The "Other Guy" everyone is referring to in the comments is named "Mendez". He is the first leader of the irradiated humans that live in the forbidden city post Governor Kolp. In "Beneath The Planet of the Apes", the leader of the telepathic mutant humans is named "Mendez the 16th". There is even a hallway of bust statues in "Beneath" that the gorillas smash which are all of the previous Mendez leaders. One of the church scenes in "Beneath" shows an organ being played and the sheet music title is "Mendez 2".

The final deleted scene does indeed help to bring the original POTA series full circle. I too saw this sequence when it first aired on CBS. This is a crucial scene that helps to explain how the doomsday bomb came to be worshipped in BENEATH THE PLANET OF THE APES, as well as the beginnings of the Mendez cult…all this insures that the cycle repeats itself, bringing us all the way back (or in this case, ahead) to 3955 and the events of PLANET OF THE APES, and indeed the entire APE series repeats again, proving that history cannot be changed, no different than you cannot go back in time to prevent, say, the JFK assassination or 9/11, fron happening.

OL J R :)
@lukestrawwalker
@lukestrawwalker 2 жыл бұрын
@@Foxonian Not in Taylor/Zaius/Zira/Cornelius's timeline from the first and second films... Cornelius testifies to the Presidential Commission in the third film that he had been shown "secret scrolls and evidence" detailing their prehistory, that it all started with the disease that killed all dogs and cats. Humans took apes as pets, learned how smart and trainable they were, and over the next 300 years IN THEIR TIMELINE/PREHISTORY that apes went from being taught simple tricks to being smart enough and taught how to cook, clean, do the laundry, go to the store for the shopping with a list from their master, etc. It took another 300 years for them to get smart enough to figure out that they were slaves, and for one of them, and ape named "ALDO" (NOT General Aldo, the "Aldo" in Cornelius's prehistory would have lived around the year 2550, not 2010 or thereabouts when "Battle for the POTA" takes place) was smart enough to figure out the solution to slavery-- UNITY!, and to do something about it. Aldo led the ape revolt against the humans in their prehistory, and was the first to speak-- one day he uttered a word said time without number to him by humans-- he said, "NO!". Now Cornelius mentioned that about 600 years had passed between when the disease that killed dogs and cats started humans taking apes as pets, and the time when the apes rose up in revolt under Aldo. It was also spelled out that the evidence in the cave Cornelius was showing Zaius in the original film was about 1300/1400 years before their time in 3955/78... and Zaius mentioned as well as Cornelius in his testimony IIRC that the sacred scrolls had been written 1200 years before their time, so basically that puts the time of Aldo leading the ape revolt about 600-700 years after humans started taking apes as pets, and the sacred scrolls being written about 100 years later by the Lawgiver... IN THE ORIGINAL POTA TIMELINE. After Cornelius and Zira returned to Earth in Taylor's ship, THE TIMELINE CHANGED TO AN ALL NEW ONE. The newscaster said in one of the movies that the disease that killed dogs and cats came back with some of the astronauts from space-- whether that was from the 'apeonauts" Zira and Cornelius or Taylor's ship, with the germ "hitching a ride" back through time with them, or whether it was from another space expedition, we aren't told. It had to originate SOMEWHERE in the ORIGINAL timeline, as Zira and Cornelius DID NOT travel back through time in THAT timeline-- their arrival in the 20th century created a NEW timeline that the last 3 movies occur in, so all the "prehistory" that Zira and Cornelius knew was right out the window at that point! OL J R :)
@JayJay-nc7pr
@JayJay-nc7pr Жыл бұрын
Exactly this! The time line we saw in the first and second films had a completely different history, the ape rebellion/nuclear war took place around the years 2500-2700, with humans losing their voice some several hundred years later, Zira and Cornelius created a new timeline and therefore a new set of events, the alpha omega bomb had already been built in the late 1960s a few years before Taylor first set off on his journey, so that never changed since Zira and Cornelius arrived after its creation but it also shows that Mendez might’ve saved the future by hoping they would never use it.

Well for one thing when the Lawgiver was presenting at the start of the film, the year was 2670 A.D. Since 'Battle' was set in the early 21st century, there was really nothing to worry about the bomb going off or such, but still wondering if it'll then go off in the year 3955...or the year 3978? I guess it'll all depend on Taylor if he'll ever get a paycheck from ANSA off this nutty Project Liberty assignment.

