Camera Review: The Alpha A6600 is Sony's new flagship APS-C camera.
My A6600 eBook about how to set up the A6600 is a complimentary download for members of the Sony Alpha ‘Premium’ tier on Patreon: / markgaler
The A6600 has all of the great new features we first saw in the A6400 camera, including the 180° Tiltable Screen and ultra-reliable AF-Tracking. It also features the In Body Image Stabilisation (SteadyShot Inside) of the A6500, the larger Z series battery from the third generation of A7 cameras and a headphone Jack. There are also many upgrades to the firmware that makes this a very interesting package for those photographers who decided to wait to see what the successor to the A6500 would bring. In this camera review I highlight the advantages of IBIS and take a look at the more interesting updates to the firmware.

Mark Galer is the only ‘influencer’ I watch on KZfaq for Sony gear. Mark’'s not an overzealous/fanatical salesperson like many other influencers are (and that is the reason I stopped watching their videos). Without any fluff, loaded with facts and useful information, this video, like his other videos, respects viewers’ time. I appreciate it. Thanks, Mark Galer.

Great video Mark! Lovely camera, I just don’t need to upgrade right now. It’s been my first year with the a6500 and I’m still satisfied with the video quality. I can’t wait to see the next installment of apsc bodies Sony releases. By then, they will have something that is undeniably solid and worth upgrading to. 4K60fps+, 10 or 12bit, 300-500mbps; they may just totally blow us away.

Thanks again for the great review. It’s always good to get your perspective Mark. Those handheld long exposure shots are fantastic! I would think, aside from someone already having a complete lens lineup, the a6600 would end Olympus’ line of cameras. With the extra sensor size and much better autofocus capabilities. The a6600 has really made me rethink upgrading to the a7riv. Since I own the a7riii, this body would be perfect for street photography and all around photography with the smaller footprint and enhanced speed. The autofocus technology is truly stunning.

I have been using an A6400 as my second camera to either my A9 or my A7Rlll since it was released and may never go back to using two full frame bodies. The inclusion of the Z series battery will end the need to run two different sets of batteries for me and the IBIS means my heavy tripods stay at home.

great updates Mark. I still have my a6500, a6000 and NEX7 so I may sell the latter 2 and upgrade to the a6600 and have my a6500 as my 2nd camera. I always shoot with 2 cameras as I shoot primes and dont want to switch lenses if I can limit it. I love that it now has the bigger grip and better battery. Sad they didnt add the 2 level Fn menu for Stills/Video like on the A7R4 but hope they can add that in a later firmware? Im sure many are still wanting a A6700/a7000 with the NEX7 dual wheel setup but I dont think that will ever happen now. They should have used / upgraded the SD card slot to UHS-II though even if they only kept it at 1 slot not 2

I would say this year is the second wave of Sony crop bodies because for the past 3 years Sony solely focus on full frame gears. I think the release of 3 crop bodies in a single year shows they push the full frame tech into smaller body. And perhaps they have more awesome ideas for future full frame camera cooking in their lab right now.

Excellent review. I'm leaning to get either the a6600 or Canon 90D. Both with their kit lens. The 90D is cheaper with easier menu. But the a6600 is sleeker with unlimited 4k video recording and great photos but has slower SD 1 card reader. RRP is NZ$2,499 90D and NZ$3,100 for the a6600. May go for the A6600. Will save up to get between June and September this year. I live in NZ. I noticed this camera suffers from rolling shutter when it comes to 4k video recording. Is there an option to turn off the electronic shutter?

Mi Mark, I really appreciate the in-depth review. Would you recommend this camera above my current a6500 camera for shooting strictly stills of sports and wildlife, with small amounts of landscape? I don't shoot portraits. Or would you advise to wait for a further iteration down the road. Thanks again
@AlphaCreativeSkills

The major improvements over the A6500 is the battery life (more than double) and the AF Tracking performance which is twice as reliable when capturing fast-moving sports and wildlife. if you are not in a hurry I would either wait for some discounts to appear on this model or for the next model to be announced. There is still room for some further improvements and these include a USB-C I/O port, UHS-II Memory-Card Slot and a Front Dial.

Mark, your product explanations are the best. Very well done! And your hand hold shooting skills are legendary. Just one question : any news about the eye tracking in video to be added to a6400 via firmware? As for the a6600 (and, why not, a6400) , just the 4k 60fps is missing. With new sony bodies and glasses at the price range of 1500$, I am afraid that fuji xt3 remains the queen of apsc.
@AlphaCreativeSkills
@AlphaCreativeSkills 4 жыл бұрын
One would hope SONY will backdate some features via a firmware update. I don’t believe there is a technical reason the eye Tracking in movies could not be added as the A6400 probably has the processor to deal with the processing demands.

