Miss Nancy and I are back in the van this week for an awesome adventure, but we are still having a lot of problems. We had an amazing time in the mist experiencing the moors in a way I never have before. Join us for some solitude in nature and a cosy night in the van. #greyhound #vanlife #solo #campervan
Healthy one pot pasta recipe (vegan):
Vegetable stock
Can of tomatoes
Garlic
Lemon rind
Chickpeas
Macaroni
Spinach
Salt, pepper and oregano
Tahini (to taste for creaminess or leave out)
A little about us: I adopted my ex-racing greyhound Miss Nancy three years ago, it was a massive learning curve for both of us and we have become the best of friends, who love going on outdoor adventures, wild swims, van camping and finding vegan food out and about! We make videos showing what it’s like to have a greyhound as a pet, the beautiful outdoors, vanlife, and life with a greyhound!

Stunning. In 45 years of fostering dogs I’ve literally never had one who’d sleep through meal prep, let alone stay asleep while I ate my food in their bed. Greyhounds really do have that on/off switch :)

Our greyhound will always move for a treat, but when he won’t budge i know he’s in a real grump. Greyhounds are the most gentle and beautiful dogs, but often terribly stubborn 😊

That’s it, Miss Nancy finds it impossible usually to refuse a treat but she’s no fool and if she is dead against the proposed activity she digs her paws right in 🫣 Stubborn, beautiful, wonderful 🥰

You may be too young to remember it but the start of the video reminded me of American werewolf in London, so of course you had to be on Dartmoor. Luckily your video wasn’t a horror. 😉You managed to make good of a dull canvas with your cheery banter. Sorry to see you are still struggling with Nancy. When watching Eva zu beck she used a travel box at home and in the van to give her dog a familiar ‘safe’ space. Maybe something to look into. Thanks for taking us on another adventure, I’m struggling with inspiration due dull start of year.

I don’t think I’ve actually seen that film! Thank you glad you liked it, yep the struggle of my life continues 🙈 Urgh it is hard something and the weather had been pretty grim this year, it’s hard to make good plans and get out. Might find everything covered in mist!

Another great adventure Tori even though it was really claggy. Dont be hard on yourself with regards to Nancy, you are not bullying her at all, she has an amazing life with you, all dogs have their own querky personalities and elements of stubborness when they are comfy or cant be arsed....lol....keep smiling and enjoy the ride !! ❤

I had actually though she would travel in the bed i made her under mine at the back but she never really wanted to go in there so it didn’t stick. Maybe i can try again?! It’s sad but when she is really unhappy driving she won’t take any food at all, and she loves a snack 😭❤️

I knew this was going to be relaxing and serene so I timed the viewing with a long relaxing bath... I wasn't prepared for the emotional rollercoaster you took us on though... When you feel bad about how you are with Ms Nancy, just remember, it is only because you care about her so much and everything you do for her, is aimed at making her life better. Although it was tough watching you upset, it is yet another example of what a beautiful and real person you are. By the time I'd watched, and finished my relaxing bath, I was all wrinkled. I cannot possible say whether I was also wrinkled before the bath...

I bet you felt particularly grateful to be warm and relaxed, like I did, watching her out in the cold, silent mist. I'm not alone in thinking she is a one-off and very watchable, compelling person then? I mean, it was foggy, there was nothing to see and nothing to hear so why is it still so addictive? 🤣🛀. PS. I love the mist, perhaps because I love the earriness of it all, how shapes and outlines of the landscapes are less defined and distinguishable and even sounds are somehow altered by the mist. A very peaceful place brilliant for quiet contemplation. Sorry to see you upset Tori. It's completely understandable I've gone through similar things I think most dog owners have had situations that's made them feel the same way. The point is you're doing everything possible for Miss Nancy's comfort and having your heart in the right place is what counts. I know you are worried about Miss Nancy staying on the bed whilst you're traveling in case you have to brake hard. I guess securing a bad or dog basket would solve this. You could even use some netting the sort of thing they use on children's public play areas to put up temporarily whilst you traveling so if Miss Nancy lurches forward due to heavy braking she will be cushioned by the netting and wouldn't therefore fall off the bed. Does she hate travelling in your car?

