I believe Sony needs to focus a little bit more to apsc cameras. I enjoy my ff Sony a7iii but i would love to see some elevated version of a6600. Also i totally agree that the needs of 2023 photographer gravitates towards lightweight ff primes than they can be a jack of all trades between ff and apsc bodies. Great video as always!

Two lenses that really should happen: 28mm f1.8 or 1.4. 100/105mm f1.4 or 1.8. The 28mm would be very popular here in the UK for us wedding photographers. Yes we have the F2 28 but it’s pants and not good enough for paid work. The sigma 28 is the old lens design and far to big. I’m quite surprised that Sony has not filled the gap between the 85 GM and the 135 GM for a fast prime. I own the 135 and often need far more room at weddings than I have to really use the 135 GM. A 1.4 or a 1.8 100/105 portrait lens again would make a killing for wedding photographers. Come on Mark - have a work with Sony 👌

It’s very specialized, but I still think there is a place for a high quality shift lens. I used an adapted Canon TS-E 17mm for years as my main architectural lens. Now I use the FE12-24 f2.8 GM ,cropping and stretching it in post, when I need to. I think Sony could make a shift lens, that would optically improved over the aging Canon lenses, much smaller on Sony bodies and use all of the sensor (not relying on cropping or stretching pixels in post).

You only cover short lenses in this video, but I think where Sony needs to do some serious work is in their longer lens lineup. They need to take a page from Nikon's book, and offer lenses such as the 300mm PF, 500mm PF, and 800mm PF, as well as lenses with a built-in teleconverter.

I know Sony is working on a new full frame 300 lens so in this video I wanted to focus my attention on smaller lenses because my own travels of late require really small kit - that’s the reason I mentioned the 70-350 (1/3 of the weight of the 200-600) and wished for an APS-C 55-210 F2.8. As AI noise reduction gets better and Sony has released its first backlit illuminated APS-C sensor, the future for APS-C looks very bright as we shed kilos for the reach we can now achieve while keeping noise low.

I have read several comments on the Tamron lineup of lenses, which I fully agree with. I used to rely on the Sony 24-105 f4 as my go to lens. The Tamron 28-200 gives better aperture at the wider end and acceptable aperture at the long end. It is not stabilized. Image quality is excellent. I matched it up with the new 16-35 f4 for a light weight package for travel. Sony is a major owner of Tamron, making it almost a second brand for Sony. For light weight versatility, it’s Tamron right now.

Hi Mark... I think Sony should make a 50mm 1.8 G lens for enthusiasts. I think Sony should get rid of their 50mm f1.8 old and cheap quality lens form their line up. For me what is missing the most: 1. 16mm f2.5 G Compact, similar to the 28/40/50mm G Compacts makes a lot of sense and fills a void in the current prime line-up. (as mentioned). It would have to compatible with normal lens filter mounts (no cages). Would be the go to vlogging lens for the full frame cameras, especially the ZV series. Designed for frequent 'Dynamic Steady Shot' 2. 105mm f1.8 G, similar in weight, size, and price to the excellent 20mm f1.8 G. At this focal length I think most want a fairly fast lens for good figure ground separation in portraits, however at 105mm f1.8 will mostly be good enough while still reducing the size and weight quite a bit. Would be the go to portrait lens that hits the sweet spot between maintaining outstanding quality / separation / bokeh and reasonable portability. 3. 200mm f2.0 GM - something to go against the Canon EF 200mm f2, would be more of a niche lens, but fill in the gap between the 135mm f1.8GM and 400mm f2.8 GM

Finally, I got my dream lens Tamron 20-40mm 2.8 for the street and a little bit of landscape photography. Changing primes on Sony cameras is a nightmare because of dust. So this lens is 5 prime in one. Light, sharper, and cheaper than the Sony 16-35 F4. I seldom use less than 20mm on the wide end. At low lite for street photography, I use a Samyang 35mm 1.8 which kills the Sony's 35mm 1.8. Lighter, sharper and half-price. (I had that lens) Anyway, the images matter first and the gears a second.

Thank you for your thoughts Mark 🙏🏼 My thoughts: Pls update the 8 year old FE28 F2.0, a wish that comes from several photographers. I use (for astro time lapses and hotel room photography) the 14mm F1.8 GM but sometimes it's surprisingly not wide enough. There are two 12-24 lenses from Sony but a light 12mm F2.8 prime would be excellent. I also like my 40mm F2.5 for city tourist trips, it gives you an unusual perspective a little nearer than a classic 35mm. Maybe some niche small lenses with some unusual focal lengths? And a tilt-shift lens for architecture photography.

Rectilinear lenses require a large dome port for optical correction and need to be stopped down to >f/13 or so to get sharp corners. We need light budget telephoto primes. 400mm f5.6 is nice to have with half the price and weight of the 100-400 GM! 600mm f8 is another option. These will sell like a hot cake! Something like a 350-700mm f5-7.1 for apsc could be a great touch too. Thanks to one of your previous videos I picked up the Sigma 90mm f2.8 -- what a great addition to the nice, but shorter, Sony Compact G's. The Sigma I-series is great!

