Edit cuts appear to be made for editing out uhs and umms vs jump cutting me into a vertigo attack amen! Being an Aussie I had easy access to a Rode Podmic, I also own an Audio Technica BP40, the Podmic is good but the BP40 was the clear winner but I compared the two of these before I had access to an EQ (I now own a GoXLR). Great to know that the Podmic can be improved so much I just never thought it would have been possible.

I have a SM7B for streaming but also got 2 podmics for podcasting and they are fantastic. There is a difference in quality for sure but not a $300 difference. Also with some adjustments they are near indistinguishable to anyone who isn't an audiophile. Great mic and with this price point we're only gonna get better mics that try to compete at a similar cost.

I would really like to see an update to this video, especially after you've had a few streams running this with your "Sounds Like SM7B" settings. I've been looking into this mic for a few months and on my studio monitors there are some videos where they sound indistinguishable from each other, and some where they're not even close even on "the same settings" from the reviewers.

Chris Trocano I noticed the same, been listening to Ev Re20 and SM7B comparisons against the PodMic on my balanced studio system (with a sub) and it seems like there’s a lot of variation in quality for the PodMic. Then again, that happens a lot with Rode.

Keep in mind much more aggressive/careful EQing will mask the sm7b differences greatly. I've worked with 7Bs, 57s, etc and after a heavy eq treatment of sub, low mid tailoring and high end freq cuts it's difficult to distinguish. make your large, tight cuts at 500ish and 600, boost your 80-110, pull back on your 200-250 and it all starts running together after the compression is finalized. keep those Qs narrow and these mics come alive.

5:48...was the gain set the at the same level for both mics? cause if so then the Rode mic is considerably more quiet since your gate is obviously struggling to catch the transient of the lower registers in your voice.
@MATTHEWJOHNBELL

The gate on the Podmic was too aggressive compared to the other microphones. Makes the whole test moot. Because all 3 microphones have different output levels, compression and gate should have been turned off to get a true comparison.

Maybe it's just me, but I think you sounded like an angel with that SM7B compared to the other ones. Granted, most of your audience are youngsters on a budget, so I see the point of the video. Any chance you could make a video on what you would do for audio if you were streaming in the same room as another person? There is no "best settings" as everyone's setup and voice is different. Learn what eq and compression is and then find a streamer with a good sounding mic you like and match your eq to sound more like that streamer. Compression is very specific to your setup as well, trial and error till you find a nice sound.

Currently helping a fellow streamer and friend upgrade his audio set-up and one of the options I tried was this one. I just don't like the lack of low-end, and when you add it with EQ it just lacks detail. The Rode Procaster on the other hand is LEAGUES better (more detail across all frequencies) and heavily discounted very often, as well as available on the second hand market. Much better option IMO.

At 12:20ish you lose me. You basically say that a mic looking good on stream is just as important as sound quality. So in this little box embedded in my gameplay, my mic needs to look good. Well, any mic I choose looks better than I do but I have serious doubts that people are looking lovingly or hatefully at the way my mic looks. I chose a Samson Q2U because it 1. Sounds pretty good. 2. Has USB interface to start, and 3. Allows me to upgrade to XLR for better sound, without having to buy a brand new microphone. Put it on an adjustable boom, put it in a shock mount, put the wind screen on it, and it looks perfectly acceptable for the tiny little display I appear in while gaming. But I only have one regular viewer and they don't seem to mind the way my mic looks since they keep coming back, but maybe you are right. Maybe if my mic looked better I've have more viewers...naw.

The Behringer XM8500 seems to be the sleeper pick of all mics. This one defnitely has a fancy look to it, but $77 less money gets you most of the way there as far as sound, and perhaps more if you prefer the warmer sound

Thanks for another great video! I hope you’re fairing we’ll during these mad times. I’ve been doing music and pro audio for 100 years... well maybe 99 years. When it comes to usb mics, I don’t know shit! Thanks again. Best wishes - Tim

You’re doing good work man thanks again on helping with the right purchase, my only question is which alternative should I choose if I can’t get the goxlr? Seen it’s out of stock on Amazon and where I’m from the stores lack the knowledge and bring phony products. I aim for a good one but a cheap one too lol

I had to switch to a dynamic, as I love the Blue spark I have, but I have far to much background noise. I ended up going with the MXL broadcast dynamic and it is a solid mic for 130.00 I get comments everyday about my voice, even though a lot of that is because I have a voice of an angel....lol

Your audio tests were a bit too short to judge by (I think). It might have been that you have more presence at the start of your sentences and that’s why the more expensive one had more presence.

You may need better headphones. Presence doesn't fade out, the same lack of presence is throughout from star to finish. Harris does a great job controlling plosives and natural voice-levels, the lack of presence isn't due to dwindling power or volume in his voice, but a technical bandwidth-response issue native to the mic.

My favorite thing about this review is that Harris is the ONLY person to compare the SM7B and PodMic where he tries to make the PodMic sound like the SM7B. Literally EVERY other review compares them out of the box then says "Clearly the SM7B is better" which isn't true. If you can spend 1/4th the money and make it sound almost identical through EQ... Clearly the PodMic is better. It's just not better out of the box and plugging it in without any processing. But IMO that doesn't justify an extra $300 This is especially true due to the fact that anyone seeking great audio ALWAYS uses some sort of processing. Comparing them without any processing and saying one is better because it sounds better out of the box is just nonsense
