The best and most informative ambassador!! The Laowa lenses have no contacts no lens info! I like the Voigtlander 10mm f/5.6 LR has Lens correction and yes a NISI Filter holder but if you use a Mark 2 or below Sony A7 camera you can use Sony PlayMemories app "Digital Filters". If you can drop a line to Sony (hint) ask for Sony PlayMemories to be used on the Mark 3 cameras also, even if they have to be put on a SD card if no room. Also as you have mentioned other place if you shot a jpeg the camera gives a lens correction (you pay for it) and a jpeg can be worked in post. Believe it or not the Voigtlander 10mm is also good for Milky Way Astro shooting and with the A7S, A7RM2 and A7M3 you get great shadow recovery and little noise at higher ISO to reduce in post just follow the NPF default rule of 22 seconds for a large nightscape and small Milky Way and fewer shots for panoramas.

In my opinion you are the best Sony ambassador. I always enjoy watching your videos. Just a side note, your glasses are very nice but I think they are little bit too big for you in my opinion.

Great to see a review of third party lens. Have yet to check on price, but imagine this lens would be significantly cheaper than Sony offerings. The lens speed would not be a problem for me as would have camera mounted on tripod as this very wide angle would be set at e.g f/8/11 .

A bit of a pain to deal with a circular polarizer isn't it? I guess you can hold the filter up to your eye, rotate to the proper place, then note where the "top" is, and then after installing on the back of the lens, make sure that the "top" of the filter would be where the top of the lens would be, after you rotate it onto your camera body? phew, just hurts thinking about it

I am not a big fan of circular polarising filters for ultra wide angle lenses as they do not darken the sky evenly. OK for water but this has limited use.

Sharp across the focal range - but not as sharp as Sony’s 12-24

That's anybody's guess as they don't have a lens release roadmap. I would guess that a MKII version of this lens will not be a priority.

Hi Mark, I enjoy your vids. I was hoping you could help me make a decision about lens choice. I Currently have the tamron 28-75, Sony 70-200 GM, and the 17-28 on the way. While I really enjoy the lenses I have, I’m left feeling that I need a little bit more particularly on the wide end. I haven’t tried the 17-28 yet, but if it’s as good as the 28-75 I’m sure I’ll be at least satisfied with the IQ, especially given the price. However, I know that 17mm isn’t wide enough for me at the wide end, having briefly owned the 16-35f4. The reason this matters is because, while I’m no pro, a friend of mine who works in real estate asked me if I’ve done real estate photography, which I haven’t, but based on what reviewers say and based on my experience with the 16-35, I need a lens that’s a little wider. I was considering the lens you reviewed in this video, but 10mm is way too wide. And because I normally don’t shoot ultra wide, I just wanted my widest zoom lens to be just wide enough to be able to do things like real estate photography, or just whenever I have to itch to shoot wide. I don’t know what to do because spending ~1000 (after tax) for the laowa isn’t that appealing because it’s not a lens I’ll use all the much. It feels like the sigma 14-24mm might be the way to go for me, but I don’t know how I feel about having the gap between 24-28. Also, while sigma lenses have really nice image quality, they’re always way heavier than alternatives and every sigma I’ve seen reviewed looked sluggish in terms of AF. It’s also about $500 more than the tamron. The Sony 12-24 could also be an option, but it’s even more expensive than the sigma, but at least it’s native glass so it should do better acquiring focus and it’s probably going to be a lot lighter. And they both have protruding front elements, which I don’t like. If you were in my situation, what would you do? Any advice would be appreciated. Keep up the good work with the videos sir

I happened to watch your videos and they are really informative! If I don’t need such a short focal length as 10mm or 11mm, will it do a trick to buy a 9mm APC-S lens and use it with a crop mode? What could be serious drawbacks compared to, say, 14mm or 15mm lenses? I am tempted to buy the small 9mm lens, since it’s really compact and easy to apply filters. :)
@AlphaCreativeSkills
@AlphaCreativeSkills 5 жыл бұрын
Crop mode on a 24 Megapixel camera is 10 Megapixels - if you crop to the 16:9 aspect ratio you will have just enough pixels to straighten a slightly crooked horizon. You also need to check the corner performance of the lens you are considering.

Mark Galer's Alpha Creative Skills Many thanks for a reply. After watching your video about the APS-C mode and trying it by myself, it would be okay to use the mode for general purposes, since I have an A7R ii. However, it makes me change my mind. I’d rather go for a full-frame wide angle lens and use it as if I have two lenses, which, I think, justifies a higher price. Thanks again!

Not every manufacturer makes 37mm filters, are there some good quality filter brands in this size? I’ve had trouble finding some from brands I trust.

Hi, please I need your advice. I have Sigma A-mount and I bought sony a9. So I need to buy conventer. Which one is better? Sony la-ea4 or Sigma mc-11SA-E? Thank you for your helpful.
@AlphaCreativeSkills
@AlphaCreativeSkills 5 жыл бұрын
If it is a focus by wire Sigma lens then it would be between the LA-EA3 adapter and the MC-11 adapter (not the LA-EA4). Unfortunately you will need to find a review of someone who has tested the precise combination as there are too many variables with non-sony lenses being adapted (some adapt well and some do not).

I can’t imagine using the 10mm focal length. I guess if you like capturing your feet in each shot. The 12-24mm f/4 is plenty wide. I guess this is an architectural dream though.

Would you recommend the Laowa or voigtlander 10mm?
@AlphaCreativeSkills
@AlphaCreativeSkills 4 жыл бұрын
Those are very different lenses as one is a prime and the other a zoom lens. If you don’t already own focal lengths between 12-18 then it would have to be the zoom.

I have heard that UV filters are useless for digital cameras. It was meant to filter out unwanted wavelength of light that film did not take too well. Is this a myth?
@AlphaCreativeSkills
@AlphaCreativeSkills 5 жыл бұрын
I don't use UV filters but have been advised that the UV filter on this lens and the one behind the FE 400 F/2.8 GM should not be removed - in order to preserve the optical performance.

But they are not really comparable. The GM has a bright aperture and super fast AF and it is the only F2.8 zoom with AF at 12mm. The Laowa is small and great for users who want to stop down to f/8 or f/11 for everything they do.
