You need more subs! I just found you on the notching video and you're the most realistic plant parent I've found! I use well water simply BC of budget but it is tested and safe for human consumption and I drink it everyday, so do my pets including the birds. I'm hoping it's ok for my calathea and my alocasia, it's been good for my other plants for years.

Can you actually divide the roots and make two plants out of one like the marant has I think is what you call them the big wide white lines in it I got me one at Kroger's and I was just wondering cuz it looks like it's a pretty good-sized plant for the pop that they've got it again

the type of water is very important but if your water comes from a well, normally it is very fine, same for rain water (though in a big city it can be slightly polluted). If you don't have a well like me, it is better to put one or two drops of product for aquarium and fish in the water (they are many brands on Amazon or in aquarium retailers like API). It removes chlorine or chloramine and all bad stuff. Since I have been doing that the situation of my calatheas has improved. Those plants doesn't like to be moved also, I have killed a two years marantha by doing this ! Last thing : calathea makoyana are beautiful and very strong, that's the only one that never have any issues in my house.

I use water conditioner (typically for fishtank water conditioning) in all my water before watering my plants. My calathia stopped crusting up instantly. It's another option asside from distilled water. It was $3 on amazon. I use a dropper to drip the conditioner into my watering can.

14:27 here’s a suggestion I have small a cement birdbath inside from outside, and I put a bubbler fountain 2.5 watt (Amazon ) I weight it down with glass marbles…puts a little humidity in the air! Also serves as the cat fountain lol… it’s only about 2 feet tall salad summer so they can’t take it over but I keep filtered water from the fridge in it daily. Calathea Medallion is in east on a table not far from the fountain.

I love calatheas and I've taken care of them for years. In that time though I've realized that my home environment isn't suited for particular ones, especially if they have a velvety feel. The one that's not velvety but i struggle with is the green back orbifolia, the red one is much easier to care for.

We typically wipe down our plants at least once or twice a month. A damp microfiber cloth works great or taking a lint roller and using that on the fronts and reverse sides of the plants with bigger leaves. Plus, doing this will pick the dust and any tiny little critters.

I've only very recently started getting into calatheas. At first I had no idea how truly temperamental they can be. I found out the hard way but have resolved a lot of the problems through watching informative you tube videos, and I've seen a lot! I must say your videos are heads and shoulders above anything else I have seen. They cover every aspect of care. Kudos to you.

I have a Freddie/Freddy and a Ctenathe, and it is very easy to see when they are thirsty: their leaves curl. But the Orbifolia has been giving me a headache. The backside of the leaves has turned brown...even though the frontside is still green. BUT the last to waterings I used rainwater bc I collected it for my carnivorous too. And I just noticed a new stem emerging AND part of the back of the leaves are starting to turn green again 👏🏻. I don’t want to use distilled water bc it takes so many resources to produce that. If I don’t have enough rainwater, I will use demineralized water.

Having seen multiple Calathea care videos over the years, i wish i could have discovered you sooner because I think yours is by far the most detail-oriented and extensive, thank you!! Your channel seems super informative and relatable! As for me, I have had calathea orbifollia for about 2 years, (it was actually my first plant ever, sold on the idea that it is super easy to take care of by a plant shop 🙃). It has always struggled a bit, but recently, almost all of its leaves have turned pale yellow, crisp all over, and brown… it feels like it’s being attacked from all corners! Maybe it’s that one time of giving it tap water (I live in Europe), maybe it’s lack of sun from its usual place or the cold… never have replanted it btw so maybe the soil is deleted… I’m struggling to keep it alive😢, maybe it’s finally at the point of no return… but anyways, I’ll def. use your video to guide me through the process. You’re quickly turning into one of my fave plant KZfaqr!! 😊

Good video. I find consistency is the key with these plants especially watering but some varieties have different needs. My orbifolia likes to dry out more and prefers low light. My triostar needs more light to produce the beautiful white variegation. I use fish tank water for mine. I’ve never had spider mites but took almost a year to eliminate thrips on my calathea.

It's funny this video pops up. My wife Mom over watered her Rattle Snake Calethea while we were out of town for a few days, and the plant honestly looked so sad when we got home. She wanted to toss the plant out, and I took it upon myself to rescue it, and it came back, but mind you, it took a good 8 months. We also uppotted it, and it's doing quite well. I will admit that these plants can be a bit dramatic and / or fussy but once you figure it out, they're awesome plants. Our Maranta Plants stay in our upper level on a north facing window sill, and our Ctenanthe lives in our bathroom, which has a skylight and a frosted window. Soon, I want to take some cuttings and grow those and resell them.