The original VHS version released in the USA lacked these scenes, as did the original Theatrical Release in the USA. Why did they cut the scenes then? To provide a shorter running time, allowing them to show the film one more time per day in the theaters. The first DVD release also lacked these scenes, but a later DVD release included them -- finally! There was a PLANET OF THE APES release before the Blurays -- packaged inside a bust of Caesar as depicted in CONQUEST -- which included the 5 films, the 14 TV episodes, the 13 cartoon episodes, the Tim Burton 're-imagining', and the documentary BEHIND THE POTA, lacking only the Director's Cut of CONQUEST, which wasn't released until the Bluray edition. Ads a POTA fan, it always bothered me that we didn't get the 'full' version of BATTLE until later on, but we gotta remember that these sequels exist only because 20th Century-Fox needed to make money due to box office flops, and sequels to the popular PLANET OF THE APES were a sure thing financially. Even if they didn't make quite as much as the 1st film, the sequels -- each one being made on-the-cheap with smaller and smaller budgets each time -- were guaranteed to be profitable for the company. If squeezing in one more showing per day during the limited time they had for the theatrical run meant trimming a scene here and there, so be it. Let's just be glad that eventually that edited-out footage was later spliced back in. Maybe someday we'll get to see ALL the footage left on the cutting room floor, as DVD extras. There's a scene in BATTLE we've yet to see that was probably filmed, involving MacDonald and Teacher ["Abe"] being treated to an illegal meal of cooked rabbit just prior to the trip to the Forbidden City. When Virgil tells Mandemus that MacDonald needs a pistol in order to shoot, cook, and eat a rabbit during the 3-day journey, it implies that Virgil knows all about these illegal meals which violate Caesar's rule that Apes and Humans are to eat vegetarian fare only. Caesar probably knows about those rabbit-dinners, too, but looks the other way and doesn't enforce the rule 100% of the time. Caesar doesn't react all that surprised during that Mandemus scene when Virgil mentions the rabbit-shooting MacDonald might need to indulge in -- with Caesar's permission. I've purchased pretty much every VHS and DVD release of the POTA films, as well as 3 of the 5 laserdiscs, which was the only way to see them in widescreen before the DVD was invented. I'd be happy to buy yet another set of POTA films if they could include all the extra footage that was left on the cutting-room floor. C'mon, Fox, make it happen!

Supposedly the reason why these scenes were cut was ESCAPE, CONQUEST and BATTLE took place on the West Coast - while Planet of the Apes and BENEATH took place in New York City area. Hauling a nuclear missile across America would be extremely difficult. And even then - why bother doing it? Even so, its only a few minutes and should have been left in - already so many illogical plot points if you pick the movies apart. Like the Statue of Liberty existing for 2,000 years after NYC was flattened by one or more nukes. With ocean levels that high being pounded salt water - it would likely have collapsed into a pile of rust and dissolved into the ocean within 50 years - even if NYC wasnt nuked.

It's MUCH deeper than that-- it's about the choice between peaceful coexistence between humans and apes, or choosing to have a neverending emnity between humans and apes and continual confrontation and warfare til they eventually destroyed the world. The militarists, General Aldo for the apes and Governor Kolp for the mutants, want to have a final penultimate battle to decide who will survive and who gets wiped out, or who rules and who gets enslaved or driven out into the jungles, which of course would merely continue the struggle as the vanquished or enslaved seek to "live to fight another day" hoping for better luck next time... The pacifists, meaning Caesar and Virgil for the apes, the humans in the ape city, and Mendez for the mutants, advocate breaking the chain of violence and learning to live in peace, as equals (eventually). Mendez makes the speech about A destroying B who destroys C who is destroyed by D who destroyed E, etc... and tries to convince Governor Kolp of this, as well as pointing out the apes didn't "invade them", only carried weapons for self-defense, and while not human were HUMANE... Which of course Kolp cares nothing about... he just wants a war to alleviate his boredom and to "get even" with the apes, destroy them or subjugate them again... repeating the same old destructive cycle, and perpetuating it into the future. Caesar comes to realize that if there is to be a lasting peace, the humans and apes must learn to live together, so he frees the humans and it's implied he eventually orders they be treated as equals. The Lawgiver, teaching the class of human and ape children, that having had peace with apes and humans living together for 700 years since Caesar's time, they are finally at peace, but as the human child asks, "Lawgiver, who knows about the future?" Meaning the potential is always there as long as people are more dedicated to war than peace. It's just "human nature". Later! OL J R :)

I think he did know, but his hatred of the apes was such that he didn't care if the world was destroyed, as long as the apes were killed. Plus, dealing with that kind of radiation had likely driven whatever sanity he had away.

