Alone at Another Off Grid Cabin in the Wilderness, Catching my Biggest Lake Trout

Living in a Canadian province with over 250,000 lakes and rivers makes fish the most important and plentiful source of calories from the wild for me. A few days spent exploring and learning new lakes and rivers yields several trout and burbot and after releasing a few small fish and eating a couple lakeside, I take 7,000 calories back to the cabin to prepare into fish stock, fish soup, fried fish and smoked trout, enough calories to fuel me for 2 days of hardworking in the winter.

Modern life, cities, and technology separate us from the real world. We were not meant to live in boxes called apartments. We were not meant to get our food from boxes in the grocery store. We were not meant to live in a concrete jungle… full of asphalt, rebar, and concrete. We were meant to stay and live in the real world.

Dear Shawn, I have been watching you for years man, and you have become one of the men in the world that I idolize. There are so many reasons for this and I would like to thank you, for being you. Without you I don't know if would have been as easy getting off drugs and becoming the man that I want to become. This year I turn 40 and if by the time I am your age if I can accomplish half the things you have then I'll take that as a W in the win column. Your dedication to the craft, your family and the wilderness is a cut above the rest. I'm not saying this to be a fan boy (even though I am) , but more to tell you the power and positive vibes that you have given so many of us. Please don't ever stop and my family and I thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Thanks to you I get up early, I work out every day, I eat more holistic among many other things. Yes, I am responsible for doing all these things but when I first saw one of your videos all those years ago I said to myself that I have wanted to be similar to you. (I too read and watched the Dick Prenokee story. I said I wanted to be like him too but never acted. This time I have. You have become the new aged version of this great man)....so I'm trying to be more like you and Mr. Prenokee now. I don't care if this sounds corny to anyone because it's true. You are one of the people who saved my life. Again my family and I thank you. Keep up the good work of God and job well done my friend.

Dear Musk, Your comment is NOT corny AT ALL!!!! It was honest and heartfelt and you gave credit where credit was due. And you, my friend, are a rock star!!! Overcoming addiction is NO easy task. My oldest boy, 43 yrs. old today, overcame drug and alcohol addiction and he continues to overcome every day. I'm positive you will do the same and if Shawn inspires you, wonderful👍👍👍💕🥰❣️😁♥️

well brother your testimony brought tears to this ole man's eyes. I'm twenty two years older than you. I too battled Alcoholism and Drug addiction for decades and It was only through Jesus Christ did I finally overcome. Not just that I had a chronic back injury that God healed me of as well. I had a failed fusion and the top disc was worn right out completely they told me I would need another surgery in ten years its been eighteen years now. . And they refuse to operate but God had other plans. After learning how to tap into his presence I finally got victory from 25 years of severe suffering. You can all things through Jesus Christ my friend. Whatever dreams you have with him you will overcome. That has been my testimony, I too have been looking to men like Shawn He's a great mentor for a many of young men out there these days, so don't think for a second that you sound corny, you don't sound corny at all. I'm sure you're not the only one that looks up to Shawn the way you do. He's a great guy, very down to earth and hard worker. That what sums Up Shawn to me and his love for his family shines forth in so many ways. nothing wrong giving acknowledgement where they are well deserved.

At some point, I want a tour of the implementation for all of your processes. Just the cooking equipment, all the metal Ware, the woodworking tools and the ground cellar are an education in themselves. It would be fun and interesting to hear your perspective and words on all the cast iron and kitchenware you've selected, the history behind them, and also, how there is never a single piece of plastic in view during your videos.. I love the 19th century vibe. Congratulations on the beautiful catch!

I've been watching for a long time but this video really makes me appreciate some of the people on youtube putting in this amount of effort and time and care into something so interesting. The real deal from someone really living it. Thanks Shawn, Mr. James for a video far more interesting than anything on tv. You are one of the many reasons I haven't watched tv for 10 years. Seeing that trout made my mouth water... Haven't eaten anything that delicious since I was a wee one.. My Grandfather was Chicasaw Indian, he built his house, grew, raised, trapped and caught every morsel of food. I was the only grandchild who waited excitedly for summer break so I could stay the whole summer with him and follow him everywhere.... Grandma had a difficult time trying to keep me in the house when Gramps needed some alone time ! I learned so much from her as well but my Grandfather was my hero.. You inspire me as he did. Too bad I was a girl. Otherwise he wouldn't have been able to shake me off for anything... Thanks Shawn

Congratulations on your catch, amazing!! I thought I could share a " lifehack" with you, if you're interested, to me it's a good one. Whenever i fry my fish or some other delicate foods, i take a sheet of baking paper and lay it down on my frying pan and only then i add oil/ butter and fry , you get to keep every tiny bit of whatever is frying... It doesn't stick, it doesn't spit the oil all over the place and my pan stays clean as well 🙂 Thank you for your videos, to me it's like a remedy from the modern world ☺️
