What could be better than an Alpine A110? The French two-seater, priced at £46,905 and with 249bhp, capable of 0-60mph in 6.2 seconds and with a 155mph top speed, is one of our favourite sports car of the last few years.
But perhaps there is a better way. The A110S has its power raised to 288bhp and its suspension dropped to make it keener and more exciting, at, perhaps, the expense of its comfort.
Step forward, then, the specially modified Life110, which purports to be the middle ground with some suspension tweaks, but very little loss in ride comfort.

As an owner of an A110S I can state also that both cars (A110 and A110S) are absolutly driving fun! Smiling every day on every road! It is so engaging and nothing is really comparable. Whoever wants to buy something like this kind of sportscar. Test drive the Alpine A110 and A110S ... some hours. Then just decide what you felt about driving.

I absolutely adore the A110 and consider it to be one of the best sports cars to come out in a decade. Sadly I have never even seen one in person, let alone drive one. My question is, they are quite a lot of money for the interior you get. Now Im know luxury snob and I understand that's not what this car is about. But.... Do you ever feel like it's to expensive for what you get???

@@raymondnewbill5294 For sure they could have spent more money on the inside, but if you start to understand the concept, that it is much more than the inside that matters then you never ever feel or think about that you payed to much. In fact I have the impression that even if it would cost more I would have to buy it ... kind of addiction. And I never miss anything now when I use the A110S daily. It is so worth driving even through the city (rush hour) in Vienna.

Alpine is very good because very performant with only 252HP on the basic version (292 on the A110S), and with enough equipments to use it everyday like a tourist car. It means a very enjoyable sport car with a very low fuel consumption: less than 7,5 liters for 100 KM in a normal use. In the present environment constraints (global warming), it is perfect. No need to have 500 HP, burn 18 liters/100 KM for performances just a little better. What count is the performances, and the rate Kilogramme/HP which is 4,3 for the A110 (3,8 for the A110S). Me too I like Porsche, Ferrari, corvette...., but the price is usually above 150 000 euros and the fuel consumption is much more. The deal for a manufacture today is to make a performant sport car with the lowest fuel possible consumption (and pollution). And Alpine is doing well.

The factory in Dieppe where it's built will close because they need to cut 2 Billions of costs. It seems that the car will in this case not be continued. - One reason for low sales in the last time was that it can`t be sold in the US.

I have so much respect for the A110. Greatly appreciate they kept it lightweight. I just can't get excited about an automatic transmission sports car. I just be getting old here in my thirties but I'm going after the Lotus or even the Porsche alternative simply for the manual gearbox. Less computers in my sports car the better. Getting an Elise while I still can

I only have the geo setting and I love it. It feels sharper at turn in and more stable at higher speed. Will only add spacers at the rear for the looks in the condition it rides as good as without hem.

The Alpine A110 for its new heritage and admiration has sold around 4000+ in 2019. That is great for a start and more enthusiasts will catch onto this gem. The 718 on the other hand has been a sales flop since it came out in 2015. It suppose to be even more nimble than the 911 but sales figures barely reach half that of the 911 numbers in Europe each year. The Subaru sound of it must be the biggest turnoff in a Porsche. The Alpine is more purebred and fun for sure, hope to see the continued increase in numbers for them.

I wish this car was sold on India! But I doubt how many people would buy it considering it's a really expensive Renault and most people here are brand conscious. Idc though, I love this car! I would have it over a 718 Cayman S any day.

As always a joy, thanks. Having read and watched MP since he started, I know he doesn't make statements like this lightly and his opinion carries weight. I still think that commercially they should have kept the shape, but ditched some bespoke parts to lower the price point (maybe inventory parts wouldn't fit ?), but as it may struggle to survive, residuals should be good if not great for enthusiasts/collectors. From GT86 experience, I think it wise to go step by step with mods so you can evaluate what's helping and what is not.

Just subscribed, because : - I've been droooling over Lotus Exige 2S or eventually Elise 2 SC for over 10 years and seriously thinking about getting a good one now... - Came across an excellent review of the Alfa 4C which got me thinking... hang on, what a stunningly beautiful car, what if... - And now this very fair review of the Alpine I had in my peripheral vision for some months but without managing to fully consider it So THANK YOU very much for messing up my mind on which one to choose ! Being French, and hearing a Brit speak so fairly about this car, I think you've succeeded in changing my mind. Especially mentioning that Option 3 ! So it will be an A110 Pure and come and visit GB for that Option 3 tune. Where can we get that Option 3 setup please ?

Great video and what a lovely car. Minor tweak to your description: 0-100kmh is 4.5s, so I guess 0-60 would be 4.3/4.4s, not 6.2s :) All the best

I run the Eibach Pro kit lowering with spacers lowering 24mm on standard Legend wheels, the spoiler, tune up to 300cv (LifeA110 now runs that power) and just changed geo to sport setting suggested by David Pook, a totally more focused car without compromising the A110 original idea. No need for the S unless you're a track addict.

1,6 cm lower with only 30% stiffer springs probably means you hit the bumpstops quite often. No trick here, the more you lower the more you should stiffen the spring rate…

1. I love that Alpine didn't add any visual cues that one car is better than the other between the A110S and A110. 2. You chaps need an E-M1iii or GH5 for the in-car shots for extra stability.