Hi Mark, I find your videos so informative that I am seriously considering exchanging my Fuji equipment for Sony. 24 meg sensor is sufficient for my needs but my priority would be the most accurate eye af and autofocus tracking that is in the superior A9 which is a bit above my budget at the moment. Could you please suggest the best A9 alternative solely for the eye af and autofocus tracking, no need to consider any other options. Many thanks.
@AlphaCreativeSkills
@AlphaCreativeSkills 4 жыл бұрын
The only other full frame Alpha that has the new tracking algorithms is the A7RlV. You will need to wait for the A7IV or look at the A6400 and A6600 cameras to get the Tracking capability. No other interchangeable lens camera currently offers blackout free shooting. The A9 cameras are unique in this regard.

Thanks Mark, good review; I also expected a better body with front dial within that better grip, a better sensor around 36MP with better low light capabilities. The beauty of these APS-C cameras is weight as you mentioned (body+lens), something you will not get with the A7iii. The rumored baby A9 is still not here. I have the A6500 which does a fantastic job; I do not see any reason to upgrade, the larger battery, extra custom button and so on does not appeal to me yet.

@rcpanorama - its very difficult to get better high ISO per and still have more MP they are contradicting each other, hence why the A7S series (low loght / high ISO king of the hill) is only a 12MP camera. you have to have either low MP with great low noise or high MP (like the a7R4) but sacrafice the higher noise issues.

The E 50 F1.8 is a solid performer but I have not tried to shoot action / sports with this lens. I usually use the FE 85F1.8 or the telephoto zooms to capture rapidly moving subjects as I usually need more reach than the 50mm focal length provides.

very good review, most reviewers are busy bashing 6600 s features , what matters most is picture and video quality , which u have clearly shown is superb. IBIS feature makes vast difference in sharpness and quality of picture, also since the launch of 6400 , in almost a year the JPEG engine improves to give better saturated and polished colors. video looks extremely sharp and with nice color and detail. planning to buy 6600 after a long time from the early sony . p92.

Mark, great review of features. I am still on the fence about upgrading my small Sony, as I was ready to pre-order today the rumored a7000 (mini a9). I was pleased to see G series APS-C lenses. I saw at least one of your examples used the 18-135. I am deciding between the 18-135 and the new 16-55 G f2.8. I tend to shoot landscape and long exposure at f 9-11. The 18-135 is smaller and lighter, and I have seen good reviews for sharpness. If Sharp, small, then light are my priorities would I gain much going with the new 16-55 G f2.8? I want a small APS-C mid-range zoom I can get high quality images with to go with my 10-18 f4, and 20mm f2.8 pancake.
@AlphaCreativeSkills
@AlphaCreativeSkills 4 жыл бұрын
The news of a new telephoto zoom was of most interest to me (more reach and less weight compared to the FE telephoto zoom lenses). The standard zoom looks great for photographers who don’t want to use primes. I currently use the 10-18, 18-135 zooms and three or four primes (Rokinon 12mm, FE 35, FE 55, FE 85)

Thanks Mark. I went back to your APS-C lens reviews (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mrpikq6T3Ku4pZs.html) and you were very pleased with the sharpness of the 18-135. @RayStephenson 4 жыл бұрын
@@sjsphotog That is generally the case, why I take f4 lenses for the reduction in size, weight and cost. They do leave some gaps, that the 24mm f1.4 fills in nicely. I recently took it on a Cave tour, lit only by provided flashlights, and handheld. Shooting at f1.4 with Steadyshot on did much better than I expected. I have the Sigma 14mm f1.8, but its size and weight makes it impractical for many trips, so I think I'll settle for 24mm for stars most of the time as well.

I have the a7riii. I use it for BIF and was hoping for a larger sensor in the apc to benefit from the 1.5 crop factor. Now I'm thinking I should upgrade to a a7riv, but wonder if the af on the a7riv is that much better than the 7riii or should I hope for a a9ii? I'm worried that sony won't go above 24meg sensor except for their r line. I've missed alot of shots with failure to focus on the 7r3 that I know the a9 would get, but then the a9 is only at 24 meg, with no crop factor. the 200-600 will help but its not enough reach. I want the black out free, but need more reach/resolution. I'm trying to print up to 36 x 54 so I need the resolution. I also would print up to 4 x 8 for landscape so the 61 meg would be nice on the a7r4. How does the af compare from the a9 to the a6600, a7r4? thanks Your channel is the best, most helpful!

I was impressed with my results for photos, (not a video guy). But, I found my preference for taking low to very low light shots suffered without IBIS. And, I travel a lot and when doing so prefer to avoid a tripod. Mark. Would you consider the A6600 a useful upgrade for myself? If there is someone serious, it's you, Sir. Please ask Sony what's preventing them from making AN ACTUAL APS-C FLAGSHIP, with the a7 series body form factor/size, dual card slots, front dial, and joystick. While the new battery implementation in the APS-C camera is a nice touch, removing the built-in flash unit for no apparent reason makes me wonder what is Sony thinking... It's very underwhelming that the a6600 is what it is now... All I can say is that this is the inevitable update to the A6500 - for all we know Sony may have an A6700 and A6900 on their test beds right now. I am not entirely sure why people are surprised as the A6500 was awkwardly positioned in the model lineup after the release of the A6400. What does not surprise me is how many people are always disappointed with whatever Sony announces, e.g. the A7RlV was not an A7Slll or A9ll but it was an improved R, which just goes to remind me of that old saying “you can please some people some of the time, but you can’t please all the people all of the time.”