For 2000 years they resisted using it. They went through the activation sequence for their religious celebrations but never did the final act. Taylor did. Is the world Taylor comes to the world of "Beneath" where the domestic harmony after "Battle" endures or a world where the Lawgiver's words are redacted, and re written because, as Dr. Zaius says, "Man cannot be domesticated".

Brent isnt shown looking at the clock - could have looked at the clock as ship was decelerating and still far from Earth as the ship was likely damaged and out of control as it ended up crashing and burning (the none of the ships flight was shown on screen). Ships clock could have malfunctioned if ship systems were damaged while approaching Earth and speed dropped or Brents clock stopped working when it was still 3955 and ship was still far from Earth. Brents ship could have been damaged by a small space rock - it probably had no shields-that would explain why the ship landed in an uncontrolled crash. Besides alot of things dont make sense - like the Statue of Liberty not being destroyed by the shockwaves from the nuclear blast(s) that flattened New York City. Even if it survived theres no way a statue buried up to its chest made of steel and covered with a relatively thin skin of copper would last 2000 years. It would be lucky to still be standing after 50 years after WW III let alone 2000 years even if the city hadnt been nuked. Sea water is particularly corrosive.

Plz advise me on these doubts, * How did the humans who survived with Caesar become mute? Lost the power to talk? * Why dint the Mutants try to save the people in the surface and bring them to the underworld? * Apart from Caesar or his descendants. How did other apes start to speak? * The Mutants could have used their mind control over the attacking apes. * The Mutants could have helped Taylor to find the spacecraft and return to the past to warn and save mankind. Instead they wanted to kill Taylor?