@@patrickbateman7122 You're right, the hydraulic steering too, absolutely. I was wondering, perhaps, perhaps, in order to get mechanic, analogue cars again we should admit petrol needs to be at its real price. Namely, about four or five times more expensive, a price that includes both the damage it causes and its future scarcity. If petrol price became realistic, it would massively force 99,9% of drivers (who really don't care) to other alternative sources and leave petrol to those who really want it.

@@DarkHumorWritesItself Silence? No, transaxle is definitely not better for the sensorial experience than a mid-engine. Admittedly mid-engine boxer is even better. BTW Porsche fits manuals to their best models, e.g. Cayman GT4. If you can't drive a car, if you can't handle a manual... PRACTICE!

I think too, a manual gearbox would be a nice option! And a more hardcore V6 engined version! In my oppinion, we are having nice Six cylinder sportscars like Supra, Cayman GTS 4.0... a V6 Alpine and a potential new Ferrari Dino would fit perfectly too!😎

My father has just got a Alpine a110 gt and it accidentally came with a carbon fiber roof when there only meant to be with the s model. So apparently hes the only one who's got the standard gt and has a carbon fiber roof 😬

The ride on most modern sports cars is complete ass. Not enough sidewall and spring rates way too stiff in order to have no roll on the porkers. My e61 has one of those non adjustable goldilocks rides. It will roll a bit on corner entry and then it sets

Provided you dont use the factory run on flat bridgestones. When i had them on in my e61 the car rode like a wheelbarrow.

Standard Alpine is good enough ! The life110 has some pathetic prices for stupidly small "Upgrades". They want £950 for a boot lid spoiler?! Stick to stock A110 OR the S.

Sorry but I disagree. That spoiler it's best quality carbon fibre designed to give and extra 50kgs downforce, 365 grams designed and tested as shown on Cup, GT4 and rally versions. I mounted one and also had the Elia version wich is cheaper but way far less quality.

@@zenandpool absolute rubbish, Life110 supplies standard products at an extortionate price, I'd assume you disagree because you purchased one 😂950 for a spoiler when there are french and German performance companies providing the exact same thing for 500 to 600 pounds less... Like with anything, you're paying for a brand name...

@@zenandpool im looking into getting either one of those but I cant quite decide. Obviously the signatech one is the best but its twice as expensive as other options and whats even more important, it doesnt have the papers for legal road use and unfortunately here in austria the police doesnt fool around when it comes to that. Is the elia spoiler just worse compared to the signatech one or is it actually crap and a bad spoiler which messes up the aero and the driving? I know this response is more than a year late but i still would be really happy if i could get some advice and learn from your experience with it

@@deniskurt5578 can’t tell you if Ella was tested and doesn’t work improving aero. Í bought but never installed and didn’t even see it in person, I ‘ve sent it direct to a place where they supposed to cover with carbon fiber. It still at their facilities but I could try to get it home and resell, brand new for 300 plus shipping

Why only 292HP? Some would think if Merc can achieve 421HP with a turbocharged 2.0l 4 banger, Renault should at least get their engine to around 350HP. I mean 1.8l is only 10% less displacement than 2.0l but the power falls short by over 30%. Don't get me wrong, I really like the Alpine A110 and the concept behind it.( a curb weight below 1200KG is just phenomenal) but it lacks power, to conquer competitor cars like the Toyota Supra or the BMW M2.

Because it's not about power, it's about fun. And the gearbox can't stand more. The biggest gearbox of the Megane RS 4 could stand much more, but hasn't been chosen because of the weight. More power, more weight, it's not Alpine spirit, that's more the mercedes/bmw/audi thing.

Because this car is not meant to compete with a Supra or M2, it’s meant to be a pure driver’s car and 300hp is more than enough to achieve the goal, more power doesn’t equal more fun. P.S. the A45 engine is actually a modified Renault unit

Journalist sometimes just try to Push a car to the Audience a Bit too much.. The Cayman, The Alfa 4C The 86 GR are better Sport Cars over the A110.. They are praising the A110 for the same Exact things that they criticizes the other for.. Turbo, Steering, Auto Transmission, etc .. 🇧🇭

HussainOmran but they ride worse. The Alpine is a daily and sportscar in the same suit. The 4c is on or off. The Cayman has no emotion, in the driving, the Gr is way to heavy to drive like the A110. Tried them all and then made my choice. The reactions by strangers on the A110 are unbelievable. Filming, pictures, compliments. And it ride is close to perfection.

MM79 I owned the 981. Fantastic car but Porsche has become mainstream and a completely different build and design philosophy. The only thing I can agree on is the French part hahahaha

I drove all of those cars below you mentioned, i am a former pro-racing driver and a car collector ( nsx, integra, delta evo, r26R, ... ) and if i had the choice i wouldn't hesitate a second and get an A110.

Denstrax its a matter of Preferences.. to my eyes the Alfa 4C is prettier and the Stiffer Suspension With Racing Exhaust sound Amazing.. The Porsche with the new GTS 4.0 engine is a Perfect Daily with amazing Suspension setup, The Alpine is Short on Sound and Short on Looks specially the Front.. its just my point of view :)