I wasn’t glad to see the mist at first but i really enjoyed it when we were outside! She much prefers travelling in the car. I don’t think she likes driving full stop to be honest but at least she hops up into my car without all the drama so it isn’t so stressful, and that’s all I old ask for really! I might look at doing that in the van, I am honestly really confused the way forward at the moment and it feels like grime is moving really fast toward some conclusion 🤣🫣

@@missnancysdayoff I'm just wondering if she's had a bad experience in a van at some point in her young life. Maybe it's the way they transport the greyhounds to sporting events, perhaps she was in a van that was involved in an accident 🤔. She definitely has a negative association to the van. It may be worthwhile consulting with a dog behavioralist to try and ascertain what might be causing it as it's something that might be resolvable which would be a win for both of you. It would allow both of you a greater level of freedom. 🙂

@Melatiah I agree I think it must trigger some past trauma from her racing days. And I can hardly blame her. Then she also had some bad experiences in this van a couple of times when we started out and it was only partly finished and something would fall over for instance so I didn’t help there it’s been mistake upon mistake! If I had tons of money I would try and find as behaviourist but I think it’s going to have to wait, and I am also starting to make peace with the idea that she may never like that van. But I definitely want the greater level of freedom! I know I am more sensitive than a. Lot of people and I try not to be but that’s something I have to accept as well, that the of stressing her out makes me feel stressed. I need a behaviourist too 🤣🤔

@@missnancysdayoff You come across as a real empath, maybe try to view your sensitivity as part of your authentic self, practice self acceptance. Rather than viewing it as a part of you that you wish to get rid of. This may help you come into a harmonious balance with time. I think our pets come into our life for a reason and we learn and grow with them. Although it seems desperate at times I think when you look back on these times you will understand the true purpose of your coming together. You are as you should be without defects as is Miss Nancy, try not to feel guilty for the way you are. 🙂 My friend was able to get a behavioralist through pet insurance. Maybe that is an option?

@Melatiah I think your right. And I don’t really want to get rid of it, but I suppose part of the challenge is finding ways to deal with things positively and practically if that makes sense? Miss Nancy has certainly changed my life, it’s quite the journey in a lot of ways. I do need to try and stop guilting myself it’s not a pointful thing really 🙏 sadly I don’t think my insurance covers that but it’s worth checking! Although right now I will settle for her betting better physically even if she refuses to ever get in the van again 😖

You are not alone, my partners little dog loves going to places in the van, Loves the Beach, loves the walks, Loves the nights spent in the camper, but when we start to move to a new location she hates every moment of travelling, we just hope that she will get used to it

Oh my goodness, what a beautiful adventure ! ❤ Your love shines through for Nancy, she is such a gentle soul. My wife and I love your channel, our Lurcher cross, Daisy, is my wife's saviour after losing her parents......I am sure Miss Nancy loves you endlessly and appreciates all that you share and do for her. Our Daisy does not enjoy the journeys in our VW van but she knows that once the engine stops more fun, adventure and love is just a sliding door away..... Thank you for your honesty and sharing xxxx

Yes, the VW is just like driving a car to be honest. We are now considering selling it as my wife was recently diagnosed with fibromyalgia and struggles to sleep in the van😢, we have bought a caravan on the coast here in Norfolk which suits us better. I do miss having the opportunity to jump in the van and drive anywhere though......the freedom to travel is wonderful. I instantly recognised the scenery from the video, our youngest son lives in Newton Abbot and we have been to the beautiful moors in the past. I hope Miss Nancy doesn't get too stressed with the travelling, we have tried some herbal calming remedies with Daisy in the past, (it's a long drive from Norfolk to Devon) and she wasn't so stressed after talking them. Sending you both much love x

Hi tori , just a thought - if the bed is miss nancys safe space then have you thought about letting her travel whilst back there ? Add a harness fixing point and maybe a net across the bed to protect her from falling when travelling , you can still see her and she may feel way better about travelling that way ? Anyway love dartmoor and wonderful video in the mist!

Hello, maybe you are right I wanted her to know that when she was up there we wouldn’t drive so that she wouldn’t just refuse to get in the van at all, but given that things aren’t going perfectly perhaps a new approach is worth a try! 🙏

I thoroughly enjoyed Misty Dartmoor with you and Miss Nancy. Looks like heaven to me I love mist just makes me thing of Jane Eyre. Me and my husband have had Greyhounds for 11 years now we have had two boys and two girls thus far (first two we lost early in to cancer and a seizure.) currently have our boy Shadow who is 10. And all I can say what I have learnt is there nothing And I mean nothing more stubborn in this world than a Greyhound who has decided it isn’t going to do what it is being asked. It’s like they suddenly become aware of their size and power and can transform into stone! It is upsetting but you are doing what is best for Nancy I. Don’t see as bullying at all. You could move to a house or flat and she could just decide she’s freaked out by something else so don’t worry about your van life and driving. Nancy has a fantastic life and owner!

took my friend and her kids on holiday, her daughter was only 7 at the time, we pulled in at a car park on the moor, miniature horses ran up to us.. 7 year old melted in the most brilliant way.. one of the coolest moments ever. She got to live in a fairy tale kingdom for a day! Only broken by her brother occasionally saying "this is lame"... however... i did catch him stroking a horse !! Wrap the little blighters up and take them, it's magical.

