"LAS VEGAS (KLAS) - A northwest Las Vegas valley couple claims they were sold an empty dream by two hosts of a popular home-remodeling show.
Paul and Mindy King recently married in 2018 and bought a house to start the next chapter in their lives. But they say the experience has been a nightmare.

I am a house painter, I was called in for an emergency paint job after an HGTV team had come in . They only painted what the camera would see! The front foyer was painted only where your eye went as you walked in , the side where the front door was and closet were not done, anywhere they did not shoot ( under the desk, side of fridge etc) was not painted. The team had 24 hours to complete but they left and called me, the owner was panicked I stayed up all night and finished everything properly. I found out afterwards this is not uncommon with these shows what the camera doesn’t “see” doesn’t count and they often bring in outside workers so they can get some sleep it is all phoney. Sad that the owners actually paid for this!

Electrical contractor here 🙋‍♂️. I can definitely tell you $200k for a remodel of an average home is on the high end, the work should be top tier at that cost. Also, flippers/remodel contractors are notorious for hiring unskilled, unlicensed, and often undocumented workers. The cheapest subcontractors they can find is who they get and you'll see that in the work. If you do contract a company for a remodel, demand that every subcontractor they use is licensed and to provide proof at the time of signing, and that the license holder will oversee their part of the job every day by site visiting every day their portion of the work is being done. This is extremely important because it is pretty common for contractors to send guys out to do work , but they never go onto the job to inspect and problems show up at the very end or when you've moved in and start finding things, then you gotta start tearing walls open again trying to fix stuff.

Used to enjoy the show but, stopped watching it when it became so formulaic. Weeks in they would "discover" problems that any builder worth the name would have picked up on in first inspection, then the budget would have to be reshuffled and instead of choosing cheaper options for certain areas, they'd simply remove certain rooms completely. Yawn.

My parents have been screwed over by just about every single contractor that's ever done any work on their house in the 44 years they've there. And most of the time, those contractors were recommended by their friends. They didn't get screwed over to this extent, thank goodness, but still. They also watch a ton of HGTV. I'm definitely telling them about this. If it gives me even an hour less HGTV time when I visit them, I'm calling it a win.

Renovations done to your home via a reality TV show, what could go wrong? These shows are on a schedule, the work is bound to be shoddy when they have two or three weeks to do all the work, no matter how extensive. Kind of asking for trouble.

For 200K, it better be perfect. Property brothers claim they are experts. They're not. They are 2 talking heads. My husband rebuilt our home, and he's a carpenter/state certifiedbuilding inspector. It's expensive and takes a lot of time. Make sure your contactor is insured, registered with the state, and get a referral from someone that had wirk done that you liked and inspected that work.

Often, you don’t get what you pay for. People buy an image. A photo. Businesses are about making the most profit with the least cost and effort. We have largely opted for a throw away culture where things need to be “updated” to new standards every few years. My grandparents, for example, had their furniture from the time they bought it and I still have the waffle maker they had. Things were meant to be fixed. I think now mostly things are temporary. Just my opinion.

I agree with your sentiment, but not your slogan. Here’s mine. In the US, you don’t always get what you pay for, but you always pay for what you get. It's not the first or second legal complaint I've seen against the Scott Brothers. They never admit any liability and have a ream of legal documents to protect themselves. They are posers who give us contractors a bad name. I've met and worked with quite a few "TV RENO Stars in Toronto and its the same game perpetuated by HGTV and the crappy contractors they use (a majority of the shows use private contractors they hire not the stars you think are doing the work) or the ridiculous timeliness they are forced to work with. There is a couple shows that are produced by the stars/contractors themselves who also own and operate construction/renovation companies who are honest brokers of the trade but you cannot go by that alone if your approached to participate on a reno show. In fact, you have little to no recourse when things go wrong due to the legal jumble word game you'll find yourself in if you do. Your only weapon is the media and it will be a bumby ride to get satisfaction as well as an expensive one because lawyers want there slice off your pain as well. Beware. Cheers 🇨🇦

I live in a subsidized apartment complex and they encourage you to have the maintenance workers fix things for you but I’ve been waiting for a replacement sprayer for my kitchen sink for 2 years. Finally did it myself. I needed a screen for my door, waited a year, did it myself. Windows wouldn’t open THREE YEARS, did it myself.