Ok point by point: 1) How did humans surviving with Caesar become mute?? They didn't, because his is an ALTERNATE timeline. When Zira and Cornelius were hurled back in time from 3955 when the Alpha-Omega bomb destroyed Earth when Taylor set it off as he died, when they arrived in 1973 they changed history by their very presence. Hasslein ended up murdering them, but their baby survived with Armando and the circus and would end up leading the ape uprising CENTURIES before it had occurred in their prehistory... by about 600 years earlier than it occurred in Zira and Cornelius's history. This created a NEW ALTERNATE TIMELINE so the history of everything that happened, was very different. At the end of the first POTA movie, Dr. Zaius orders Cornelius to read the "29th Scroll" to Taylor-- "Beware the beast man, for he is the devil's pawn. Alone among God's primates, he alone kills for sport, or greed, or lust. Yeah, he will murder his brother to possess his brother's land. Do not let him breed in great numbers among you-- shun him, drive him back into his jungle lairs, for he will make a desert of his home, and yours." In THEIR prehistory, those words were written by the Lawgiver were the foundation of how they'd treated humans for 1,200 years. Apes drove humans out into the jungles, and destroyed their civilization totally, so they reverted to being animals, and lost the power of speech. In the ALTERNATE timeline after Zira and Cornelius's death in 1973, and the ape revolt led by their son Caesar in the 1990's 20 years later (Conquest of the POTA) and later still in the last film (Battle for the POTA), Caesar has to decide which path to choose-- driving the humans out and destroying them, or living in peaceful coexistence. The very last scene of "Battle" shows that he chose peaceful coexistence, so ALL HISTORY WAS CHANGED and the humans who survived with Caesar never became mute, as the little girl's question to the Lawgiver proves... 2) why did the mutants not try to save humans and bring them underground? They were evidently quite secretive, and from what we see in "Battle" they have apparently been quite content to live underground in the city, unconcerned about humans living elsewhere. The develop into sort of a cult that only becomes known when the gorilla army attacks them in "Beneath the POTA". 3) Apart from Caesar and his descendants, how did other apes begin to speak? This is answered by Cornelius in "Escape"... when he's testifying to the Presidential Commission. He explains he was shown "secret documents and evidence" about the apes' prehistory, how first came the disease that made dogs and cats go extinct, so humans took apes as pets instead. How the humans learned they could be easily trained and were quite intelligent, and how over time they became slaves... over the course of 3 centuries how the apes became able to do the cooking and cleaning and do the shopping with a list from their master, and how 3 centuries after that, they finally became smart enough to do something about it... an ape named "ALDO" (NOT the same one in the early 2000's in "Battle for the POTA") figured out the solution to slavery-- UNITY, and that he led the ape revolt. One day he said something, the first time an ape ever spoke, and he said a word told to him by humans innumerable times... he said NO!" SO, from this we can deduce that over a period of about 600 years of breeding for intelligence and training as slaves, the apes not only became self-aware but eventually acquired the power of speech... IN ZIRA AND CORNELIUS'S TIMELINE, THEIR HISTORY. Once they traveled back in time and had Caesar, they CHANGED the timeline, and of course Caesar had the power of speech, and LIsa, Caesar's wife, would be the first "non time traveling ape" to speak, when she said "NO" at the end of "Conquest of the POTA". They kinda short circuited the story there, because basically within maybe 20 years of the nuclear war, suddenly the apes in "Battle for the POTA" can not only talk and reason, but discuss temporal theory... quite a leap LOL:) But it IS only a movie... 4) The mutants could have used their mind control over the attacking apes-- No, that was the point of the "vision" they saw on their approach to the mutant city... the wall of fire, upside down crucified apes bleeding out, and the enormous statue of the Lawgiver that was bleeding... The mutants put that in their minds, but Zaius figured out it was a vision, and a lie, as Taylor did when he broke through the fake rock wall that they put in his path that "wasn't there" a few minutes before. Even the mutants themselves said the apes brains were "too primitive" to hold their illusions, which meant basically the apes were immune to the mutants effects, for the most part. 5) The mutants didn't care anything about Taylor or Brent-- they just wanted to pump them for information on their enemy, the APES. Taylor evidently didn't know much of value, and Brent knew virtually nothing about their plans to attack the mutants. If the mutants even believed Taylor or Brent's story about being astronauts and coming from space, they didn't care-- they had NO interest in helping them. Their sole concern was wiping out the apes. When Cornelius, Zira, and Dr. Milo traveled back to the past, it wasn't because Taylor's ship was a "time machine", it's because the destruction of the Earth by the Alpha/Omega bomb released SO much energy that it created some sort of "time tornado" that hurled Taylor's ship back 2000 years into the past... Taylor and his crew travelled forward in time by virtue of the Einstein theory (fact) that time travels more slowly for the passengers of a ship as it approaches light speed. SO their trip of about a year (the first movie begins 6 months out of Cape Kennedy with Taylor's speech before he goes into his stasis chamber, and they arrive 6 months after that on the planet of the Apes, they believe to be "orbiting a star in the belt of Orion", arguing over whether its Bellatrix (one of the stars in Orion's belt, which BTW only APPEAR close to each other from Earth, but are actually very far apart "front to back" but appear "side-by-side" when viewed from Earth... ) While only a year had passed for Taylor and his crew, 2000 years had passed on Earth. The mutants wanted to kill Taylor and Brent because they were of no use to them, and could be a potential enemy... Hope that helps! OL J R :)

@@lukestrawwalker You are correct in all of this, and one would be lead to believe that history did indeed change. However, when viewing POTA, you also have to keep in mind the 2,000 year difference _a lot._ Even today, if you read back to things that occurred 2,000 years ago? It has a lot of myth and mystery, miracles even including with a person called Jesus Christ. Keeping this in mind, _these_ are also records without a nuclear holocaust. Whenever even great libraries are burnt and destroyed, more myths are created, and this is heavily implied by Dr. Zaius, who eradicated records that were not written by Apes. This causes some characters in history to be shunned and exalted, some even merge to become one person with their accomplishments, THIS has happened in real life even. So far, in POTA, you only get to see the story up to 2,500 A.D. (600 years of a lot of change), implying a huge leeway of events that can still happen in 1,500 years, many events that can still occur for history to be remembered as we see in 3,950 A.D. With the way POTA was written, and you see how things can change in 600 years; it is left to the reader's imagination that a lot can still change in 1,500 years for history to be remembered differently to align with the original movie. Had it continued, you might have seen in 2,500 A.D. an Ape (perhaps of Aldo's lineage, sharing the same name) that viewed Caesar's ideology to be erroneous, to the point of trying to get Caesar expunged from history, villainizing humans even further, and putting in that extra piece to the jigsaw puzzle to why those humans couldn't speak. Changing what was written even further, and explaining why there was a wide schism to keep information about humans ever being smart in a conspiracy to hide all that truth. Dr. Zaius may have known many things, but even he probably didn't know about Caesar due to the ravages of time... or maybe he did, he could have been a descendant of Aldo.
