"Does promoting marriage and motherhood inevitably make women easy targets for subordinate status, increased vulnerability, and a return to second-class status? One of the very first columns I wrote at UnHerd, back in 2019, described how, for me, becoming a mum meant giving up on a great deal of the liberal ideology I’d embraced when younger - because it was impossible to square with the embodied reality of caring for a baby. A relatively conventional home life turned out to be much more fulfilling than the radical one I’d adopted with my progressive politics.
My accounts of questioning this individualistic ideology, and embracing marriage and motherhood have resonated with social conservatives. Most of these, it goes without saying, feel (as I do) that family life and women’s distinctive sexed realities should be better understood and valued in the public conversation. Some, though, take more hardline positions: that women should never work, for example, that we should always be submissive - or even that women’s right to vote should be repealed."

As an university-educated woman I find this TRAD BS disgusting. Now she is divorced while I have been married to the same man, after two kids, both of us having had a military career, now we are retired and still together. WE REMAIN IN LOVE. I was NEVER submissive. I RULE MY HOUSE as a WIFE SHOULD. This trad BS, is CONTRARY TO HISTORICAL TRUTH where hubby went off to war and his WIFE help the reins of his estate. Next time, learn before you marry.

Her husband wanted her to work. Last year she was saying her husband left her for being a 'career dead weight'. She wasn't in a 'trad' relationship at all. Yes, in actual 'traditional' families (like the one I grew up in) women were in charge of the house (and usually the family's social life) while the man was the provider.

@@UnclePumblechook Typically, not always, women are much better at perception and social cues so that is why women were in charge of the house and society. The alpha females also always kept an eye on the future. They knew personalities, who was related, who were teh good providers and good matches. Women build societies, men provided for and to safety for them, and women care for the men. But there are always outliers. It's about ability to communicate, to adapt, humility and respect

Take big paychecks off of the likes of the Koch brothers of fossil fuel and right wing fame, in return for spreading a certain kind of nastiness. People who think women should submit to their husbands forget that men were also admonished to care for their wives as they would their own bodies. @@SonicBoomC98 I really wish it were so. Absolute power corrupts absolutely. I’ve been a part of a religious cult when I was young that had expectations of women to submit. I became a teen mom. Very few men are kind, faithful, protective providers. I wanted nothing more than to be free to stay home and focus on raising my child, but I had to leave and work two jobs and put my child into childcare, which I didn’t want to have to do. Because most men abuse the position of dominance and lie, cheat, womanize and beat their wives. I’ve also researched my family history and my great grandmother and grandfather were Orthodox Jews. She never learned to read and he beat her - and that was just the way it was for most women back then. Pop out children till they died in childbirth- and then the men remarried a young woman and she popped out more children and so on and so on. Women were second class citizens with no rights, no opportunity for self determination and nowhere to go when they were abused. And that’s what religious extremists want us to go back to. The only time a traditional dynamic works is if the woman **wants** to do it, not because it is some romanticised ideal, but because it is what she truly wants and is fulfilled by it, and understands that it is challenging and most of the time, a 24/7 chore.... and, more importantly.... it only works if the man is mature enough, has integrity, and doesn't just want a stay-at-home trophy wife, but understands that the role is just as demanding, stressful, and difficult as whatever corporate or blue-collar job he has. It only works if he wants to provide and is willing to sacrifice to do so and understands that he can clock out of work and relax for the rest of the evening. His wife, who has likely started her day before him.... will still be on the clock after he is in bed, especially if young children are present.

It depends on what you mean by "judging" them. If you recognize that it is harmful to them, their children, and many other people in their lives, that's not so much judging as it is an accurate assessment of the situation. If you recognize they have problems with self-respect, boundaries, standing up for themselves, it's not judging, it's a description of what they are doing and why they aren't getting out. I used to think it was always wrong to "judge" until I recognized that judgment also means, by definition, the ability to make considered decisions or come to sensible conclusions.

I am a traditional wife with a traditional husband. When we got married, I wanted to be at home and he wanted to work. However, we live in NYC, one of the most expensive city in the world, so we both had to work to survive. Husband and wife are a unit. You change as your environment changes. You deal with life as life goes on. From a traditional wife, I had to become a working wife and a working mom. From a traditional husband, he had to become a working house husband and a working dad. Life does not have written-in-stone type things. You change as your situation changes. A traditional husband and wife do everything in their power to keep the unit going. The unit needs love, respect, and mutual goals to work toward.

Singapore is the most expensive city in the world, closely followed by Zurich. It's searchable but I know personally that this is the case. Ask me how I know? Us Brits are an awfully well traveled bunch, I've worked in both in investments (high level short and long term), lived in both cities, as well as NYC and Texas for a time, and the cost to live in both Singapore and Zurich will make a New Yorker's eyes water and their wallet melt. I'm originally from Chelsea Kensington, London, where an average apartment goes for £2,000,000 (about $3,200,000 of your US dollars) and it certainly made my eyes water. I was glad to get back to NYC, London, Paris and other places where it's nice, but definitely cheaper.

In my experience on this earth over 64 years, the kind of guy who demands that his wife be subservient to him is typically immature and narcissistic. Kinda reminds me of someone I heard about in the news lately......give me a minute, I'll think of it

My father was very rare, being a man born in 1916 who respected women as people. He believed in talking about problems, and finding a solution that both sides could live with. I never once saw my parents argue. If they had a problem with each other, they would talk about it when they went to bed, and resolve it. What a shock it was, when I realised he was part of a small minority. For me and two of my sisters, that was a very hard lesson. But the other two, found husbands who could be that kind of husband. Men have been the masters for millennia, and you don’t change that conditioning, in either sex, overnight. It’s only a little over 100 years since women got the vote; 40-50 years since we were able to have a bank account, borrow money, own land, or buy a house, without a man to co-sign the documents. Domestic violence, rape and sexual abuse, are still huge problems. In Australia, with a population of 26 million, a woman has been killed by her partner/husband, EVERY FOUR DAYS! Our children need to be taught about human relationships and life skills, from as early as possible. These habits are so entrenched as to be genetic. Today’s adults have come some of the way, but we fall into those gender stereotypes, so easily. As women, we tend to let an issue go, because we can. Suddenly, you’re living a life you never wanted to live. Dad used to say, “It’s easy to talk about the big things. But if you don’t talk about the small things, they become a big thing.”