I am currently struggling with my green Maranta Leuconeura. It has faded and lost leaves and just sad looking. It was repotted into a pot that was too big and over watered (by me ☹ ) so I repotted it into a smaller pot. Now I am waiting to see what else to do. I had it in an east facing window and I think it was too much light so I moved it back a bit. This video was very good for me to troubleshoot what could be wrong with my plant. I'm so glad you said they can die back a ton. I thought I'd killed my plant over the last few years through multiple moves and very inconsistent care. It had died back SO much but it's putting out some tentative new growth now and I'm hopeful! But I am worried, there's some whitish fuzz on the top of the soil and I'm not sure what to do
@AlohaPlantLife
@AlohaPlantLife 4 ай бұрын
Sounds like it could be mold on top of the soil. Just remember when it has hardly any leaves it won’t need watering as often as it used to. You can treat the mold on top of the soil by spraying it with a copper fungicide spray.
@rachelpye2760
@rachelpye2760 4 ай бұрын
@@AlohaPlantLife thank you so much! Yeah I noticed it was still very moist from a watering a few Weeks ago. I ended up scooping out as much of the mold as I could and realized it was really thriving on all of the old dead bits that were leftover at soil level. So I tried to really gently remove some of that without disturbing any of the new growth. Hopefully I didn't do too much. I put it up out of my reach to let it deal with the rest of the moisture it's got. Poor thing. I'll order some fungicide cause I'm sure I didn't eliminate the fungus completely. Also I just finally got my hands on a pilea involucrata and it's Gorgeous, do you have a video on them?

I love marantas/calathea, give me these guys over a pink princess any day 😅i have 10 and they do fine. Honestly i think a lot of the issues come from inconsistent watering. They hate drying out completely but they also don't want to sit in a puddle for days. I water little but fairly often. I use dehumidifier water to save me buying distilled water as £10 a week for a bottle of water seems a little steep.

I moved my 1.5 inch pot Maranta into a 3 inch terracotta. I can now see it's two vines in there and since moving it to slightly larger it's started to pray how it should and I've been getting 3 new leaves a week. I do have to water every couple of days but that's because it's terracotta and it's tiny, i would guess a full watering really only holds like a tablespoon (what doesn't come out the bottom). It seems happy though and so far haven't lost any leaves. I won't check on roots etc until the plant starts to act funny or if i start to look a lot of leaves. Now that i know it didn't pray, at all, in the too small pot that's a good sign for me to look for. I wouldn't say it was "root bound" in the traditional sense but those tiny pots simply don't have much room! I can't believe you're monstera was this small a year ago. It's huge now, and i thought it was big a year ago 🤣🤣🤣

My pinstripe I lost slowly over the last few months fighting mealie bugs that took my setosa and then it gave me 2 new leaves. Then the leaves shriveled, one fell off but the other just stayed with just that bit if color just like your rattlesnake did lol. I got so frustrated at mine, I cut off the dead part and put the pot in the corner of my kitchen counter because I wasn’t ready to throw it away. Good thing I did that because almost a month later and a new leaf is popping up, I’m so happy 😁

I have a lemon one and it's not doing so well. At first I think it got too much direct sunlight - but otherwise the room is ideal (high humidity, warm). So I brought it downstairs to the living room where it would get medium light. But turns out it's too cold. Now the plant has some leaves that sre permanently closed and the rest do not close at all during the night. I'm gonna bring it back upstairs. I live in Nordic Europe, so the growing conditions are very different to most other world. Like during winter it's -20C and dry air. No sunlight (I have plant lights for this reason). However, come spring and summer the temperatures go up to 35C and the sun is up for approx 18hours a day (not joking btw). It's also extremely high on UV radiation because we are in the north so it doesn't shine high up in the sky but rather directly from the horizon. It's quite a hassle to keep these alive when the conditions go from one extreme to another every year.

A word of caution on well water - the mineral content in well water depends entirely on where you live. I live in southeast Wyoming, and a lot of our well water is hard as a rock! It is full of calcium and magnesium to the point it leaves hard water deposits on anything it comes into contact with for very long. Be aware of that. I do not use my well water to water any of my prayer plants. I go with distilled.

