_"ALA is soluble both in water and fatty environments, allowing it to be a unique antioxidant that can protect all parts of your body. ALA also serves to recycle other antioxidants such as vitamin C, vitamin E and glutathione. Although the mechanism is still unclear, ALA improves uptake and use of glucose and other nutrients by some action on the insulin receptor. Insulin sensitivity and peripheral neuropathy in those with Type 2 diabetes and other metabolic disorders may be improved by ALA supplementation. ALA is best absorbed on an empty stomach, one to two hours before eating. Up to 1,600 mg per day for six months and 1,200 mg per day for two years have been well tolerated in studies, according to the Linus Pauling Institute."_

I recently saw a video about this supplement reducing the burning and the stabbing pain in my feet and part of my leg.. I think some of the pain is from my flat feet and sciatica. I wear custom arc supports from my foot Dr. . I still get pain from being on the concrete floors at work a lot. My triglycerides have been in the good range even though I'm about 40 lbs over weight. I started taking the Alpha Lipoic Acid for about 5 weeks now to see if it would help with my neuropathy. About 2 weeks in, I felt less intensity. I went from 400 mg to 600 mg and I have to say my Nerve pain has been reduced by about 80% now. I no longer have the pain when I lay down at night. If I don't wear my arc supports, the pain, though not as intense will be there. From what I saw, it appears this supplement helps your nerve outer sheet to repair itself. I can see where it would cause pain if the protective outer sheath is thin or gone. Now that I feel less pain, I'm going to get back on the elliptical now to loose some weight!

There are concerns regarding taking ALA (or R-LA) if you have "silver fillings" (which, as is well know, have a high mercury content and leak some mercury into the body) or mercury toxicity (from eating fish, for instance). I imagine this would be particularly bad for people with many and deep silver fillings. Have you ever looked into this?

@carolvogel20083 жыл бұрын
Does the ALA help anybody with their neuropathy? I was told I have idiopathic neuropathy, basically they don't know what it's cause is.
@John-Nada3 жыл бұрын
@@carolvogel2008 My understanding is it typically involves poor circulation and capillary damage around nerves caused by chronically high insulin and ingestion of seed oil PUFAs. So you can start to reverse it using a low carb keto diet, and by displacing the dangerous PUFAs in your body over time with healthy omega 3 PUFA oils from animal foods like canned herring and sardines, pasture-raised eggs, grass-fed beef and from supplements like vitamin B1 (benfotiamine) and ALA. After about a year of this regimen my neuropathy symptoms are disappearing. You can't rely on supplements alone, it really requires dietary changes.