I am looking for updates on two lenses that will challenge Sony’s engineers, and one policy change that will challenge their marketing department: 1) A very sharp, compact, 70-200 f/4 that I could pair with the 20-70 f/4. I want the sharpness of the GM II with a smaller aperture, reduced size, and reduced weight. Ideally one that would work with, and be very sharp with, the Sony TC. Redesign the TC, if need be. f/5.6 or f/8 with a TC would be fine for landscape. If I need wider, I’ll lug around my 100-400. 2) A sharp 24(28)-200, lightweight, single lens hiking/travel solution. f/4 or wider on the wide end, and f/5.6 at the most, on the long end, but ideally a constant f/4. I would trade the variable aperture for size and weight. Also, paying careful attention to color fringing, especially on the wide end and edge sharpness. I am currently stuck with either the 24-105 or Tamron’s 28-200 as Sony’s 24-240 is inadequate. If 24-200 is too wide a range for engineering to achieve the sharpness and reduced color fringing, a 24-180 would suffice. 3) allow third parties to support teleconverters.

I own the Tamron 35-150, and it is an exceptional lens, I would love Sony to build their own GM version with XD motors and ultimate image quality. I have the excellent 20mm f1.8G, but often leave it behind as it is still on the large size. I would also like a small and light telephoto lens. I used to own the Sigma 50-150mm F2.8 (1st gen) for APS-C A-mount and absolutely loved it. Since moving to Sony E-mount (also APS-C) I've been longing for a new equivalent with all the improvements of lens designs in the last couple of decades. Also, I'm tempted by the new Sigma 23mm F1.4 but hoping Sony will do an equivalent G-lens that would have all the buttons/aperture ring/etc. seen on other new G-lenses as well as possibly being slightly smaller than the Sigma. I'd be willing to pay extra for that.

Personally I'm missing a 105mm f1.4 GM. Currently I'm using the Sigma version of the lens, but it's huge an heavy. A smaller version of this lens would be very welcome for me. f1.8 would be fine too, but it should not be slower than that for me. Also the Sony 24-240mm lens definitively needs an update. In my opinion it's very bad when compared to the Tamron 28-200mm lens. I'm also waiting for a macro GM lens. The Sigma 105mm f2.8 DG DN is in my opinion optically a lot better than the "old" Sony 90mm f2.8 just like the Sigma 85mm f1.4 DG DN is better than the old Sony 85mm 1.4 GM.

One other category is getting kind of long in the tooth: All-in-one zoom. Sony's 24-240 variable is so old and its AF capability is just not up to functioning with latest body AF capabilities. Tamron is killing it with the 28-200, but it choose to compromise narrowing to 28 for compactness. I think that if slightly less compact, an updated 24-200 maybe also f/2.8-4 or even constant f/4 would be a must have lens and well worth the slightly wider and heavier girth than the tamron. I think maybe it would be too good a lens, because it might dissuade (cannibalize) people from buying and carrying around 24-70 + 70-200. A G-series all-in-one zoom?

Otherwise your list is spot on: wider than 24mm compact G-pancake series glass at f/2.8 and longer than 50mm compact G-pancake series glass, in the 70 to 90mm range, that gives the tiny but mighty Sigma's 90/2.8 C and Samyang 70/1.8 a run for its money.

A typically interesting video. For my part, I will never sell either of my SonyZ 55 1.8 or 35Z 2.8. As at least one person has noted,these are not new lens, however particularly the 35 2.8 is compact, light and has just stellar IQ. Almost identical comments apply to the ,still, very underated Sony/Zeiss 55 1.8. Some time ago you reviewed this ,still magic piece of glass, and noted, as a sideline that many owners would never part with their copies. I am one such owner. I am not a pixel peeper, but did note that DXOMARK rated this lens very highly. I have had something of a disagreement with Dustin Abbott, who doesn't really accept views differing from his, his review of this lens was little more than damning it with faint praise. Yes, whichever brand of lens chosen, my preference is ,where possible for Sigma and Tamron, all the IQ I need, for much less than OE prices, it appears there has been a clear move away from 85( whatever speed, though 1.8 is quick enough for me) to see that 135 ff equivalent has almost without major comment, become almost the de facto portrait focal length, in lieu of the traditional 85mm, yes am aware that the large players are making 85 1.4 and 85 1.2- at a quite significant cost unless you are a pro, or mega well heeled amateur. 😅

I am hoping Sony would release a light weight 100-400mm G lens which Ideally, would weigh less than 700gr. Canon already has a light weight 100-400mm RF lens (600gr) even though they don't even emphasize on making their mirrorless system light weight. So I am wondering why Sony is still missing a similar lens in their lens lineup? I used to own the 100-400mm GM lens but it was too heavy to carry around. I switched to the Sigma 100-400mm. While it is lighter than the GM but is still quite heavy.
@AlphaCreativeSkills
@AlphaCreativeSkills 11 ай бұрын
The weight-saving of the RF 100-400 is achieved be reducing the maximum aperture to F8 from F5.6. It is theoretically possible to halve the weight of a lens by reducing maximum aperture by one stop. Woking with an F8 maximum aperture will double the ISO and can also put a strain on the reliability of tracking focus in low ambient light. I would be in favour of Sony extending their range of lighter lenses (such as they did with their 24mm F2.8, 40mm F2.5 and 50mm F2.5). Each new lens they release they seem to be reducing size and weight, so it is only a matter of time before we see their range offering us more choice. The advantage of aligning to the E-Mount instead of an RF mount is that we can also choose Tamron, Samyang and Sigma lenses which Canon have blocked from using their RF mount.