Amazing, it’s easy to forget all the animals that live there then they are suddenly by the road or walking up to you! That sounds like such a special trip, let’s face it boys sometimes feel obliged to say things are lame and 😉

Hi you could follow every one else who have lived in a van for two to three years as your thinking of miss Nancy putting her first stop travelling in a van settle in one place but that’s harder than most think you need money lots of and a place to buy in a place you would like to live what a puzzle

To be honest that would be cool, it doesn’t sounds original as you say everyone is doing it but some land to build a tiny house or renovate something old is a dream I’ve had for the past decade. Definitely requires some cash to get started though. I’m not quite sure where we would want to be yet! Definitely a puzzle 🧩🙈

I'd say MN is ready for the old dog's home, all she wants to do is eat and sleep; not having to spindly leg it up hill and down dale. I tried tried doing some walking exercise recently on the long balcony hrtr by walkin up and down it several times; I'm now in recovery with an oxtgen mask on.

Great adventure with yourself and Nancy once again very Wycliffe 😊. I struggle sometimes with my two girls as well sometimes I feel there’s a battle for control going on just wondering does Nancy play with balls you could try having a tennis ball or something like that and bounce it around the van that might get a move on her without forcing her just a thought. That last village you were in is a very quaint little spot beautiful place best wishes from us here.

I’m not sure I would sell my house and live in my van full time if I had the option, being able to come back and doing your washing has to be a big bonus 😊 But it might work for you! I know how you feel about Nancy and the driving. I have a rescue doggie who gets car sick. I really really want to go off on lovely long walks with him to different places, but I feel soooo mean making him get in the car (using treats to tempt him) so I've started using the train to get to some places, which he loves. I'm hoping in time he'll be ok with it, but in the meantime it's short journeys only. They come first don't they, I love the way you care for Nancy 💖

Oh thank you that makes me feel better. It is very tough! So he likes the train, I never took Miss Nancy I assumed she would hate it but perhaps we should give it a go! It is hard because Nancy absolutely loves gong to new places for walks, really thrives on quiet wild places, but yeah can’t stand the van, and doesn’t exactly adores cars. So it’s a balancing act that I worry i don’t get right. 🙏💕

@@missnancysdayoff I truly sympathise, I'm in exactly the same position. I started off just walking along the platform with Tommy to get him used to it, then watching a train come and go. Then hopped on one just for a 5 minute journey. He was restless at first but settles down now, unless there's scraps of food to find, he's such a scrounger! We've only actually done 15 minutes but I think he'd be ok on a longer journey. I can't walk past the station without him wanting to go on the platform now, and pulling to get on the train if one comes in 😂 Good luck with Nancy and love the vlogs 💖

Hi Tori, funny enough my greyhound lately has gone quite stubborn, occasionally refusing to walk in a certain direction. I don't force her. It just means she dictates the route 😅 dog wins 🏆 I've tried all the tastiest treats, but she's not for turning.

I don't think the dog really hates driving. It probably has more to do with dogs not having thumbs or being able to grip the steering wheel properly or being able to reach the pedals. That's a lot of stress on the poor animal. 😁

Hey Pops I hope you are good! We are ok thank you, yes Miss Nancy definitely knows what she wants 🫣 ooh good question, do you already have a vehicle? My thoughts now after having built out my van is that I would start with a super simple conversion in the vehicle I already had to see if my dog and me enjoyed the trips I was thinking of before committing to spending loads of money on buying something or doing a complicated conversion. I’m actually doing that now in my car a super simple removable set up to try things out. Then if we like it I might do a more complex conversion. I’m sure you have the skills to do a conversion if you want, I think I’ve learned that it take a lot longer than you think it will and costs way more money 😂 but perhaps your a better planner than me! @missnancysdayoff those were great points and advice. I have a car, but where I live, there aren't many places/parks that allow overnight parking, but I'll try camping in it. I'm considering moving as well. I've been looking for undeveloped land in multiple places (including other countries). I will need a camper to check out the lands prior to buying and to stay on the land(s). P.S. if I own the land, I, probably, can camp on it. LOL (probably!!!). I saw some undeveloped land in the southeast, Midwest, Portugal, and Spain. Let's see who takes the cake. Please, say hello to Ms. Nancy for me. Pops

