I had built a Clone and Droid army for Star Wars legion and some friends who are not into 40k but are really into Star Wars wanted to play. The ruleset for Legion is rough and extremely overcomplicated for what it needs to be (tons of token, cards, specialized measuring, basically spreadsheet stats). Tutorials online are 45-60 mins for basic gameplay and I forgot half the shit I watched. I turned to OPR since I know 40k, converted the SW Legion units over to the system and even made new units that are not in the official game. When it was game night, within 5 minutes, I explained the rules and we were already playing with little-to-no downtime. Everyone, guys and gals alike had a blast and *loved it*, this is coming from people that have never touched a wargame in their life. TL;DR - OPR saved my Star Wars Legion game night and is a super flexible system for basically anything.
@andrewhopkins5 ай бұрын
Same here. Legion is an okay game, especially when compared to 40k, but has far too many tokens and fussy rules. I created Star Wars army lists using OPRs excellent warband builder and will never go back to either Legion or 40k. Also play OPRs with Star Wars Armada minis. Excellent simple rule set.

My club ditched aos/40k almost a year ago now. I ditched 40k and gave AOS a try with ironhands. OPR is a good replacement that keeps existing armies playable and let's retired armies back onto the table. If we want something more than beer and pretzels we got infinity and if we want something between them MCP or battletech fit the bill.

Correction: While you DO get the full rulebooks by signing up to the OPR Patreon, you can also just _buy_ the full rulebook PDFs. In the event that you don't want to make the financial commitment. (The custom points calculator is still Patreon-only, though). There are plenty of reasons to go with Patreon. You get the full rules, as mentioned, and you also get discounts on the STL files for OPR's range of miniatures. You know, if you know you want to build an entire army or three from their line. It's just not mandatory.

Grimdark Future For The Win. I've been playing for about 8 months now, about 30 games. I have no plans to go back to 40K. GF has 'on table tactics' that 40K cannot hope to match. I've transitioned to the indie system 'F28 - War Always Changes' instead. It support large battles, skirmishes (akin to both Kill Team or Necromunda) and Narrative scenerios (that use a GM!) that's mix wargaming with tabletop rpg. (Same core rules for all 3 sizes but more complicated gear and feats the smaller you go) You can use your 40k armies as they are or do whatever you want. Your Bolt Action platoons could go up against a friends Napoleonic army without changing any rules

What's absolutely amazing too with this system, is that if you find an issue or have a suggestion, you can just hop onto the discord and talk to Gaetano directly, and if he thinks your feedback makes sense, he'll just make the change in the new 2.50 beta, that basically automatically updates all the pdfs and army rules instantly

Started playing OPG Grimdark future as I couldn't keep up with releases of GW rulebooks & erratas. I'm not a fastest painter. By the time I could build a half of my SoB army, a new codex come out. A big advantage to OPR is that, because a game takes very little time to play out, it's much easier to fit a match into the players' schedules. You don't need to carve out four hours of your day, not including packing and travel time, just to play. Between that and not having to commit countless hours keeping up with minute rules changes from month to month, OPR is just not that big a life commitment. People can actually just play now.

The rules are very dense and complicated for W40K, so I never really got into it besides getting some Vehicle Minis from the Death Guard (Because they rule) I painted all of my Plague Marines and spent days thinking about their weapon choices, etc. I only ever got to play some Kill Team with a friend, but even then, you needed some very specific minis. So I kind of Quit GW around last year too and looked around and found FROSTGRAVE, TURNIP28 and even Gaslands. It is so surprising what some easy to learn Rules and a "Just do what you want" kind of attitude to army or model building can do for a Hobbyist. W40K is a game of precise strategy, of wrapping your head around 100 different things to efficiently use the few turns you have. But.. sometimes you just want to grab some treasure, smack a Skeleton with a Spell and be done with it.
@KnarbMakes2 жыл бұрын
Exactly, sometimes you just need to remove some of the barriers to entry and get some games in.
@Bluecho42 жыл бұрын
Turnip28, nice! The kit-basher's dream. On the subject of OPR, I would argue that Grimdark Future et al. are no less strategic than 40K. It's just that none of the strategy takes place on the rules level. The mechanics are so simple, you need to win based on your tactical thinking _on the game board._ The winner isn't who can best keep rules interactions straight in their head. The winner is whoever can make the best decisions about who to activate and how during play. It's much more like Chess in that regard. Chess has rules so simple you can explain them on a 3x5" card. But no one would ever say Chess is a baby game for babies.

He makes a really good point about random fan rules. While I could probably get my group to play something I put together, no one else is going to want to because everyone has their own ideas of what makes 40k better. The same is also true with playing any non-current edition. You certainly can, but most people are going to want to play what's most accessible. Add to that the issues with 40k, meaning that by the time you've "fixed the game," you might as well be playing something different anyways.

