Very fair review. You captured my thoughts on the game perfectly. My biggest gripe is the tracking of various cards which isnt a big problem solo but when playing with multiple people I feel like I am either tracking everyone elses cards for them or biting my tongue just letting them miss and forget about effects they have available to them.

Hey Tom, after a LOOOONG time, I'm finally getting back to this game after it arrived and hit my table several times. Really appreciated all your comments and found them very well balanced re: Pro and Con points and agree wholeheartedly with everything said. The rule book was by far the biggest let down but, once "overcome" there is a great game to be had. I've played solo many times now, lots of "admin" re: card upkeep but would envision taking on this "role" in a multi-player game (let others focus on their character(s). Thank you for your time reviewing - I felt it deserved more attention than it ended up getting in the community... Hoping BL Games manage to turn around their current situation re: shipping and get to come back stronger than ever, maybe with an app to assist re: admin (which works great for Nemesis from Awaken Realms!)

Thanks to Tom for the detailed game review! It not only shows the board game accessories in detail but also mentions a lot of game skills. Low-luck game mechanics do improve fairness. Eastar as a board game manufacturer is pleased to complete such a large number of board game accessories. Please contact us if you also want us to help you realize your board game design dream.

I love this game so much! It's the only game I'm playing since I got it 2 months ago. I just can't think of playing anything else (also afraid I'll forget some rules *cough* *cough*). I love it so much that I pledged a good chunck of Street Masters from Indiegogo, I pre-ordered Contra and Buddy Cop and I'm waiting for Hour of Need to show up on their website to get it as well (missed the KS).

It's s nice development of the street master's game engine. I prefer Alterquest as the quests bring a more satisfying goal to the game. It's lovely playing the different characters and pulling off the cool moves. Only played 2p so far. Couple of finer points of the rules could have been better communicated but Dr bandage on bgg will set you right.

Most of the feature cards don't need checking unless a hero is adjacent, so more out but as the game progresses but you soon realise which to check. As for threats they are constant(ish) throughout.

I'm looking for something to play solo that is similar in complexity and setup/playtime/breakdown as Tales from the Red Dragon Inn. Is this the one that is going to deliver that same experience? If not, what do you recommend?

Tom, I think you should make a video about top 10 fun games with short setup time (5 minutes or less). The setup time for this game terrifies me, and as a lazy person I would not want to set it up no matter how fun it is.

As long as you dont have AP about choosing your hero/monster combos, you can get it set up in about 15 minutes. The longest portion (I always find) is the ammount of decks you have to shuffle. Some people take longer because they pull out and pre-ring all the minions, but I find doing it on the fly dosnt take too much extra time.

The Sadlers have great ideas, but often at the expense of elegance. If you don’t mind keeping track of lots of things, this is a good, if somewhat repetitive experience; the variation from the Modular Deck System does make up for this though. I would definitely ignore the campaign mode; I know Kickstarter loves campaigns, but if you are just slapping a campaign on without it being integral to the game design, just leave it to one offs, Kickstarter be damned.

Neat but passed after seeing users report 3-4 hour sessions average... Not cool when they listed 30-90 minutes. Glad it's good but we just don't have that much time for something like this, and if I wanted solo, I'd still likely go for something quicker and/or cheaper.

Maybe generic heroes, but frogmen and pigs have to be more unique than orcs and skellies! That said, both are high fantasy, so going to have some tropes. ... and at least Altar Quest is fun to play :) (I say that as an original S&S backer)

What are you both talking about!? Even Tom said it's different from other dungeon crawlers! Too random? In what way? Yeah, there are dice, but you always get something from your rolls and that's not the only way of mitigating luck. Too generic? Haven't seen a game where you battle these kinds of enemies! Forgettable? Nah, it's going to be here for a long time and bet there'll be a second Kickstarter campaign in the future 😉. Too fiddly? Yeah, that one's correct. Not going to deny it at all XD.
