I think these three lenses were released so the 'yet-to-be-released' FX-30 would have access to premium-quality wide-angle lenses. The 11mm is, however, a significant lens in Sony's APS-C lens lineup for A6700 users and also Full-Frame users wanting a light and portable landscape lens to shoot in APS-C mode. I have used it when travelling light with my A7RV to India.

I know when Sony send me an ultra-wide angle lens to review I am going to have to work a little harder to find the good locations that will let the wide angle of view shine. it's all about how close I can get to interesting stiff in the foreground. Deadman's beach for the 11mm was a great location for this - just had to try to keep the camera above the water ;-)

Glad it was helpful! I actively use an A1 Full-Frame system with heavier GM lenses, a compact A7C system with compact full-frame lenses and an APS-C system with a mixture of full-frame and APS-C lenses. Size comparison between systems is an important part of my workflow - especially when I will be carrying my choice around all day.
@networm64

And that reminded to me how better the design of that 20mm was indeed. IDK why Sony decided to shrink the space between the aperture ring and the focusing recently. Even though the sizes are more compact but still manageable to have a proper distance to prevent unwanted changes to either of them. Focus hold button should be placed in between.

Another good, and useful review. If we’re asking for features on a future APS-C body, I would like to add 1) Bird Eye AF, 2) 15-20 fps, 3) focus bracketing, 4) ~30MP sensor, 5) fast sensor readout to reduce tearing, and maybe 5) more programmable buttons.

Thanks Mark, another excellent review clearly highlighting the potential in APS-C. These new lenses look superb. I started my Sony journey with the a6500 before eventually gravitating to full frame ... a7r3, a9, a7r4 and now down to just one a7iv body. I'm already spoilt for choice owning 12 Sony lenses. I retained my first 16-70mm f4 Zeiss for occasional crop use on full frame and against possibility of a superb new APS-C body. Maybe these new lenses with a FX30 body might make a great video combo, albeit compromised for stills given no shutter. As a long term stills photographer I'm trying to gain cinematographer credentials, so my a7iv was a natural compromise, but I do miss my a9 for sports. Maybe I have to splurge on an a1, but really want the 2D flippy screen on the new a7rv. I like compact so could eventually see me adding a really great APS-C too, not to replace full frame but to augment, when wanting smaller lighter less hefty optics. Probably off topic for APS-C, but I have a love/hate relationship with my GM zoom 16-35mm f2.8 as a for instance and was anyway thinking of switching that out for a PZ 16-35 given I also use G/GM primes in 14, 20, 24 and 35mm all full frame. Smaller lighter is IMO the way to go so kudos to Sony for matching or bettering Canon and Nikon in compact ff glass and nimble bodies. I used to swear by my old Nikons F4 and F5 back in the day, but tech moves onwards and upwards so I went Sony 4 years ago and didn't look back. New mkii glass for GMs 24-70 and 70-200mm proved to be the best and lightest in class demonstrating how Sony is just killing it nowadays. Same with ff primes which I love. Can't wait to see what Sony can engineer to make the world's best APS-C eco system. Heck it's probably the best now anyway, but still has so much more potential.

Wow your list of the wishes for the coming apsc body made me so excited Mark! Telling me it's finally coming soon! They were all nice but honestly we do need even more as the competition is leveling up with the newly released Canon apsc cameras. Over 20fps should be a must and also dual card slot on addition to a significantly better ibis. And why don't we have a real contender like Fuji HS2 and HS2s? Apsc is the way to go for sports and wildlife. Sony should not resist anymore. We do need a bunch of longer focal and tele primes and tele zoom too. The 3 years gap between the new apsc lens release was too underwhelming, wish they were releasing 1 every year at least.... Hopefully we get the new apsc bodies this year with a couple of GM level apsc lenses. Apsc needs a pro level body!
@AlphaCreativeSkills
@AlphaCreativeSkills 2 жыл бұрын
I have my fingers crossed that one day I can retire my FE 200-600 G lens. I would like to see another tel zoom the same weight as the 70-350 but with an f/4 aperture. If they could only do a 70-200 with an optional 1.4 Teleconverter I would think it would be a valuable addition to the APS-C lens lineup. I would also like to see 4 more f/1.4 primes (24, 35, 55 and 85).

Very nice detailed and well presented review. The 11 f1.8 is on my list of primes to get. Sony has done really really well in recent years, especially for enthusiasts who still want to experiment with high quality gear despite non-pro budget. I’ve made the jump into the system recently specifically for the amazing 70-350. What a lens! I’m looking forward to the next apsc body though. I love my cute yet very well specd zv-e10. I will need an evf and similar ergonomics to the full frame bodies (especially a front dial). And coming from Canon, it’s a bit weird not to have a proper touchscreen.

Im going to chose between the 15mm f1.4 and the Sigma 10-18mm f2.8 it is a hard choice, do i really need the extra f1.4 ummm? lol I want the lightest lens possible but with a good or decent aperture for travel, landscape and street photography with occasional portrait and im only bringing 1 lens with me im not sure what is the best. It is hard to take portrait with wide angle lens but i have no choice if i only want to bring 1 lens with me.