As a new plant parent, the first two plants I was drawn to after seeing them online were Ficus elastica ‘Tineke’ and Stromanthe tricolor. I’ve done really well with the Ficus, but I got a very sad-looking Stromanthe from a big box store and I’m not sure if I’m improved things for it or not. I guess time will tell.

If it was already sad looking when you got it, just be patient and follow my care tips. Big box stores have a tendency to overwater plants, did you check the roots to make sure the plant doesn’t have the start of root rot? That’s always my biggest concern when someone tells me a plant they got at a big box store isn’t doing well.

If you have a really good reverse osmosis system, with multiple filters and all that, supposedly the difference between that and the distilled water you buy at the store is that the reverse osmosis system leaves in some minerals after removing all the pollutants. For drinking, some people say these good minerals make the RO water healthier and/or taste better, but how do prayer plants feel about this?

Thanks for this video. I believe I knew most of what you were chatting about, however I don't have as many of the various genuses as you. The tried rattlesnake, it died. My Calathea Orbifolia is doing well, except for the crisping leaves. I have it on a pebble tray, but I am going to see if there is something funky going on with the soil. The one thing I feel you didn't mention is moving. I feel like they don't like being moved. Once you find a "happy" spot for them, leave them alone. You can always boil your water, instead of buying distilled water. I am trying again with the Maranta. I am praying it doesn't die 🙏🏽wish me luck.

I live in the desert and my calatheas thrived until I moved. My air conditioning was broken for the first week in the new house in the heat of summer, so my Makoyana got burnt. It's around 4.5 ft tall, a huge plant, and now more than half the leaves are brown-tipped. Should I prune them all back and keep it pushing? New leaves are growing so it's not dead.

I have, over many years, tried Maranta, & they have always turned brown. I got a Ctenthe, but its leaves turned brown, until I pruned it back & it is doing better in my basement. I recently tried a Calathea, but it turned brown & shriveled up. The one exception is my "rattlesnake" Calathea, which has thrived for about 20 months in my bathroom. However, it has been re-classified to a different genus, Goeppertia insignis, which may be why it seems to tolerate somewhat lower humidity than Calathea. I use rain water & de-humidifier water for my house plants. About your Maranta with faded leaves, can too much light cause leaves to fade?

@@AlohaPlantLife normally distilled but I am in florida and i had it outside under a canopy. we had a few weeks of humid rainy weather. I may have given it some rainwater. Alternatively I was thinking I had gone too long without watering it and pushed it into dormancy? or was worried the weather had spread a fungus like it seems to do. I'm going to keep it around and see what happens. oh and it was rootbound so up-potted it. its still got a few good leaves but its a far cry from the beauty that it was. Given thats its now september perhaps it went into dormancy thinking it was winter. I'm confused, but I'm going to wait and see. You've made me more aware of the importance of good water.

Hi there, I recently bought a Gray Star plant. On most of the back of the leaves it has clear light dots. I doubt it is bugs nor mold. They might be sensors? Do you have them on your praying plants? I just noticed it develops a honey or clear glue substance on those spots. It smears when I touch it. I don't see any bugs, mites, mold.

@@AlohaPlantLife well thanks to your watering series of videos I gave her some major hydrotherapy. I loosely tied up her leaves (my thought was it would make it easier for her to uptake the water, no clue if true) gave her a thorough water, let her sit in it for a hour, let her rest over night. My fav Calatheas are Rattlesnakes. I had one rattlesnake and peacock and those have rotted on me. So i bought two more rattlesnakes. I wanted to put them together to make one big plant🪴. Simce they tend to have a mind of its own, should keep them separate since they tend to pray? I feel like the root system is for that single plant.
@AlohaPlantLife
@AlohaPlantLife Жыл бұрын
You know, I’d never really thought about that before but you’re right about the fact the leaves would probably ‘pray’ into each other 🤔. But I’m thinking they would probably adjust over time. As long as the root balls for each of the plants are about the same size and you’re not combining them into a pot that’s too big or too small for them then you should be fine to combine them.

While I usually fertilize when I have new growth coming in which I have three new leaves, I’ve heard for some plants not to fertilize when its blooming? Have you dealt with this, does it harm the plant ?
@AlohaPlantLife
@AlohaPlantLife 11 ай бұрын
It won’t harm the plant. The plant will put all its energy into that bloom and sacrifice leaves in the process if it has to. So if you think about fertilizing it should actually help it be less likely to sacrifice leaves because now it will have more nutrients to spread around if that makes sense.
