Remember Google's self-learning AI AlphaZero? You know, the machine learning chess beast that made use of its deep neural networks to go on to smash the top chess engine Stockfish 8 in a 100-game match. Well AlphaZero now has a future rival in Leela Chess Zero! Part of what makes Leela Chess Zero very interesting is that you can view the games she has played, contribute to helping her grow stronger, and even play against her at any level up to her strongest level. At the time of this video upload, Leela Chess Zero's approximate chess playing strength is around 2000 (Expert level), and it was obtained after "just" 1.6 million self-play games. What strength might she reach after, let's say, 100 million self-play games? And what can we, in turn, learn from her? The sky may very well be the limit for Leela Chess Zero (LCZero).
Watch my 1st video introducing AlphaZero:

No offense to other chess KZfaqrs trying to make a living, but to be totally honest, I don't understand why someone learning chess on KZfaq wouldn't follow the channels of a GM (Daniel King) or an IM (John Bartholomew or Erik Kislik). You need to have a very high level of understanding to understand and explain most of these games effectively.
@elainetan8742
@elainetan8742 6 жыл бұрын
Yes. Sometimes I watch his stuff, but I watched an agad video yesterday, he used clickbait to get me to watch (Caruana! 2900!) which wasn't accurate, then after 2 minutes I turned it off because he clearly didn't understand what was going on in the game and wasn't saying anything useful. I also found an agad clip where he copied an IM's video exactly. ChessNetwork is certainly better, but I don't really get who would choose a 2200 over a 2400 to learn from. The levels of chess understanding are in different worlds. Again, no offense intended, I just think this is a logical point worth making.

Unfortunately they are up to ID 96 now, but ID 82 is still the strongest. Some of the versions actually decrease in Elo.
@simohayha6031
@simohayha6031 6 жыл бұрын
Réti perhaps because at first Leela evaluates a certain line as being good and then as being bad, Alpha zero liked certain openings in the beginning too then stopped playing them at a later point. Also its very possible alot of pros and engines are currently playing against Leela and even if she decreases in elo temporarily, she does learn from it.
@PaladinswordSaurfang
@PaladinswordSaurfang 6 жыл бұрын
Elo is playing strength. It doesn't make sense for LC0 to decrease in playing strength unless it is learning weaker moves.
@simohayha6031
@simohayha6031 6 жыл бұрын
Réti your comment doesn't make sense. It learns more but it's elo decreases. It's just temporary. Elo is playing strength but also reflects Losses and wins. If you only play against Magnus and lose all the time you're elo might stagnate too but doesn't mean you are becoming weaker. Now that was an extreme example but it's kind of what's going on.

For your information, Leela's self-play Elo can be approximately converted to human Elo by using the following equation (assuming self-play Elo = n): 0.58 * (n - 1000) EDIT: the updated formula is: 0.6 * (n - 550)

Had a game with her that went extremely similar to yours; her playing the same setup and mistakes: c7-c6, later a7-a6, with the idea to make the typical mistake b7-b5-b4?, a6-a5, and black looses in typical fashion on the queen`s side and especially the c-file. Even Rf8-e8 was played, when she realized that things go wrong. ;)

Carl They are probably using a smaller network to speed up training. Once learning rate stagnates they can switch to a bigger network. The training time increases but the skill cap will be a lot higher. That is what they are doing with leelazero the go playing version. Everytime they are near skillcap they switch to a bigger network.

Look, If you know The fórmula to match human strength (0.58(R-1000)), you can speculate How many games lczero Will need to get like 3000 rate. You can apply exponencial regression to find a rate tendency related to lczero played games, then It Will be possible to know, aproximately, How many games to reach 3000 rating or even her maximum rate....sry for my english. Not my First language.

I do not fear the player who has defeated 1000 different opponents, I fear the player who has played against himself 44 million times.

It played against the stockfish engine on my cellphone, but the Leela chess engine (as in the video) was so weak that it lost to Stockfish in 30 moves.

Hey! instead of the queen exchange, you should have to give your rook to the king and take her queen. Am I right? or wrong?

I don't play chess, so I don't know the notation and it's possible I'm missing something obvious.. but at 10:06 he's considering a play which he rejects because the opponent can take his bishop and if he recaptures he loses his rook. At that point couldn't he instead of recapturing use his rook to take the bishop with check, and then when the opponent captures it he has time to take the enemy rook in exchange, leaving him up a pawn?

Leela zero's go AI was quite a thing to watch. I played it three times and got to see it learn. The first time I crushed it with almost no effort. The second time I struggled but beat it, and the third time it beat me. It is now at the level of the absolute top human players, and is still imrpoving. I did not know that the LeelaZero team made a chess AI as well.

It's not the same team, though there is collaboration between the 2 engines of course, as a lot of things are shared. Leela Chess Zero was forked from the Go engine.

One suggestion would have been to take out his strong bishop since you had the queen as backup.

I have a question about Leela: is the insane strength it developed based on it simply being able to recognise nearly ALL possible combinations that can evolve on the chess board? How much of its strength is chess tactics and how much is simply an enormous amount of accumulated data?

6:23 Rc6 and you would get a passed pawn or if the black rook avoided exchange, Rxd6 and you would be a pawn up and the knight would be pinned. IfQa8 you would double up rooks and also Nb6 tempoing queen, and if Nb8, you would exchange, knight takes and Bb6 putting a tempo on the queen

Cuurently there is much more hype for LeelaZero (i.e., the Go engine), it's very strong now, but I guess focus will shift one day.

Do you think guys that in the future AI will reach a certain level where it'll win with white with 100% ratio, regardless it is facing with an opponent of same qualities?