I'm relieved that it has the same body style as the a6500. If I want a7 styling, I'd buy an a7-something. I'm also quite happy that the pop flash is gone - is one less place for rain to sneak into the camera's innards. I think I've used the pop flash on my a6500 exactly zero times. Dual card slots are nice, but when did they become necessary? You don't even need to be old to remember the time when they were still uncommon.

@@AdamHouston your logic is flawed. Why should people have to pay for fullframe camera and its associated pricetag if they simply want crop sensor camera with features seen on Sony fullframe cameras minus the sensor size? I really hope your logic isn't Sony actual logic... Ah, btw. I do remember the old Sony a700 having dual card slots... Dual card slot is there just in case the photographer needs it. That's how a photographic equipment manufacturer company should think.
@rzero21
@rzero21 4 жыл бұрын
@@AlphaCreativeSkills sure, Sony might not be able to please everyone, but dual card slot should have been a feature present on it, considering a7-series cameras already had it for some time. Fuji XT-3 and X-H1 has it and they're the main competition. The same goes for front dial. Sure, people was disappointed when Sony announced the A7RIV but it was because many people in the media and forums agree that it felt quite odd to release a new R considering the a7RIII is still fairly relevant and the a7SIII is long overdue.
@AlphaCreativeSkills
@AlphaCreativeSkills 4 жыл бұрын
The A7RIV has not replaced the A7RIII and the A7RIII did not replace the A7RII. This would be Canon or Nikon business practice but it is not Sony's. Different models will most likely be developed by different teams who are set price-point objective working at different speeds to overcome different hurdles. Maybe there is a team working on an A7000 with dual card slots, stacked BIS and bigger body design. But this wouldn't replace the A6500, price point of feature set, and the A6600 is just this camera.

Does it have the dreaded 30m recording limit?

I am aware that B&H are saying that the 30 minute recording limit is still in place. I was using a pre-production model of the A6600 so I would check the final specifications before ordering the camera if this feature is important.

Interesting, I also purchased the SONY A6600 but the image resolution only goes up to 20mp? under JPEG menu image sizes L-20M, M-10M and S-5.1M I thought this camera produced 24M images?
@AlphaCreativeSkills

It does - those alternate sizes are for when you have cropped in camera already by setting the Aspect Ratio to 16:9 instead of the full 3:2 Aspect Ratio of the sensor.

APS-C zooms are tiny compared to Full Frame zooms. If you don’t want to use zooms on the A7C I would purchase the full frame.

I expected a new bigger body and something like a mini A9. This upgrade is ok but it could have been better. I'm into wildlife and need fast blackout shooting and fast buffer clearing. I don't think this A6600 can provide that.

Can this camera shoot in 4K/30P without any limits by time and Gb? I need shoot 3 hours video at once by one file. And I need exactly 30.000 fps!!! Not 29.970fps!!! Is it possible with this camera???
@AlphaCreativeSkills
@AlphaCreativeSkills 4 жыл бұрын
Frame rates are listed as 24 and 30 in NTSC (25 and 50 in PAL) and there is no limit to recording time so long as the camera does not have to shut down due to overheating

@@AlphaCreativeSkills Sorry, but NO. There is no such thing like 30.000 fps in photo cameras. Only 29.970fps available. You can check it in EXIF

the 6600 doesnt replace the 6400 its 1 step ABOVE it but from the same family (a6100, 6400, 6600 are current 3 tiered family vs the a6000, a6300 and a6500 was the previous 3 tiered APSC system with the older tech)

Nice preview but i my opinon the camera will be too expensive for the little it offers more to the a6400 if it´s true that it will be 2k with the 18-135 the a6400 sells now here for 1,3k.Guess i will get the a6400 then.

@@GungFuMaster makes sense when i wrote that comment i haven´t checked the specs for the a6100 and it really has just a EVF which is worse?anyway i´ll have to see where the pricing ends for the a6100 because body only for the 6400 is here around 950 and for the 6100 they said it will be around 900 here which sounds a bit odd to me

@@AlphaCreativeSkills fair enough for that point. but for me what i want to do get some nice pictures of my dogs and when out hiking,mountain biking and stuff the 46RAW are enough and i guess if i really need more it would be fine for me to use JPEG.so for me it´s not worth to pay the 700bucks more for what kinda small adavantges it would give me.I rather get some nice lenses for the 700.Which will be more versitaile for me i guess.