Dartmoor is amazing verily ❤️ It did turn out so atmospheric, yes quarry life continues testing a few before I make it permanent 🤣 Yeah didn’t want to be a downer but also that’s just the reality. The peanut butter is my best trick but she won’t go for it if she is upset enough 😖 Me and Little Miss have patched things up she is very forgiveing, sadly she is still not well vets again today I begin to despair x🙏💕

Very important to test as many quarries as possible, it has to be the right one, imagine the chaos if the cake delivery went to the wrong one! I guess there will always be ups and downs, Miss Nancy definitely knows what she likes and doesn’t like, but I reckon she loves her mum so much that she will give in eventually, peanut butter normally works for me too! Dogs pick up on your anxiety. Nancy being nervous about driving makes you nervous, thus a bit of a cycle. I know my dog picks up on my anxiety sometimes if I am feeling upset or down. He usually comes over to me for a snuggle. I'd just leave Nancy on the bed when driving, would she sleep? Have a hook on the back door or something where you can strap her in with a lead. Hope you figure it out would be a shame if you had to sell your van x A field and a barn and a veg patch somewhere maybe, least you can have a base. That's my plan anyways, house prices are crazy. Good luck x

You’re right it is a vicious circle and I’ve been working to try and not get to concerned about things myself I’m better than i was but it still gets to me when we end up having these disputes 🙈 She can’t sleep when I am driving she does patty’s extremely heavily the entire time and looks likes she’s about to hyperventilate. I probably shouldn’t even say that or someone will come take her away! I long for a field a barn and a veg patch. I’ve actually decided (pretty much this week) to make it a proper plan so there is something to aim for, and go find where I’d want this field to be! House prices are ridiculous and I’d honestly rather park the van, or build a tiny hose, love a project. Thank you 🙏 x ps MIss Nancy says thank you guys so much for the cookie tokens, her beastly mother took her to the vets again today so she is look forward to getting a tasty reward 😍

@missnancysdayoff oh dear try not to worry. There must be a way to make the driving experience better for her, might be alot of trial and error. She has her bed underneath, maybe under there when driving. Or toys to distract her. It's a tough one for sure. Music for dogs lol. I'd try anything to be honest. Sure you guys will get there. I'd say North Yorkshire as its beautiful but I'm bias on that. Or maybe Wales or Scotland. Or Ireland might be cheaper? I'd like to start preparing for the coming Zombie apocalypse and live in a secret place off grid.. 🤣

Call me a conspiracy theorist LOL but we are usually right 9 times out of 10. So I'll stick with what I know and my gut feeling 😉 Hopefully you can travel more with Nancy I think it would be good to visit more places, wish I could right now. But have responsibilities first for a while.

For me, the 2 hardest parts of living with an animal or rescue work with domestic/wild animals are making decisions that are contrary to their immediate desires and never really having enough time to give each animal the one on one attention most of them desire. I always feel awful. Certain they think I’m bossy, selfish, annoying, aloof, heartless..,a benevolent dictator at best. But actions must be taken to keep everyone as content and healthy as possible. Nevertheless, they seem to forgive and, dare I say, actual like me. Virtually every animal rescue person I’ve ever met has the same struggles.

it’s so tough, I’d love to do work with a rescue or foster but i do wonder if i could really cope with it, it’s definitely difficult emotionally. animals are incredibly forgiving it’s true, they have such pure hearts.

@@missnancysdayoff There are some animal rights/welfare activists who are committed to repeatedly exposing themselves first-hand to the horrific consequences of anthropocentrism. Cheers to them. Unfortunately, the burn out rate is high in the absence of coping mechanisms. Others judiciously manage that exposure. Whatever it takes to maintain sound mental health or one becomes useless. Empathy and compassion does make life more challenging. But the good news, Tori, is there are practically countless ways to sustainably contribute to the well-being of nonhuman animals or Nature, in general, without becoming emotionally drained. There is no switch for you or any of us to flip that suddenly makes everything on Earth right. So, you/we do the possible. It’s okay, perhaps even essential, to enjoy our lives while being part of the solution. Happy days.