3rd was my fist ed as well. the Big Black Book was a fun rule set and it was ALL the rules you had to have. I've never played warhammer but sometime last year I got a bug to paint models like when I was a kid. I bought a GW box to paint and started learning about all the game and lore and game-space. It didn't take long for me to abandon Warhammer and find One Page Rules, 3D printing, and the heart of what this hobby is. The rules make the hobby so appoachable, I was able to get my mom to play One Page Rules Age of Fantasy Skirmish and she had a good time with it. I even got her setup with a small custom team of models that matched her personality in a matter of days. Where else can you find something that flexible and convenient? We played another game on another occasion, by her prompting, this time running some of the alternative rules and it really mixed things up and made it more fun. One Page Rules puts you in the driver seat and lets you make the game into what you want; short or long, complex or simple, esport or RPG, cookie cutter or literally full custom army. I would have never gotten into wargaming without OPR and I'm very thankful to have found it.

One last thing to mention about OPR: for those wanting to run a game closer to the older Warhammer Fantasy Battles (so-called "rank and flank" combat), there's a version of Age of Fantasy that does this, called Age of Fantasy: Regiments. It's built off the same mechanics as regular AoF, but has rules for placing units into formations, facing, pivoting, etc. It's not going to be as crunchy as WHFB - it's still One Page Rules - but it operates more to the playstyle that rank-and-flank games are used to. This also means that people who are more interested in Historical wargaming (Napoleonics, Medieval, Ancient) can use the rules as well, so long as they limit themselves to appropriate armies/units. (The same can be said of "Bleakpowder" style games, like Sludge or Turnip28).

I joined the Patreon a while back and printed out all the stuff for Grimdark Future: Firefight to give my now stalled Necromunda project a purpose ($5 or free vs about $300 in books? Ok). It wasn't quite the old fashioned rules (photocopy of a photocopy of someones self-published free set) we used to play when I was a lad - that was also back when fanzines came as mimeographed sheets stapled together. Playing Grimdark Future with only the basic ruleset is ok if you want a very casual and straightforward type of wargaming, but if you want a more competitive experience, I beg you to get the full rulebook, and play using at least the first 15 pages + the extra actions on page 20. These extra actions add SO MUCH to the way the game plays out, providing you new ways to exploit your units and introducing a whole layer of mind-games in trying to predict your opponent's next actions. They make the game much more tactical and interesting, really turning it into a competitive experience while still keeping the game an easy-to-learn-and-play system.

I played 40k and fantasy back in the 90's, wasn't cheap even then. But I saw the trend going into the 2000's, and just stopped playing. I was also working with my friend at the time who owned a comic book shop, and was looking to expand his CCG tournaments and fit in table top gaming. So I helped him set up stuff, and had first hand experience working with GW America. Let me tell you some crooked ass sales people back then, not to mention the amounts you had to order and the complete trash they pushed. I can remember when Dark Eldar came out, I had ordered a small amount of it. No one wanted it, and no one was going to drop their expensive ass army to make one. I walked into the store one day, and we had cases of Dark Eldar. The sales rep went around me, and lied to the owner about how great the shit was, I don't think we ever sold any. In the end, the owner found a 3rd party source for GW models. He had no minimum order amount, and was getting a cheaper price from the 3rd party then from GW.

@KnarbMakes2 жыл бұрын
Seems to happen on the last turn. Even if one side is totally losing, they scramble to get that one last objective and even it up.

The interview was cool and the minis look great, but when you said you weren’t sponsored and would speak your mind on the game I expected a few more in depth opinions than games good, may be too simple for some folks lol.
@KnarbMakes2 жыл бұрын
Sure. I spoke about some of my opinions in the video. Do you have any questions or need me to elaborate on parts, just ask. Im an open book.

I really have to take a look at Fantasy (hoping that it is more like WHFB and not AoS)

You should try age of fantasy regiment, it’s more like battle than age of fantasy which is more like aos

One Page Rules!!!! YAAASSSS!!! 40K is overrated, overpriced and overplayed. Good on you to leave 40k and play something that is FREE and leagues better!

What is that spray you are using as super glue kicker?
@KnarbMakes2 жыл бұрын
its CA Glue accelerator from CEC Corp (C-Set is the product name I think). Comes in a spray can.

Those models look cool, but I don't have much of an interest myself in getting a 3d printer.
@fitisdead80292 жыл бұрын
I agree that the game needs fixing. It needs a more advanced ruleset allowing for more strategy. For now it just seems as if a good way to show off your models and have them interact

It is a great way to blow some dust off those miniatures, for sure. Haha

F- YEAH OPR!

Why keep giving them money when you can buy 3D printer and get specks from OPR for 10 bucks a month plus the rule books and when you pay monthly you always can print as many as you want

As a noob I think 9th ed 40K SUCKS. It is endless rules and OP of the month model grifting. I hate it. I thought it was going to be chess with guns. OPR is more what I wanted 40k to be and I actually find it fun to play.

Зашёл на сайт: 1) для каждой армии свой лист; 2) террэйн такой же; 3) правила те же; 4) армии те же что и в вархаммер 40000... В чём преимущество этой игры? Или просто без перевода мало что понятно?

Oh, they are a heavily modified version of this STL www.thingiverse.com/thing:2368889 I made the detail lines a bit thicker so they would show up when FDM printed. I'll get around to posting them online somewhere for download...

Heh. Fair enough, sorry for the sensationalism. I dont really see myself playing the 40k ruleset again unless there is some large changes.