Yes, I would trust TOH. They take months to do a renovation and every aspect of the house is fully evaluated along the way from beginning to end. These other shows I’ve watched do these huge renovations in a few days or a week. I don’t see how this is possible if they are making sure it’s done right, perfect and made to last. I’ve also seen many horrific color and pattern choices on some of these surprise makeovers, over the top, impractical and unlivable. Some even ignored what the homeowner told them they did not want touched or changed and they did it anyway. Many of these shows have to work with what their show backers want them to promote which often goes against what the homeowner really wanted. I stopped watching most of them because I get disgusted by how outrageous they are, but This Old house has taught me a lot over the last 30 years and I’ve gotten brave enough to tackle some projects with success and realized I would have paid someone a lot of money to do something that looked harder than it actually was. It also showed me when I would be in over my head and what to watch out for and being very specific in my contract when hiring a contractor to do what I needed. Thanks TOH!

It's not just reality shows. This goes on every day because people don't know what is good work and what is bad. The ceramic tile. Are you aware that when tiling a board floor that floor has to be at least 1 1/4" thick and in good shape to keep the tile and grout from cracking due to floor flex? You need to do your homework, have a pro help you to write specifications, and then retain the right to do daily inspections and reject shoddy work. Any descent contractor will also be able to get a performance bond before work is started. If they don't do the work properly and in a timely manner the bond is forfeit and you get all or some of your money back.

Sounds like the renovation was launched around 2018, after the couple got married. My dad and I paid $150,000 to level a home that was badly tilted, replace the concrete supports of the stilts that were holding it up, replace those stilts replace two thirds of the hardwood floors, instill two new bathrooms and the kitchen, replace several windows, rip down two walls, and build new plexiglass railing along the stairs. Plus repainting, coating the roof with a rubberized membrane. That was in 2010. In Hawaii, the most expensive place in the country. Probably cost twice that much now.

the board doesn't care about anything here contractors can have a active license then start work and get payments and leave, the next week you can look up their license and it will state that their license had been revoked a year prior (this has happen to two people I know, one $89k and other $18k) things run different here in Vegas

Why would you pay a TV show to remodel your house? Where is the benefit to you as the HO? The show is using you to make money, they can cough up the cash.

A reality TV show by any other appearance is still a reality TV show. An expose has been produced about the work on Chip and Joanna Gaines' TV show, too. Same scenario as Property Bros: everything done solely for the TV appearance; things not visible done shoddily; as soon as filming wraps, the place begins falling apart. Also, in the Gaines instance, it's alleged a large proportion of the houses become short-term, vacation rentals rather than the residences for the respective families featured in the TV episodes (as the show makes it appear).

Home repair, appliances, plumbing, electrical stuff is SO expensive, I was committed to learning it myself as a woman when hubby had no interest! The work is so easy & you buy the part in certain online & parts stores, & the company itself has videos to show you how to put it in & You Tube has everything you can think of! Try it. Nothing is more rewarding & you saved yourself a small fortune too! Last job quote I got was to fix my dishwasher. I ordered the part for $17.40. Repair guy wanted $150 + tax & part was $49.00. So $199. Vs $17.40? It's a no brainer!

That's cool. With me and my girlfriend is a bit different. I don't have an eye for design. But she and her daughter do. So they will come up with a plan or design, and I'will do the rest. That system works perfectly.

Pretty sure they’re are local bylaws or ordinances around DIY home improvements so make sure you read up on it first 😉 Doing your plumbing yourself can result in tens of thousands of dollars in water damage if you do it wrong. As an example unrelated to DIY my parents had a water line burst that fed the water tank to the toilet in the master bedroom. The toilet had been there for 15years. As a result there was $30,000 in water damage because no one was home for 8hrs (they were at work)

Rookie mistake. I'm actually surprised they don't have real experts behind the scenes for quality. This is exactly why in many states you can be sued for just waking up and calling yourself an Interior Designer. Real Interior Designers hate these shows as well as some of the phony DIY influencers! Entertaining, but it's all a production! That includes the people who wake up one day and say "im an interior designer" after decorating a single room in thier house 🙄 These people aren't degreed or licensed and they lack the experience to deliver a safe, well constructed project within budget for a real client. Leave all construction up to the experts! There's absolutely nothing wrong with just being a decorator and avoiding liability.
