collection yeah alot of people can struggle with this type of plant. My issue more with watering since they like there soil moist so watering can be tricky. All my plants do have a good airy mix. Also getting yellow leaves at the tips or around the edges or in the middle of the leaves. I found an Alocasia Dragon Scale for €9 in Ikea so I thought i give it a try. Has lost two leaves at the bottom mainly the smaller size ones. And has given me two new leaves but one looks deformed looking for some reason. I have been thinking getting the Alocasia Cuprea looks so Alien like and metallic too the Azlanii one is more expensive also another pretty one. Also want the Alocasia Sinuata which definitely more amazing than the Dragon Scale the leave colour and structure. My all time favourite wishlist one is the Alocasia Scalprum so mystic looking and dragon look aswell. Not a fan of perlite anymore now builts up green colour and too powdery want to get the bigger perlite size but cannot find. Thank you for sharing how to cut the stem i have been doing it wrong cutting at the bottom of the stem 😰. Will know for future. I think they need some bulbs inside the plant to provide growth and nutrients aswell so i would not remove all of it.
@EverythingPlants
@EverythingPlants 2 жыл бұрын
That is the downside with perlite when it get a bit of algae build up, but honestly I really haven't had an issue with it. Try using an opaque container which doesn't let any light through.

This video was so helpful to me. I brought a Polly back from IKEA and it's my first alocasia which is kinda alien compared to most regular house plants. But a couple weeks after I brought it back, it started dropping leaves so I thought it was dying but now I'm pretty sure it's going dormant because of my air conditioning. So now I'm just gonna keep taking care of it, see what happens, and start propagating the corms 🙂

Great video today. I had a Pink Dragon go dormant on me and only from my shear laziness in not getting around to throwing it out did I realize that it was in fact only dormant and not dead. It has just this month given me the biggest leaf yet and a new one is forming still. It is a gorgeous plant right now with like 4 or 5 leaves. I have 2 Maharani's, One has a leaf with a lot of yellowing spots on it. I may have to cut that leaf off. The other plant has a tiny off shoot growing at the edge of the pot, so cute. My Black Velvet is not looking so great. Only has 3 small roundish leaves and it looks like it wants to start curling up and dieing. Don't know what to do with that one. I was about to give up on Alocasia's after I thought I killed the Pink Dragon, because I also killed another one, can't remember the name. But now it is my best looking one. OH, I also have a little Dragon Scale that is doing very well. That one is pushing out leaf #5 or 6, it is a small plant. I need to repot that one but it's doing so well, my grandmother's words keep going thru my head "leave well enough alone". I look forward to the updates.

I also have two Mojito's inside, and am thinking about putting them outside, but don't know if they can handle it yet, as they are very small and I've not had them long. I also have Pharoah's mask, Dragon's tooth, Poly, Dragon's breath, Bambino, Stingray, Frydek, Purple Sword, Sarian, Dragon's scale, Silver dragon and Mayan Mask. Wow, I didn't realize how many Alocasia's/Colocasia's I had until I started listing them. I also have Californicus (Green Alocasia) and Mammoth Colocasia outside. My question is which medium is best to grow them in, as it seems too hard to keep them from going dormant in soil. So right now I'm trying a chunky soil with a crap load of perlite in it. But I see you're doing pure perlite with some and other mediums with others. Any help is appreciated, as we all know how finicky these guys are. Thanks.

2:43 this is exactly what my silver dragon is doing but I’ve had it for at least 6 months. I thought it was getting root rot but I took it out and the roots looked completely healthy. Also found a few nice sized corms! I have one tiny little leaf coming in from a pup. But other than that, the older leaves have pretty much have all went droopy and/or yellow and fallen off. One last one looks like it’s doing the same thing. The leaves that are left all looks healthy for now. I wonder if it got offended when I cut all it’s flowers off.?? I just put that together, maybe that’s it!!

My pink Dragon just put our a new leaf with no loss and another one is starting on it already and we're not even finished the full unfurl. My Zebrina is new and isn't doing anything yet which I consider good. It came with three leaves. But, my Polly (Amazonica mask) has put out one leaf and lost two... I think she's getting ready for a new leaf as well but it's interesting when they all live next to each other under the same lamp 🤣

I have monstera deliciosa, adansonii, pothos, coffea arabica and even fiddles and calatheas! So wait... about what you said about the moss 21:38: when the "thin layer" of moss is dry, that means that enough substrat underneath is dry too? Meaning that when just a bit of substrat is dry, the moss is still wet? I'm asking because the layer of moss seems like it would make it more difficult to really know the need of water, opposite to when you can just stick your finger in the substrat. And if substrat and moss don't dry at the same pace, that could even give flase information, no? It's a real newbie question and I never used moss anyway.
@EverythingPlants
@EverythingPlants 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Axel. I like to use terracotta pots for moisture control and better air flow, but they dry out much faster then compared to plastic. So I have started to add the sphagnum moss. You can still check the soil by poking your finger through or just lifting up the moss (which i occasionally still do) I have found that when the moss on top is crispy then generally the soil on top is drier as well. So I give it water. Does this answer your question?
@littlezork
@littlezork Жыл бұрын
Something to add even if this is late-ish that I had experience with and if you might be curious about this, too. There was a black stem alocasia that I had purchased back in November and it came potted in nothing but sphagnum moss. It actually loved the moss quite well and it was so easy to see when I needed to water it as opposed to soil which can sometimes just appear darker. Whereas the moss would just feel dry and actually look dry. I only recently got to repotting it because it just seemed so happy in it and it was outgrowing the pot by leaps and bounds. Not sure how it thrived so long that way. As for top moss, I use the same method for my orchids/nepenthes that he described and it works pretty well. Top is dry, check underneath. Usually a good indicator and a reminder to just check the plants. It was really the same with the blacks stem, too. Top was crusty? Check the rest.

I believe Dormancy is connected to acclimation and watering. After losing a huge variegated Freuden due to it not being acclimated although pushing out leaves and pups the variegation was irregular. After removing the pups the Mother plant died. I personally have no success with soil so I’ve transferred all 10 Alocasia to semi hydro Lecha and they love it. Also it takes the guesswork out of watering. It’s truly made the hobby less than a chore.