Thank you for the very thorough video with a lot of valuable insights. To me the one area where full frame shines is wide angle lens. In general they tend to have less distortion and vignetting. While this isn’t an issue for portraits and vlogging (the stuff most KZfaq creators are interested in and vocal about), it is quite a big problem for architecture, interior and real estate photography. Correcting distortion and vignetting always result in noisier, softer corners with stretched pixels. Sadly, a lot of the newer ff mirrorless lens are under designed in that way and rely on in body corrections. Canon is a great example of that. When looking at distortion charts, my old 17-40 (often regarded as the worst L lens) is miles ahead in these areas, even if it is not as sharp in general. I would love to switch to apc-s for this type of work, as I don’t do it that often, but the quality just isn’t there and is getting worse.
@AlphaCreativeSkills
@AlphaCreativeSkills 11 ай бұрын
I trust you check out the ultra high-definition examples that I shared on my Flickr pro account to accompany this review, and clicked to zoom in. I find the corner sharpness more than acceptable given the size, weight and cost savings of carrying these tiny lenses.

Great overview. With Sony's full frame interests mainly being in the f1.4 primes rather than the f1.8/f2 primes, I think there's definitely room to introduce some more premium f1.4 aps-c primes. Photos look about the same as full frame f2 and clearly there's a size savings as well in the aps-c lenses. Always impressive how small Sony can make their lenses.
@AlphaCreativeSkills
@AlphaCreativeSkills 2 жыл бұрын
One of the ways Sony is able to make impressively small lenses is to rely on the camera's lens corrections or a lens profile to remove any distortion. I have noticed on the forums that some purists want this to be removed in the lens design. I personally want to own a lens that weighs 50% less if I can't tell if it was the lens design or the post-production editing that removed the distortion. Corner sharpness does not appear to impacted when it is removed in post so my vote is for the tiny lenses.

So here is a question, as a Sony A7IV user and looking to add an FX30, what's the decision making process between this 10-20 and the FE PZ 16-35? Both F4 and essentially the same focal range on an A7IV?

What would you recommend for an ultra wide mainly for landscape stills? I am considering: sony 10-20, tamron 11-20 and the sony 11. I think that I normally will stop down to f/8 to f/11, however it does indeed seem nice to have the ability to open wide for the low light shots. Also while I focus on stills, I think it would be fun to experiment more with video in the future. I have the Sigma 16 1.4, so not considering the sony 15.

I don't think the stabilisation will ever work as well with the micro four thirds sensors (the ones found in Olympus bodies) but I can reliably hand-hold 1/4 second on these ultra wide-angle lenses. I suspect that a bigger SteadyShot cradle would mean a bigger body. I am OK with Sony's APS-C body being smaller that the Micro Four Thirds bodies so will vote for no change.

Also, seeing the priorities in these lens designs - allowing some distortion to make them even smaller/lighter while still retaining very high IQ in all remaining areas - makes me think Sony finally gets the point of APS-C. @@AlphaCreativeSkills I bought the ZV-E10 and one of the features I would actually like on it would be IBIS since it is supposed to be a vlogging cam. Without IBIS you have to either use a gimbal or rely on OSS or active stabilization/catalyst bowse (which both crop). Walk and talk vlogging would require IBIS in my opinion. I don't think the next entry level APSC would need IBIS, but if they make another ZV-E10 style entry level (vlogging cam), specifically for that line, I think IBIS and some more weather sealing would be a must, at least for me. If they add that (and a slightly larger grip, maybe detachable accessory) they could easily raise the price to 999 and still be fine.

Yes I agree - although an improved Finder would not change the quality of the files being captured it would be good if they could raise the resolution up to some of the Full frame cameras. I personally only use the Finder to frame my image so am not overly concerned about the resolution on a compact camera. If Sony, however, were to only see the APS-C sector as primarily for vloggers, we could see them remove the Finder completely, as we have seen with the ZV-E10. Tis would certainly not be a good move for those interested in APS_C cameras for stills.

Is the quality of the 10-18 very variable? One american KZfaqr and a great fan of Sony APS-C, with 188k followers call it the worst lens Sony have ever released for E-mouth. Others like it a lot.

Funny how SONY dropped these lenses right on Canon's APSC camera debut with impeccable timing, making Canon's lack of desirable native lenses even worse by comparison. People buy into a camera system, if the lenses they want are available... Canon's wide lens roadmap is dismal. It'll be several camera generations before you have a decent selection of wide and bright lenses. Sounds like a complaint? It is.. I really wanted to buy the R5, until I checked the native lens selection...

We date our cameras and marry our lenses so the lens choice is more important than a specific model of camera.

@@AlphaCreativeSkills indeed. That's why I keep buying Sony, although some native wide lenses for SONY APSC were also quite overdue...? SONY's marketing isn't known to leave product release timing up to chance.

That's more like a normal lens on an APSC camera. The Sony/Zeiss 24mm f/1.8 is between the 18mm Sony and the F 35.

The E/35 is from 2012 (still later than 2010). The last prime before the new lenses was the E 20mm F2.8 that was announced in January 2013.

You could tell I wasn't sure when I said this in the video but whatever the lens and whatever the exact date it is a very very long time. Too long in my opinion.

@@AlphaCreativeSkills As an APS-C shooter that has no need for and absolutely no intention to go FF, I agree it's been way too long. On the other hand, Sony has been doing exactly what they said they would do: Finish (-ish) their FE line-up and the go back to give APS-C some love.

Mark - your weight spec on the 20G is wrong. The 20G weighs 373 grams, not 436 grams as you show.

ITS A PITY sony left the APSC action segment entirely to Canon. Action camera needs large lens, and Sony APSC offering simply don't have the ergonomics for large lens. No matter how you swing it, its TOTALLY OFF balance. I can see SONY easily can take on Canon R7 Unfortunately its too late now.

Not sure about 'too late'. Sony could regain dominance in the APS-C sector in just two years if they made the corporate decision to own this segment of the market.
